One thing I didn't like about this episode is how they painted all of the crew members reactions to Barclay's enhanced intelligence. They all seemed afraid or jealous or judgmental of him. here's a guy who's gotten shat on most of his life, he finally becomes the person he wants to be, and everyone he knows feels threatened and upset by him. He just saved their lives!
@metsrus6 жыл бұрын
common human response, fear of the unknown. These people were in control of the ship and when Barclay usurped control, there was no reason for them to trust him or the entity that possessed him.
@undrhil5 жыл бұрын
It's a nice thought, but if you were placed in that situation, I'm willing to bet you would feel the same trepidation as they do. "Here's a guy who's gotten shat on most of his life" ... in *most* situations in which a bullied person suddenly obtains power, they go power hungry. This guy is someone most of the crew picked on and he is suddenly in control of the entire starship. Let that sink in.
@jsallerson5 жыл бұрын
While your concerns are well placed, the core logical reason for concern and thus their reaction, is the understanding that with enhanced intellectual capabilities such as demonstrated here with Barclay, what often tends to happens is the view from the mind of the enhanced begins to start assessing the “greater good” picture. What starts out as someone doing something to save their own friends, turns into a being who sees the bigger universal picture and recognizes that in certain instances, those same friends are causing harm to the greater picture. This means inevitably, that the crew of the enterprise, humanity itself, perhaps every living creature in the universe would be destroyed for the purpose of whatever greater good Barclay would conjure up as being more important. It’s a pretty common theme in the Ai circles, and is relatively no different here.

What's hilarious is that there's a Stargate SG1 episode which claims that the exact opposite of this is true. In S4E20: _Entity,_ there is an entity which is essentially a computer programme from an advanced alien planet that body snatches a member of SG1. When told to return to the supercomputer they've built, they claim that, using the neural interfaces of the brain they now inhabit, they've grown too large for the confines of the computer.
@flachs66 жыл бұрын
i know this is an old comment, but the difference is that no computer of the timeperiod of stargate could be called fast even by todays standards, and our computers still can't even simulate a fully functioning human brain, heck even the asgard computers might be fast, but not as fast as a brain, in a later episode you can see that the human brain is even capable of keeping up with the Replicators, while in startrek computers are stupid fast, probably faster then the human brain.
@tomf31504 жыл бұрын
It was S. Carter. Then the entity argues that it can't tust humans enough to risk more radio communacations to its home planet. Then O'Neill answers thtat if Sam's consciousness isn't back in her head he'll make sure to blast that planet with every radiowaves he can for the years to come.
@busTedOaS3 жыл бұрын
An interesting note here is that today's computers are faster than a brain, firing in nanoseconds rather than milliseconds, but not as powerful in terms of intelligence. It's not entirely clear wether it's hardware or software that AGI is lacking.
@paulmichaelfreedman83342 жыл бұрын
@@busTedOaS Probably both. The consensus is that ~100 exaflops could be capable of emulating a full human neo cortex. Currently, the fastest low-latency computers are approaching 1 exaflops, or may have just surpassed it. I say low latency, because distributed computing networks (high latency) can have average calculation speeds of many zetaflops. But that is useless for emulating a brain.
@busTedOaS2 жыл бұрын
@@paulmichaelfreedman8334 could you expand on why a distributed network with a zetaflop wouldn't fit the bill? My uninformed thinking is that our brain seems quite compartementalized as well with all the different lobes. maybe cross-communication between those would be okay to run at a slower speed? our behavior seems largely based on local reflexes and heuristics - but maybe those are not intelligent in the sense we are after?

Honestly, this should have been Barclay's fate for most of if not the rest of the series. Sure Barret was iconic as the computer's voice but she would still be there in other shows and other ships. Barclay could have been the comupter for a time, maybe even ironically use the transporter to construct a clone of himself to be free of the computer if this version of him was to eventually die, sort of a Barclay 2.0 who has some of the character's elements but is entirely his own person, giving Shultz the opportunity to play the character differently.
