Michael Dorn said when he was auditioning for the part of Worf, he acted and carried himself as how he imagined the character would be. He sat alone, ignored the other actors, spoke in a low slow tone while keeping constant eye contact. He acted like a Klingon, and he got the part. Dorn is as instrumental to giving us an understanding of Klingons as Nimoy was in all things Vulcan...

@Gerald Burke Disagreed. Michael Dorn was a Klingon like Heath Ledger was the Joker. Not even Leonard Nemoy reach that point of method acting.

I agree, and he not only set the standard for Klingons, he did it while being an atypical Klingon surrounded by humans. That makes it both easier and harder (similar to Spock / Nimoy) in that both the "standard" Klingon characteristics must be seen, but also showing the uniqueness of Worf and his upbringing. Good writing and acting have to blend as well. Nog's journey as a character required the same blend of writing and acting, and is another excellent example.

Worf backhands the brat, thereby challenging him to a duel to the death. He then defeats him while being unarmed. Then he takes his weapon, indicating that he isn't worthy of having it, and is weak for losing it. And finally he leaves him alive rather than letting him die with honor. In klingon that is quite the burn.

I think my favorite line in this clip is: "And what of his Father?" Worf: "that remains to be seen." It shows he's smart enough to realize that two people, no matter how close you or they think they are or should be, can make different decisions or have different opinions without it necessarily reflecting on one of them.

It's more pertinent in Klingon culture where the Sins of the Father are literally transferred to the son. Fortunately such dishonors do not automatically transfer back up the family tree.

When my son was about 8 (he’s 35 nor) I took him to a Startrek convention in Sacramento. Michael Dorn was there but he was late. A big guy walked on stage in a flight suit, he was Michael Dorn, but I didn’t recognize him without his makeup. He introduced himself and apologized for being late. He said he flew his Spanish trainer jet up from LA himself and there was an unavoidable delay. His normal voice is not his Klingon deep voice, but he can go in and out of it at will. He said Jonathan Frakes was the practical joker on the set and Patrick Stewart was the most reserved at first but he gradually came around. He seemed like a nice guy. My son got an autograph from him.

Now Jonathon Frakes I meet at SD comic con 2010. He was not pleasant at all. Screaming at the fans, (laterally yelling at the top of his voice, startlingly people around him), real turn off in my book. They always say first impressions. Maybe a bad day or something, but it is what I remember about Frakes. Michael was just too funny and really likable!

YEAH. Michael Dorn single handedly made the Klingons much more interesting than they were in the past, considering Worf was originally supposed to last only the first season. people just liked him too much to take him off!
Just_Jay1281 3 ай бұрын
@Levi Skardsen at the time he was a secondary character, hard to say if Crosby hadn't left (due to not liking her character development, or lack there of) if he would have gotten to be as well developed a Character. Not to mention TNG as a whole first season was lack lustre when it came to writing, they were still trying to find their footing.

@GplusGains granted, I didn't think much of it either back then. I was serving in my last year of my 4 year term in the Navy, just a few short years before the economic collapse of the USSR and the end of the Cold War. Worf was only supposed to last to the end of the first season and then be out. but, he ended up being very popular and he was kept on, and I think Michael Dorn made the Klingons a lot more fun

Darts isn't a game, it's a sport. And I just remembered WHY he doesn't play games - growing up on Earth, during his first game of junior high-school, his Klingon blood became enflamed with exuberance and in throwing his first tackle, basically almost killed someone, knocked this kid two years older and way bigger than he was into a coma for about 3 weeks, which completely horrified him to the extent that he vowed to never take part in human sports again.
MrKunt 3 ай бұрын
@TookyG Oxford Dictionary defines sport as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or a team competes against another or others for entertainment", so why exactly is darts not a sport?
Kakuretaka 5 ай бұрын
@Derrick Threex I think the story went. He and another kid went to head a ball at the same time. Worf hit the ball and it flew in to the net. He turned to gloat so see the other kid on the ground dead. The kid had head butt Worf but due to his Klingon skull he never felt a thing but the boys neck had snapped. I think that or head trauma

The thing I like about worf which is a testament of his actor Michael dorn is that he plays like a Klingon who is an outsider in both lands. Worf was raised by humans the majority of his life but identified as a Klingon. So he ended up being a strict adherent to Klingon tradition. But most Klingons (like martok and gowron) don’t have a stick up their ass about Klingon tradition. It’s really good writing

There's an excellent book "Star Trek Excelsior: Forged in Fire" It goes into detail how it came that Curzon Dax got the respect of Klingons. For any Klingon to say "Curzon's name is an honored on among my people" speaks volumes. That book also explains more about the changes in Klingons, It also explains how Sulu became captain of Excelsior. easily one of my favorite Star Trek books.

@tenhirankei ....to follow up on that thought of why Curzon was respected in the Empire. Kor is a Klingon who appears on the station later. The same actor who played him in The Original Series, "Erand of Mercy," reprises his role in two episodes of DS9. "Blood Oath, "The Sword of Kahless." The story even ties directly to the episode of TNG, "Sins of the Father" and much of the Klingon lore afterward, and their first film, "Generations" by including the Son of Duras in "The Sword of Kahless." They show Kor as an old man who has lost his way, tying right to this very scene of Klingon honor, especially the ending, which I will not spoil. "Generations" prominently featured the Duras Sisters, whose fate was sadly shown by showing us what happened to Chang in similar circumstances in Star Trek VI, to save money.

I once saw a sound bite from an interview where Michael Dorn said that his approach to playing Worf was that he tried to add something new in how he portrayed the character every year. It was a brilliant approach because no matter what the script did with the character, Dorn ensured that Worf was always changing, always evolving just as any normal person does during the course of their lives.

