A Montana author wrote a book about Timothy Treadwell--a man so crazy about Alaska grizzly bears that he lived among them for 13 summers. It was a fatal obsession that led to his death. Mark Holyoak reports. (originally aired November 2005) (video courtesy Timothy Treadwell, NBC, ABC, World Wide Pants & Warner Brothers)

This is what an Alaskan biologist had to say about Tim Treadwell back in 2009: "As a biologist currently involved with a study of the damage that Timothy Treadwell did to the Brown Bear population that he interacted with I have to agree with the general sentiment on this page that Treadwell was anything but a friend and guardian to these bear. Since his 2003 death, 7 of 12 bear that he interacted with, who were being monitored by a legitimate scientific study, have died. 2 winter starved the winter of 2004, having become so dependent on Treadwell for help gathering the required sustenance they needed they went into hibernation ill prepared and died in their dens. 3, including the bear the Treadwell referred to as "Mr. Chocolate" had to be put down by park rangers, a danger to themselves and visitors thanks to Treadwell removing their natural fear of man. 2 were killed by hunters having wandered outside of the sanctuary, in both cases the hunters reported that the bear walked right up to them. That is over half of monitored bear known to have interacted with Treadwell dead. What is the legacy of "his" bear that weren't being monitored? Treadwell, and other ecoterrorists like him, are ill informed individuals who make stupid choices, and individuals who make stupid choices are dangerous, to themselves and others."

MAD Magazine’s Sergio Aragones once drew a strip where a man was introduced to bears as a baby in his crib, with bear toys, a teddy bear, bear t-shirt, etc. As an adult he wrote about bears. A friend suggested they go hiking one day. They do, and of course he spots a bear and runs to it with his arms open for a big, loving bear hug. Last panel shows his gravestone, where someone left a teddy bear.

That was always his big thing. Poachers. I also remember very few people challenging that, at the time. But, if you really dig into it--do research and look at the statistics, the poachers were few. If really any. Truthfully, he did what he did for himself. Yes. He did love those bears. But he did what he did for himself, first and foremost. Treadwell believed he was the god of the grizzlies. He HAD to discipline them when he thought they were out of line. Think about that statement, he of all the people on earth determine what a bear instinctively does as good or bad. My heart breaks for Amy’s loss and how terribly frightening to see someone being torn apart by a huge bear knowing she was next. She was used by TT as a jacket or a girlfriend of a gay man. He can point out that in having a girlfriend he certainly cannot be gay. Rock Hudson had girlfriends he even married a studio secretary to quash rumors of his homosexuality, Liberace also had girlfriends, he was engaged now and then but never married. TT was a slight man with strong effeminate characteristics, I’m sure growing up wasn’t much fun. Did he pick bears as his compensation so he could take on a he-man role? He bragged I can do this, BUT if anyone else tries it, he would be killed, DEAD. Two lives were lost, bears died and were killed because of Treadwell’s intervention, what possible good came out of his time in the wild?

His actual problem was that he was NOT a gay man but a man with the appearance and manner linked to gay men. Being heterosexual but effeminate is hardly unknown. It also can cause special problems for a man because he is attracted to women but when people look at him, too many assume he is gay. Thus, he is attractive to men but attracted to women and this can cause all manner of difficulties.

I read The Grizzly Maze. It was well written, insightful, told Treadwell’s story so the reader caught glimpses of how Treadwell was more invested in marketing an image of himself as a nonconformist bear whisperer rather than learn anything about an animal he didn’t do a damn thing to protect. He treated the bears like very large dogs, miss understood humans as if they could be molded by him into an animal that desired his company. He could easily have been one of those awful neighbors in a reality show. The bears tried to ignore him, only to find him squatting on one of their pathways, hanging out with their young like some creepy man who thinks the kids think he is cool. I’m surprised one of the bears didn’t kill him long before that autumn morning. What really bothers me, besides how bears were killed because of his self-centered, idiotic, intentionally ignorant choice of lifestyle, or how his behavior caused changes in that population of bears that will be passed down for generations to come. I am bothered these interviewers cared more about presenting an entertaining little lie rather than ask Treadwell a tough question or two. They didn't have on any of the naturalists, wildlife biologists, apologists, any scientists who were familiar with bears of that region and would give an educated opinion of the negative impact Treadwell’s behavior had on the bears in and around the area Treadwell used to stage his own, personal circus.

