Great review! Everyone has a personal preference when it comes to anti-corrosion protection, but what I've found is the easiest, cheapest, and most durable protection is simple beeswax. Take a small chunk, rub vigorously over the knife, gently heat the blade over a campfire or hair dryer just enough to melt the wax and buff it out. Just as you'd do to wax your car. it seeps into all the micro-crevices and water just beads off of it.

Many thanks for watching the video and for the kind words Andrew. Great tip about using bees wax. I have often used a beeswax candle and smeared/rubbed it on the steel, never warmed it or buffed it out. I will have to give that a try sometime. Thanks for the tip. Have a great weekend, all the best Mark.

Let me know how it works for you! For those worried about warming up heat treated blades like this, you can also give it a liberal smear of room temp beeswax and set the knife on a piece of paper on your car's dashboard on a warm day. That should be enough to melt the wax. Thanks again and a great weekend to you too!

I sure will. I'm going back out in a day or two so I will try it then. I don't mind warming it up next to the fire, I'm sure the wax would of melted before anything happend to the steel. I've got some nice bees wax from a local honey farmer in Wales where I work, I'll try that. Thanks for sharing Andrew. All the best.

Hi Shane, I hope you are keeping well mate 👍. I'm sure you will be very happy with the knife, they are great knife. I'm all good thanks mate. I have had to take my car off the road for a while to have some work done. But since all the virus lockdowns I haven't had the money to get it done. As soon as I get back to work and get the car back on the road, then I will get out filming. Thanks as always Shane, have a great week mate, all the best, Mark 👍😀🔪🔪.

Hi Jerry, I hope you have been keeping well :) I should be out tomorrow all being well :) I am spending most of my time dodging rain at the moment lol. I agree Tormek is a great for honing and cleaning steel. If you ever struggle to get it, AutoSol from most car spare shops is another good option. It is usually cheaper than Tormek and the tubes are larger. I think I got a tube from Halfords last time. Have a great weekend Jerry :) All the very best, Mark :)

Say Heah M8, There's no question in my mind that if I didn't buy my Vintage Blind Horse Bushcrafter when the Kephart phase was happening, I would of bought the L T Wright Genisis. As it was I had the handle made flat and I had it polished, it now looks like a High End Kephart. It's Beautiful, and I call it my Lil'tank. I also like these kind of knives pointer. So when the GNS came out, I got the 3V version with the Coyote Black Mountain Handle. I love it, It's my task specific carver's. I like taking it out with my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet, or my 2Hawks Warbeast Tomahawk, plus one of my Folding Saw's. A Lite Carry Trio. I always wanted a Woodlore, so when Battle Horse came out with the Attitude, I bought it and had B H modify it to look like a Woodlore on steroids. I love how B H made it too. B H and LT use to be Blind Horse. Do I know both could make great knives. Infact I wouldn't trade my Modde Attitude for a R M Woodlore. Infact I like my Bushcraft Knives a little longer anyhow. I posted mine on Google Plus, Your welcome to look and tell me what you think, Ok, Dilly, Dilly.,,.p

WD-40 is a rust remover, not a lubricant. Ballistol is a general use lubricant and not a rust remover. Most people, use WD-40, as a general use lubricant, but that's when they should have used Ballistol instead.

Greetings from BC Canada from a fellow Brit! A pal of mine over here (from Bingley) has one of these knives and he likes the 'broomstick handle' and 'scalloped' scales. I make a few knives, some I have shown in my vids. I have a A.Wright Bearclaw Bushcraft Knife (Made in Sheffield, England) which I have yet to review. I have the AKC Forest Knife in A2 Micarta Scales, I like the steel. That said most of my knives are D2, a couple of O1 and 80CRV2 (favoured by Finnish/Sami knife makers). I thin your knife is durable and will stand the test of time. All the Best, WS

Hi WS, many thanks or watching and taking the time to comment :) I take it is a bit colder over there than here at the moment. I was recently looking at the A. Wright Bearclaw knife at the bushcraft show last year. It looks an awesome knife. I like the blade shape, very much like the LT wright GNS. Plus it is made in England. Its a shame that we lost most of our steel industry. They would of been doing a roaring trade in bushcrfat knives and axes, along with all the cutlery that used to come out of Sheffield. There is a good video made at the A.Wright factory, showing their knife been made. I will leave a link to it, if you have not seen it. I have just subbed to your channel. It looks like you have some excellent content. I will look forward to watching your videos and when you review the Bearclaw. Thanks again, all the best, Mark :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKvLlZ-fmZqAg5Y

Hello Mark, yes it is sad that the steel industry declined, several generations of my family were wood workers, shipbuilders and I recall as a lad seeing many wonderful old tools with the Sheffield Steel stamps on them (some over 100 years old). I use some of these today and it is amazing steel. I also have a very old George Wolstenholme hunting knife which is beautiful. Weather wise here in the West of Canada, it is way too mild and we have very little snow, though in the Eastern Provinces it is colder and looks like it might be moving this way at last. If we do not get heavy snow here we run the risk of major wild fire risk in the summer (as you may have seen on the news in the last few years). Thanks for the sub and I look forward to watching your videos. All the best, WS.