Also it was a stroke of brilliance to bring Worf into DS9 at this point in his characters development. He, poetically, needed the breathing room of DS9 to further develop as a person, and his unique history was perfectly suited to be at the center of Klingon/Federation conflict over the Cardassian/Dominion situation. And, as the Klingon Empire demonstrated, a Klingon is ideally suited for handling Cardassians.

Plus Michael Dorn just has that impossibly deep voice that just makes him so cool. I like that Worf is just a cool low key Klingon, and nothing rattles him. And he's never been a troublemaker. But he sure knows how to handle them. He's not a hot tempered rage fueled Klingon. He's just very cool. And even without the whole Klingon getting all wound up thing? Worf is just a badass. I love how blunt and to-the-point Klingons are. Worf confirms Drex's identity first and provides his second before beating the shit out of him; Martok enters Worf's quarters and immediately makes his intent to take the dagger back clear; Worf states the reason he took the dagger AND makes plain what he thinks of Martok's son TO HIS FACE. As an autistic, I appreciate that aspect of their culture very much, and would like to think I'd get along with their non-warriors at least (doesn't hurt that I have a naturally loud voice).

I'm so happy in DS9 they showed Worf actually kicking ass given in TNG he was always used as a "LOOK THE BAD GUY IS SO STRONG THEY BEAT WORF!" but... everyone beat Worf. Worf sucked. I don't even need to bring up the barrels, lol.

''WORF ... the perfect Klingon'' - delivered by his wife in jest, yet so very accurate. Worf is what the Empire could be, if they developed manners and were careful to measure their aggression. I see him as ultimately honorable. It is a pity that we don't have people like the Klingons, like Worf, Son of Mogh, among us today, because we could all learn from that. Success!

don't need a video to know how awesome worf was. if you've seen next generation, you'll know he was both thoughtful and dangerous, smart but wild, honor bound and loyal to the cause. you won't find a better ally to have your back when it hits the fan.

You need to watch Garak he worked hard on his character to the point he wrote his ow huge back story bible like thing he used to play him and the writers looked at to do his lines. They even gave him permission to build the character adding his own style to him. This was amazing as even if an actor wanted to change a single word it would take hours as they had to ask some one who bounced the request all the way up the chain and had to wait for it to come back down. He was also allowed to use his bible and when they went to Cons and Expo's he would rather than tell things from the show over and over make up stories from his past, They even let him write books that have been published it is letters from Garak On Cardasia after the war to Julian talking about his past growing up and what life is like on/in the new Cardasia, The actor that played him was the crazy Killer in one of the Dirty Harry Movies and he says that role almost ruined his acting as every role he was offered was a nut job .... He moved to the stage and was invited back to TV and fell in love with Garak and demanded to be allowed to work with the character and unlike most of the actors he was given permission to. He made Garak who he was not the script writers or Rodenbury. look up en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Stitch_in_Time_(Robinson_novel)

Worf could have been awesome but there is a noticeable difference between him and all the other Star fleet officers. In his days, his adding knowledge to his job didn’t happen. He wasn’t taught enough by the writers to appear successfully as a tactical officer in TNG. Almost everything he says is rejected by the captain or the first officer. Other characters were made to appear better educated about the workings of the ship when something went wrong. Geordie,Data, the captain, Riker, but Worf is always shown as the strong arm from security. When Data is left in charge, Worf shows him disrespect. I think the writers did him a tremendous disservice in character development. When he was brought on to the DS9 series, there were different writers, and I’m sure they could see how he had to develop new skills or be unable to be as flexible as the rest of the characters. In his later life, all the stories say he will be an ambassador and not remain with Star fleet. Also very important, where are more Klingons to come to the academy after the treaty with Star fleet went into effect? Years are shown passing, but no one seems to think that cultural exchange is important in peace time. Again it has to the writers. If they don’t understand Star Trek, they can’t write well for the characters.

Worf is far from awesome. I take it you didn't watch TNG. Almost every single idea Worf has had especially in the team conference room was always shot down by Picard with a fat NO or what are our other options. As far as DS9 goes he was the cheapest cast member from TNG to bring in that they could do something with that might of mattered. End of day nope. Dominion war was more important. Worf's promotion in the movie was more of a pitty promotion cause they really didn't know what to do with him. Worf was always a third wheel outshined by the rest of the cast members. I like Michael Dorn and the charactor of Worf is cool but frankly Worf was simply filler.

Granted Dorn did a good job interpreting how a ex pat klingon would behave raised by Earthlings. I'm not sure why Worf thought Klingons act like samurais when klingons act more like vikings or mongol hoards. However Worf was a moron compared to rest of the crew. Worf could never solve a case on his own. He was often beaten up by lesser beings. How many times have the shuttle craft been stolen on his watch. Once by a kid. Worf was formally reprimanded by two of his captains....and yet somehow reboot will finally have Worf commanding the Enterprise. In the real military getting a letter of reprimand by two captains is a career killer.

@Fleecemaster There's no other character who would make as many sacrifices as he did just to be in Starfleet. I loved how you could always see his many different motivations, and how you could basically see his wheels turning in his head, and yet, he still managed to pick the right side.

I think for me it shows how much Worf has gained, he's listened to Picard and taken so much on, you can see that in his character development. He's much more vigilant, also he thinks before acting, looks at things from all sides, is much more measured and learns from his mistakes. He's taken the best from humanity and also his own Klingon heritage. All the restoration of his honour during TNG as well. I'm not sure there is a character with a better arc in all of Star Trek to be honest, if not perhaps anything!
