I like how the point of "Ripped Pants" episode from season 1 is teaching us that repeating the same thing for the sake of being funny over and over makes it unfunny and annoying yet it seems like that's what modern Spongebob is. Also to talk about Patrick, one thing that made him a great character in season 1 and 2 was how it almost looked like he was putting a persona of him being stupid just to look like an asshole. About Kamp Koral? Fans went into outrage when Sandy appeared in the show that it "breaks the timeline". In response to that one episode, Kamp Koral takes place in the alternate universe. It's funny that this isn't the first time that Spongebob "broke the timeline" considering there's an episode where Spongebob built a Stonehenge to distract the jellyfish and got stuck at the post-apocalyptic world. Y'know, as a lifelong Looney Tunes enjoyer, I've noticed more & more that people consider the animation in those cartoons to be more rubbery/buckwild than they really are. Like the comment above said, only Bob Clampett's LT shorts are like that, & even those have some structure with how the characters move & are built, a method to the madness. Otherwise, the shorts by other directors (while still expressive & slapstick-heavy) were a fair bit more grounded.

Glad to see LS Mark hitting the nail on the head of why I didn't like Kamp Koral. The reason why "Kid Spinoffs" are usually made it's because executives sometimes feel like the original characters are too old for the demographic that they want to appeal to, and so think that making the characters younger will make them more relatable while also giving them more "freedom" to do activities adults no longer do but kids do. But Spongebob as a character was created in a very smart way that made that issue a non-problem, because his child-like innocence made up for his neublous adult age, allowing him to adapt to any kind of scenario with easy. If a episode calls for Spongebob to act like a kid, he can do that because of his overall childish attitude; If the episode calls for something more related to adult things like getting your drivers license or working at a job? Spongebob would still adapt to that environment while still being appealing to all-ages. "Spongebob goes to a Summer Camp" could have easily happened in the regular shows regardless of his age because that's how easy Spongebob as an archetype can adapt to a story. Ironically, I'd say Kamp Koral actually LIMITS what Spongebob can do, because by locking him at a certain age, they basically restrict things that kid Spongebob can do that adult Spongebob could always do, despite the fact adult Spongebob could do anything kid spongebob could do as well. If I had been put to make Kamp Koral, I'd probably have made it about Spongebob being a camp counselor and the shenanigans that'd ensue by having someone like him run a camp. His childish mind would still allow him to do kids stuff but also the new role and setting could have opened the doors for new characters (whatever they'd have been better written or not) and unique situations that the regular show wouldn't be able to fully do. and even THEN, this idea I had, while better, could have easily been done as a regular episode anyways...

At this point, it's clear they're just trying to make Spongebob their Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny kinda mascot. Mickey Mouse is a blank slate. He's black and white, and doesn't live anywhere, he doesn't have a certain set of rules or continuity whereas Spongebob does. You can't turn Spongebob into a mascot, but that's exactly what Nickelodeon or Paramount or whatever's trying to do now that Stephen Hillengburg's dead, which is just depressing.
@goingunder25482 жыл бұрын
Also doesn't help that Spongebob is the one show really keeping Nickelodeon's head above the water these days, hence why it's on so much. I believe Disney was the same with Mickey and his friends in the 30s before Snow White came out in '37. He was pretty much their only profit.

The original was okay as it is, but since Nickelodeon saw this as an opportunity, they just lap up all the content and make it a spin off, something the creator NEVER wanted. I agree, however the youngest member of Gen Z was born in 2012 and is 10 years old now, so I doubt even the youngest member of Gen Z is going to grow up with a show meant for little kids. However, the next generation of kids born after the early 2010’s, which is supposedly called “Generation Alpha”, are the ones who may grow up with this show. They’ll also grow up with even worse/uncreative kid’s content on KZbin, which makes me sad because the kid shows I watched growing up (Thomas The Tank Engine, The Wiggles, The Teletubbies, Blue’s Clues, Elmo’s World, The Ruff Ruffman show, etc., plus Yo Gabba Gabba because my younger brother watched it) were full of creativity, charm, and experimentation. You don’t really see that as often anymore I feel like, since the most popular stuff for parents to show kids is things like Kid’s KZbin (blegh and ew), and shows like Paw Patrol (which I feel is less creative and charming than kids shows I watched). I’m not trying to be an old man shaking my fist at the youngins, but it just makes me sad that a lot of kids won’t grow up with the same awesome kids shows that I did, or shows like them.

That's kinda how I feel about modern SpongeBob in general. Mid season spongebob (Seasons 6-8) is mean spiritedly bad but the modern seasons (S9-12) are so fucking boring in general. To me at least, it just seems like the staff just doesn't care anymore about telling a coherent story with great character moments. I feel like all it's focused on now is just trying to get a cheap laugh of the audience (mainly from fetuses and embryos). It's just stupidity for the sake of stupidity. With Modern Simpsons, as awful as it is now. At least I can sense effort most of the time and some of the worst episodes of the show (Alone Again Natura-Diddly and Bart vs. Itchy & Scratchy) could work if written properly and executed with care. With SpongeBob, it's just not the case. SpongeBob used to be a more laid back, wholesome show but now it just seems to appeal to the ADHD viewers out there. To be fair, SpongeBob was never a deep show to begin with. However, thanks to the clever writing and phenomenal character moments. You were able to have relate to them and sympathize with them and have these episodes resolve themselves in a very satisfying way. Whether that would be SpongeBob (Pizza Delivery, Christmas Who, Patty Hype), Patrick (Big Pink Loser) and Squidward (Band Geeks). You're not going to get that very much in Seasons 4 onwards.

