Final tip: after completing the 30 min fix ( which looks decent in all seriousness), move the hanging picture 12 inches to the left😅.

One additional note on the screws: You want them just below the surface, but NOT breaking the paper on the drywall. Good job! I struggle with the finishing and especially trying to match texture.

As someone who does this for a living, he does know what he’s talking about and it’s not a bad method. For any first-timers that don’t have to hurry, start with pre-mixed mud ($5.98 at Lowe’s and it comes with a plastic spatula), get used to doing it, then move to hot mud.

The stainless 6” and 4” knives that have a continuous transition to the handle are so good. Never rust, super smooth surface that’s easy to clean. Can’t recommend them enough. But then again, I finished 8 rooms from raw drywall, so having really good knives was worth it.

How do people not understand it's possible to both demonstrate a cheap, quick fix while also recommending better tools? Anyway, really informative video. Chances are I'll be fixing a whole in the wall at some point because that's just how life works lol

Is there a reason you didn't use screws to hold the patch in place? Just thinking that if you mount something somewhat heavy there, there isn't much holding the patch to the wall.

For a diy'er who has not done this job before, I think the pre-mixed joint compound would be a better choice.
@LRN2DIY28 күн бұрын
If speed is not important, I agree. My goal here was to show that this can be done in a short time, start to finish, so hot mud is required for that timeframe.
@JL-kc2ny28 күн бұрын
Hot mud also shrinks less, especially if patch area is large.
@Airoden27 күн бұрын
there is nothing wrong with recommending a 20 min mud. especially for job that small. even someone who has never done it before should have a pretty high success rate. and literally the worst case scenario is they cut it out and get it done on their second try.
@sociopathmercenary27 күн бұрын
The nice thing about hot mud is that you just mix what you need and put the rest in a sealed bucket or ziplock. Protect it from moisture and it never goes bad

I know this is a quick and easy demo, but if is wall is perfectly smooth, it's essentially impossible for that not to be hilariously obvious. That said, the one thing that really can be hard to wrap your head around is how easy it is to thin the mud down and run it over the bumps and valleys of the first coat. Unless it''s super chattery, the ridges and such act as rails for the knife to glide over, and it can get super smooth.

Yea, textures come in three different varieties. Cheap looking, cheaper looking and really cheap looking. Texture is just to hide poor initial construction and save labor over a good finish. Sorry.

What about the metal self-stick repair squares? They’ve got those for the size you’re working on here. I used that for some damage and it came out perfectly. Better than I expected, actually. With that said, I love your idea of,peeling surrounding plaster off existing drywall, though - that’s brilliant.

If you score the paper on the wall to take the top layer off about 1 inch around the hole... it would lay flat.
@iblackfeathers28 күн бұрын
why do the demo with the plastic spatula if you recommend the metal one?
@LRN2DIY28 күн бұрын
My goal was to show that you can even use the $26 setup to get good results. Paying a bit more means even better results, but it's doable with the plastic knives and pan.

Ok drop the screw guys!!!!! Take those two paint sticks and cut into four inch strips. Then use loctite power grab to glue the four sticks on the ONSIDE of the hole. One at a time , hole for 30seconds each. Let them alone for ten minutes. Then take your patch add more loctite to the exposed stir strips and slowly push the drywall patch into your hole, hold for 30sec. Even better is that 2x4 could have loctite and is even stronger. Now plaster like he said but I use a premixed tub.

You're right that it's not perfect but I asked several family members to go in and look for the repair job and they couldn't find it for a long time. Eventually they did but weren't even sure if what they were looking at was the right spot, so it blends in really well with the texture of our walls.