Hi "the dork in the woods", many thanks for watching and for the kind words. It is all a learning curve for me, but enjoying it all the same. The jacket is a Napapijri Sherpa smock. Tough as old boots. I'm not sure if they still make this jacket anymore, it must be at least 20 years old. If you Google Napapijri I'm sure they must do something similar. Thanks again.... all the best, Mark.

What is your view on this versus the GNS model?
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 7 жыл бұрын
Hi MJ Markovitch, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I like both knives the same, but for different reasons. I like both handle shapes, but it is worth holding the GNS to see how it feels. The Genesis handle is usually comfortable in most peoples hand due to its uniform shape. Both blade shapes work for me. But I must say that I prefer the pointier blade of the GNS for finer wood carving. I like both steels. During the winter time here Britain I like the A2 steel as the knife tends to be wet a lot of the time. But again the 01 steel on the GNS is still fine just as long as I spend a bit of time at the end of the day, cleaning an oiling it again. Both steels sharpen really well. I tend to only strop them unless they have caught something and I chip the edge. Thanks again MJ. Have a great day, all the best Mark.

Hi there. Enjoying your uploads. I recently bought a new Lt wright genesis. I used it to remove a strong metal staple from some packaging. I will never put that blade near metal again. I notice I put a very small chip on the edge of the blade. Would the beaver bushcraft sharpening method remove small chips from the blade?
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 2 жыл бұрын
Hi James, many thanks for watching. I did the same on another knife last week on a rock at work. I usually use whetstones when sharpening knives to remove chips. Any method will work, but it can be a long process if you are looking to remove the chip and take way the rest of the steel to keep the same profile. If it is small chip I just sharpen my knife like normal and wait until the chip disappears over time. Have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

@@markbailey2981 Thank you very much. That was really helpful information. I have one more question if you wouldn't mind. LT Wright says the genesis has a micro buffed edge on the edge of the blade from the factory. Surely it would be impossible to keep this factory edge if I were to sharpen my own knife. Does it matter if this factory edge is lost?
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesdonoghue9358 There are a couple of ways in which you can sharpen the edge. I tend to hold the bevel flat on the stone and keep it as a traditional scandi grind, or you can tilt the edge slightly and incorporate a micro bevel. The way in which LT wright sharpens them in the factory holds the edge for a long time, but you can get them just as sharp at home. It takes a bit of practice, but colouring the edge with a marker is a good visual indicator that you are keeping the edge even as you pass the knife over the stone. Then stropping them puts the finishing edge on the knife. If you check out Ben Orford's you tube channel, he has some excellent sharpening videos which go into good detail about sharpening different knives and axes etc. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)

@@markbailey2981 One more question please. I'm just wonder what you use for sharpening when you say stone. Do you use an oil stone or the double back diamond plate you show on your video. Thank you very much for all the help. I'm extremely grateful. I'm just very protective of my knife as it was expensive

I really advise against using olive oil for corrosion prevention. With age, olive oil gets gummy as it oxidizes into corrosive by-products and will even corrode stainless steels. I recommend lanolin-based corrosion inhibitors such as Fluid Film or Lanocote.
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shelter monkey, many thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. My first choice tends to be ballistol, which I have found be a great all round oil for coating steel. Thanks for the info on olive oil, I will take note :) Have a great day, all the best, Mark :)
@sheltermonkey6065
@sheltermonkey6065 4 жыл бұрын
@@markbailey2981 I know from personal experience that olive oil is corrosive and can create a terrible mess. There's a scientific paper somewhere that analyzed the compounds that it breaks down into. Ballistol works fine if corrosion is not a major problem. The lanolin-based corrosion inhibitors tend to be more effective though. Fluid Film does have petroleum oils in it in addition to lanolin. Lanocote is just lanolin and fish oil.
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 4 жыл бұрын
@@sheltermonkey6065 The information you have provided is great..... thank you :) I have found the websites for Fluid Film and LanoCote, so I will have a read once I'm settled. I have a couple for knives that I use daily at work and they need something good to help stop them corroding. As a fishing guide, most of my gear is wet most of the time, plus if I'm working along the coast, even stainless sometimes has a hard time. So I am always looking for new types of oils and protection. Have a great weekend my friend, all the best, Mark :)
@sheltermonkey6065
@sheltermonkey6065 4 жыл бұрын
@@markbailey2981 Where I am, stainless steel corrodes from just the humidity. Fluid Film don't advertise that their products have petroleum products in them in addition to lanolin, but it is disclosed in the MSDS sheets... but not what exactly it is. Most likely it is relatively benign oil. (Ballistol is probably 95% mineral oil.) I would like to try LanoCote, but I have a lifetime supply of Fluid Film.