I think the issue with the new animation is it just feels very fast and stretchy. The animation is stellar, but comparing it old to new, characters constantly bounce and stretch as they move, so when there’s more slapstick elements it doesn’t feel that’s abnormal. Just seems like them reacting like how they would normally.

I recall Vincent Waller stating the redesign was done because the original designs were too boring or something along that line. They rarely appeared, but a drastic revise to parents of a main character is odd to me, especially since they were used in an episode released close to The Patrick Star Show's release (Patrick's Tantrum was released on the season 12 DVD over a year before airing on television). I would've preferred an attire change (like the one Pat was given) and a slight personality change over completely changing the characters, also like the idea of Pat's parents being smarter than him over them being the same intelligence as him.

Yes. Have some fun with the material and characters without trying too hard to be its own thing. The original show would have "off model" episodes like krusty krab training video" and patchy-centred episodes with bizarre live-action scenes, that worked very well. They could have done well with a few miniseries' building on other aspects of the show, or showing alternative universes. Such as Patrick having a talk show or the characters being at summer camp. Maybe not the best idea, but the spinnoffs being more limited and taken less seriously might have worked better without the emphasis on them being their own thing.

The biggest issue I have with the spin offs (other than them being utterly repulsive in every way imaginable), is the lack of continuity from the original series, especially with character relationships. Kamp Koral acts like Spongebob has ALWAYS known all of the people he regularly interacts with, when that’s not the case. In the original series Mr. Krabs meets Spongebob when he comes to the Krusty Krab and asks for a job, Squidward knows Spongebob because he’s Squid’s annoying neighbor, Sandy knows Spongebob because Spongebob met her when she was being attacked by the giant clam, The Flying Dutchman meets Spongebob after he drops an anchor through his house and Spongebob climbs up the rope from the anchor, Spongebob meets/finds out about Plankton when Mr. Krabs tells him about Plankton, etc. Spongebob is one of those shows that, while each episode has its own individual story, the whole world has a lore behind it that overlaps. It’s not a show like Family Guy that shirks on lore continuity for the sake of jokes, that’s been one of Family Guy’s things from the beginning, but Spongebob has always held a lore continuity. Kamp Koral throws every bit of that continuity out the window, and even The Patrick Star Show does with Patrick’s family.

Actually, Nick could've done this stuff whether Hillenberg was dead or alive. Even if he didn't want these spin-offs (we just don't know and won't), he didn't own SpongeBob. He just created it and was a staff member. Nick owns SpongeBob, and has since 1999.

17:13 Finally someone directly points out how Patrick used to be in the older seasons of SpongeBob and how SpongeBob actually looked up to Patrick for advice. The comedy was that we knew Patrick was dumb and his idea was ridiculous, but SpongeBob didn’t and trusted his ideas. The only character who would ever call out Patrick was Squidward, which made their interaction unique. Nowadays, everyone calls Patrick dumb and their entire relationship with Squidward is just they annoy him

Speaking of Patrick's flanderization, I'm surprised no one brought up the fact that, in the later seasons, the writers basically turned him into an animal. There's an episode in Season 13 (Pat the Dog) where he's written like a dog (or worm in this universe) and SpongeBob and Squidward have to train him.

I think the magic of Spongebob was that it didn't need spin-offs. It was great on it's own. Spongebob is still considered a pop culture icon and one of the most iconic characters of all time. Once you milk it, his value as as an icon is disrespected in my opinion.

It's interesting you mention both Sonic Boom and the CGI Alvin And The Chipmunks shows since they're all animated by Technicolor, who all worked on Kamp Koral. They also worked on various Disney Junior shows (mainly the Disney Junior Mickey Mouse shows and the shows produced by Wild Canary like Miles From Tomorrowland and Mira Royal Detective).

SpongeBob was my childhood, and I’ll forever love and appreciate it. But out of all the Nicktoons, why was SpongeBob the one to last this long? It hurts to see other Nick toons that I also loved when I was younger getting like 4 seasons and seeing SpongeBob with over 10 seasons, three movies, and 2 spin off series. It hurts to see a series being so disrespected and drug out for no reason

SpongeBob is somehow the best, and worst thing to ever happen to Nickelodeon, due to the sponge all these other great shows get tossed to the side and if they didn’t get immediate results and high ratings, they got tossed over to the “nicktoons” channel to die. SpongeBob really killed the potential for so many other great shows

Even when Kamp Koral has in the intro "Created by STEPHEN HILLENBURG", it makes me think that Nickelodeon wanted us to believe that it was his idea to make the spinoff just to forget what he said about spinoffs or it's true which I see very much impossible

Interesting thing about the point from 20:54. Kamp Koral is getting two new writers, one having previously written for Season 4 of the original show and the other having worked on Phineas and Ferb. As for The Patrick Star Show, that has a new showrunner at the helm who has experience on Looney Tunes related shows and is bringing on new people as full on storyboard directors. I’m kinda glad for these crew changes, since it’s obvious Season 13 of the original show has been affected by the production of the spin-offs, both airing-wise and writing-wise.
@genmeriphoton76552 жыл бұрын
As much as I don't want these spinoffs in the first place... I do hope these new crews would be able to capture the essences Mr. Hillenburg had put onto his shows.

TBH by now I think the real reason they started milking the show as excessively as they did after Stephen's death was because Nick finally realized they can't, for the life of them, keep any new cartoon they make going more than two years (which is almost always their own damn fault). I don't see the shows themselves as really too worthy of scorn, but I do think franchise fatigue is inevitably going to bite them in the ass if they keep being this excessive about it.

11:56 It’s probably because the shading seems to be direct illumination, which is generally efficient with its light calculations. It’s not very demanding, but it can look like shit if not used right. I think something that can help is using global illumination instead, if you use it correctly, it can make your 3D scenes look a hell of a lot better than this!