Being eaten by bears is a gruesome death! Lions kill their prey by suffocating them. Wolves cut the jugular & let their prey bleed out before eating. Bears just dig right in & eat you alive! The only good thing I can say about his situation is, he at least got to die doing what he loved the most & was killed by the bears who he loved the most. Also he was likely bi-polar. He had good intentions but very very misguided and wouldn’t listen to anyone who tried to warn him or advise him. Wouldn’t even carry bear spray or stop camping right in the bear paths. He made up his own rules. Unfortunately he is a cautionary tale of what NOT to do with bears. Treadwell had a history of alcohol abuse; he became obsessed with bears to the extent that he no longer respected their innate behavior; he tried to pet them, even the cubs. He pitched his tent right on their trail, he lost whatever sense he had in his relationship with them. October is the time when Grizzlies are eating as much as possible in order to gain fat for hibernation. Going after a dead salmon floating in the river supports that, perhaps the bear was not getting enough to eat, also supported by the fact the bear ate both victims or at least partly ate them. Humans can NEVER anthromorphize wild animals; because they can revert back to basic innate instincts at ANY TIME, which has often let to the demise of humans! RESPECT ALL WILDLIFE, they WILL at any time, defend themselves and what they protect -- food, young, territory etc. People who try to become "friends" with wildlife never learn that, and will probably die in time, as did this couple. Sad, but totally unnecessary deaths.

You are correct. Every animal needs fluids to live, especially in hot climates. Water is natural and preferred, but lions who eat zebras in the desert areas, get enough liquid to prevent dehydration for a time. But a water-hole is a usual site for a predator to prey on an animal. They LEARN AND REMEMBER that the waterhole is a good place to hunt and they return to it for that reason as well as drinking the water.

The problem with this book for me is that the author diagnoses Treadwell by describing his perception of a personality disorder to “medical friends” and having his opinion validated. It’s a complicated story. If anyone is interested..read a book called “The Grizzly Maze” by an Alaskan author named Nick Jans. It’s the only book that I’ve found that tells both sides in a totally non biased way. It admits the faults of the man but it recognizes his accomplishments as well.

I really wonder what was going through his mind when he was being killed because he didn't die quickly. Did he regret every decision he made that led to that moment? I believe his intentions were good. Gotta keep in mind, he was an amateur, and to most of us, a person a little different from the rest of us, but it's never a reason to slur someone, especially after they're dead and can't defend themselves. He genuinely wanted to help the bears. He simply lacked the schooling that would've given him better judgment and a better insight as to how to do it. And the Grizzly population DOES need help. It's strange that we have so many black bears, and fewer and fewer grizzly bears. He just wanted to share his appreciation of the animals so that maybe other people would find a passion in them. His 'flaws' only made him human. Nothing more, nothing less.

And his statement about the Yellowstone park grizzly hunt has come to fruition. Trump has decided to kill off the wolves and bears in the parks.

There is also a scene where a person who is speaking out against Timothy admits that poaching is not a big problem at the national park but there are some who go to the park to hunt and poach. He also states that they could wipe out 6% of the bear population and there would still be a healthy amount left. He said this of course speaking out against Tim, but he clearly admits that there is hunting at the park and some poachers.

Overall it’s a sad story he definitely was struggling with his own demons… he even lied to a lot of people as well from the deep dive I did. But you can’t say all he did was bad I genuinely feel like he was lost and hurting in need of some help but he did start a foundation and love teaching kids about bears you can tell he had a good heart and a good soul that meant well just that he had a lot of wounds that weren’t ever healed and he ended up getting killed.. I don’t even think he was necessarily all that stubborn but I think being too comfortable with any wild animal was what lead to his death (especially a predatory animal) anywho just like the guy said in the beginning Timothy had this light about him that made you want to like him even tho he may have seemed off and weird lol you just could tell at the end of the day he had a good heart and was someone that was troubled and lost

I will give this guy credit for the few times he actually did get to touch/pet a wild freaking grizzly. Not many people do that and I bet that fed his ego even more to pull it off. But the end-lesson in all of this.. is that wild bears are not pets.. they are not huggable... and they don't give a damn about activists. :D

He just loved animals of the wild as do I. He just should have left earlier than he did. The bears try to get as much food as they can before they hibernate, and Timothy and Amy would do just as good. I appreciate the video he left behind of the bears. I learned a lot about these bears in the wild.

I was being flown out of Katmai the very last day he was there, alive..the pilot, I knew from being a repeat visitor to Katmai told me there was a "dead pool" kind of lottery going on up there, basically telling me it was just a matter of time...we did not know at the time that his number was up.. I learned through my brother in law read the paper and thought it was me the next day..felt so bad for the woman who trusted him and the 2 bears that were killed because of his poor decisions...So sad all the way around...

I camped out in that area three consecutive Summers in the 80s and that guy was doing the opposite of what your instructed to do by the park rangers when you get off the plane and then he gets eaten go figure. I'm only shocked that it took so long. There's no way he drove a motorcycle to Katmai lol the only way in is by float plane I love how they get the facts screwed up

A 357 Magnum won't do shit to the bear their skull is strong enough to withstand those bullets, you would probably need a 12 gauge shotgun and you're forgetting an electric fence
