This is one of those movies you can watch one of two ways: One of the ways is that you can watch it with a group of friends and drink beer and laugh at how nuts the guy is. The 2nd way is to watch the doc as a psychological study of a man who wanted to do good but got lost along the way because of personal demons. BUT... This fuckin fox scene (and the best scene where the mother fox comes back to greet grizzly man the following year and allows grizzly man to meet and pet her newborn- and no, I am not shutting you, that really happened.) It's in these scenes that show me that this man did indeed have a very strong connection to nature and animals and it wasnt just dumb luck that he survived for so many years (13). And it was more than just knowledge. He had some kind of magnetic gift that gave him a greater connection to nature than the rest of us.

Some moments in the film touched me like nothing I've seen before. I agree very much with Werner when he says that TT captured moments through coincidence and spontaneity that a studio and professional film-makers could never catch. My favourite part is when he's filming a bear, saying goodbye for the season, and it looks like the scene is over, when from nowhere his two fox friends appear, running toward him.

@Rain Salgado I believe that even though he died in one of the most cruelest ways imaginable, he in general was happy with his life. I just listened to the audio recordings of him getting mauled, but even so. He had many enjoyable years with them and it's quite a way to go out for him I guess. The two bears that got shot due to him getting eaten though was something he likely would've liked less I imagine. It's a clear warning as well, these remain wild animals and even though him being with them was most of the time great for him, it took a mad man to stick around bears that he didn't knew that were hungry and he paid for it with his and his wife's lives.

He was the cause of 6 bears deaths. This is the number of bears killed as they looked for the one who ate Tim and Amy. If Tim really loved these animals he would have stayed out of their way. This is the only true way to love and respect wild animals. Habituating them to humans is the same as signing a death warrant. I love animals. I can't get enough of wild animals but I would never be so ignorant to think that I should interfere in their life. Tim must have been mentally ill to think the way he did and to do the things he did to those poor bears. People if you love wild life love it enough to leave it alone!

He lived and died on his terms. He was not deluded. He was well aware that he could be killed at any moment, but he was willing to take the risk. He found his passion in life and lived it to the full. Not all of us are fortunate enough to live our passion, or even to find it. It’s important to note that he wasn’t killed by any of the bears he spent 13 summers with. He was killed by an old, rogue bear. Amy could have gone back home by herself, but chose to go back in the bush with Tim. Neither of them could have dreamed that they were going to die in the few days they stayed extra. He managed to live 13 summers among hundreds of wild grizzly bears. I’d say that’s quite an accomplishment and he must have done something right.

I caught that part--Herzog is clearly entranced by the whole Timothy Savior thing. It creeps me out how TT often referred to his own danger, often predicting his 'end', and how he wanted to be a meal for a bear. He had delusions of his own diety, seeing himself as super-human, something of an oracle to the bears, creating suspense and a fatalistic 'fate', which heightened his own marketability back home. He was a world-class manipulator--I wonder if he thought a bear could really kill him.

No, he was a boy with severe mental problems who hid in Alaska every year. He was warned multiple times and told to stay out by the Park Service. He had no skill or training and cost the life of himself and his girlfriend from his stupidity (she was afraid of bears and didn't want to go). He was a simpleton who courted disaster by approaching large bears and say things like " I love you Mr. Bear, I love you" That isn't normal behavior. Professional nature photographers and trained professionals use telephoto lens and stay a safe distance. If you play russian roulette with a pistol everyday, and than you eventually blow your head off, that isn't an accident. A seriously misguided life, that was caught on video tape. Which cost the life of two people. That's all.

...And one more thing, we all belong to the food chain, we should go back to old ways, Where is our instinct? Dead, asleep? Is reason handy? Don't you have a wild friend out there? I bet you do, I just don't get your anger towards Tim.

Well, while I personally don't hate him, I think I can understand why people react to him with anger: It's frustrating to see someone give up his life and convince someone else to behave in such a way as to also place the same death-defying risk to her life as well, eventually culminating in their horrific, tragic and senseless deaths, and for all of his posturing and years of work, all he really accomplished was to prove that wild animals will eat you. It makes him seem dumb, looney.

I do understand his love of animals I feel the same, but I do understand the fact that wild animals are wild animals.

Anyone watching this guy thinking he was doing a good job or special just wants to romanticise his insanity. He didn't have bear spray, or electric fence to protect his tent, the fact that he even survived 13 seasons is pure luck. Even when he says to the fox "I love you", it shows a naivety, animals don't love in the same way humans do, especially not wild animals. These bears didn't have the same relationship or bond he thought he had with them. He had no experience, wasn't trained and I find it hard that anyone even refers to him as an environmentalist. He knew what he was doing was dangerous and even stated he would like to die by a bear, it's almost like he was waiting for it to happen, and it did, unfortunately his wife died along with him. He had no proper long term relationship with any of the bears, simply naming them doesn't mean anything. His wife said she was scared of the bears and she wanted to be as far away from them as she could, he wasn't necessarily doing anything, any research, comparison to his knowledge, he was just trying to show that he was brave. this whole thing is just sad.

Wow, I must have missed that incident--poachers throwing rocks? Never heard of such a thing--poachers are there to kill the bear with lagre-bore rifles, shotguns. I wonder what the deal was?

I don't dislike the man, I just feel he didn't have the respect for wild animals that he should have done. People who worked with bears longer than him told him he was taking a huge risk, and putting not only himself, but the bears in danger and he did it anyway. Im not happy he is dead, but he kinda asked for it.

He *liked* having the flesh flayed from his body as he frittered away his last moments of terrified, panicked consciousness screaming in futile agony while being torn limb from limb by a ravenous wild animal? Hmm, well, different strokes I guess.

He disrespected the grizzly bears by going too deeply into their world/territory. He forgot that they're WILD animals not friends, not companions, but wild animals. It's just sad that he and his girlfriend were killed because of it.

Love fr animas is what John Rendall and his friend Ace Bourke did for that lion. They rescued him and understood the right place for him to be was in the wild. That's where the lion would be happy. I bet it was really hard for them to let him go. The animal they took care, and raised as a child and then let him go to a place where they wouldn't be able to see him and interact with him anymore. That's LOVE!

In this video he was cursing at the animal. At first I thought that part was a parady but it was actually him! He is suppose to love those animals but he was cursing at one of them about a stupid hat! That is just strange. I'm a psychiatric nurse so I know strange people when I see them. God rest his soul.
