I’m sure filming this was a pain in the ass, but your efforts are greatly appreciated! I need to rebuild the LT230 on my 86 110, so expect hundreds of views as I muddle my way through. So valuable!

There was about 150 separate files to edit to get this into something that could be followed easy! This is why I broke them down into bite sized pieces

The way ive done it is to measure the bearing assembly's and compare them to the new bearings it'll give you an idea of shims , great video mike 👍

Great videos as usual Mike 👍. After reading both manuals, it’s occurred to me that both require the front output housing to be assembled including bearings, shaft and seal. I totally understand why you have gone about it your way and will be doing the same. I do think we have to factor in a little less rolling resistance due to NOT having the roller bearing ,shaft and seal in when doing shim check. Thanks for all your videos mate, they are invaluable to the LR community 🍺

One of the best video's yet Mike. It took me many years to get to your standard of workmanship on these transfer boxes, boy did I make some mistakes along the way. Just wished that I had have had someone like you to show how to go on, of coarse back then with the closed shop and that kind of thing you would be lucky if you got told the time of day. Best wishes and many thanks from Yorkshire Rob.

Awesome thanks Mike - really appreciate you explaining the reason behind your methods...I have a copy of both new and old manuals and following along as you progress through the build. So relieved you are demonstrating the older method without having to use the specialised tools. Thanks heaps !

Fair play Mike - hats off. More patience than me. Mine is only quiet in 4th gear so I'll be probably sending it off to someone who can sort it for me. Would like to strip and rebuild the box and transfer case myself, but would ideally like someone like you to be there showing me the ropes as I did it.

It's not easy but as I will mention in the next series when I pull apart an old LT77, I had to buy the tools as I could not afford to buy rebuilt transmissions from the UK

I would hardly think that Land Rover would use their latest book's instructions to set up the bearings preload. Good going with your alternate method.

If l remember l used a dial gauge and got the same tension by adding and subtracting shims. That was 3 years ago and no problems yet.

Yes you could use a dial gauge but I didn't have a long extension to reach the diff

Have you ever considered "Plastigauge" to measure the gap? You could use a torque wrench to generate even pressure around the bolts, that would more than likely pull down square as well.

Yet another excellent video with local links to Brendan Foster and the Great North Run that will be lost on some.....😁....Just a thought...could you use plastigauge as I don't believe it matters if it's more sticky than plasticine as you compress, measure it and then scrape it off.....?? Sorry if you'd already tried/been down that route.....as always the tried and tested ways before all these new fangled techniques came about are usually the best....😊
@BritannicaRestorations

Thanks 👍 I do not think plastigauge goes that thick

Do you know why theres so much more preload on the diff bearings compared to the input shaft bearings? There's seems to be so much variation between using the spring balance method and the dti method.

Great videos - there's no way I'd have my LT230 in bits if they didn't exist. Question on the string and spring balance method. My vehicle is a 1987 ex-army that has only done 3,500 miles. I'm putting in a drilled input shaft and upping the gearing to 1.41 from 1.667. Also trying to stop the leaks. So. They're not new bearings, but they're not really "used" - or are they? How many pounds would you be looking for on the scales if it were you doing the job?
@BritannicaRestorations

Which bearings?
@rileyv8709
@rileyv8709 3 жыл бұрын
At the 6 minute point in the video where you're talking about the load on the spring balance. So I'm using bearings that have done only 3,500 miles. To tension those would you use the 3lb setting? Or maybe something slightly higher?

Spraying the mating faces of the housings with copious amounts of WD40 or thin oil should stop it sticking but not create a significant thickness to reduce the plasticine.
