Maybe suggest Ludy lays off of the Red Bull at work. You don't need to do everything super fast. A good lad apart from that though.

Great to see Mike passing on his knowledge and expertise to Ludy. Wish I’d had that sort of mentoring when I bought my first 2A at age 18. 👍

Haven't stripped one myself for a while,love looking and finding things to fix. My lt230 is the early type and l had to drill the new input gear holes myself with a masonry drill. I caught it just in time,the input gear cover plate is a tinny looking one not like the moulded one you guys took of.😁😁

Well that was a delight! I'm a few minutes more confident and closer to tackling my transmission. Someway to go before I dare though. Would so love to get rid of the whine and splash from unknown source. Intermediate shaft now a suspect if it's the same idea on a Series 3. The working mate up between 200di and LT76 is not something I want to disturb yet or the PTO/hydraulic spaghetti.

@MrRobmellor
@MrRobmellor 3 жыл бұрын
All you need to do is stick a rubber patch ( not to stick ), such as a puncher repair patch that is bigger than the shaft, onto the end of the shaft. You will need to cut a straight edge off the patch were it is near the front output shaft casing. OR!! you can blather the end of the shaft and casing with silicone and replace the transfer box back onto the gearbox before the silicone has set. It works every time.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 3 жыл бұрын
Access would be difficult - a better idea would be maybe 2 x O rings?

@@BritannicaRestorations thats a easier way i can turn the shaft in the workshop, I will have to remove main gearbox because its in my disco also will use viton rings 👍
@MrRobmellor
@MrRobmellor 3 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations YES, that sounds like a better idea Mike. It's me that is a lazy bar steward not wanting to strip the box down to replace an :O; ring. And my way will only work if it is done when the transfer and gear boxes are apart, and put together while the silicone is not fully set.

hi dont be surprised at gunge in any gearbox - i spent a fair amount of time in the wilds of africa inc Malawi and theres a common practice of putting in" heavy "oils in anything, even grease wouldnt surprise me - so it quietens things down/stop strange noises and it has to be said it often seems to - difficult to convince people its not a good idea i did try!

@@BritannicaRestorations I'm looking forward for the next one! Btw I always remove the oil pan first, fit a cutted leftover from a main shaft of a R380 or LT77 to get an idea of the needed torque to let the shafts rotate and about the friction at the moment when they will start to move. This should be done with the drive flanges off! Also it is possible to check the axial play of the three shafts. Next I get the intermediate shaft out and feel the friction of the inputshaft and differentialshaft by hand.

I couldn't say for sure but Mike I don't think I'd be wrong in saying that the LandRover intermediate shaft "O" ring seals could be one of the biggest failures of British engineering in history...

I was thinking of a double O ring BUT the surface area would be reduced
@gazzafloss

@@BritannicaRestorations mate of mine punched a Welch plug, (slightly domed core plug type), in behind the shaft head, transfer case out for new "O" rings seals and bearing replacement of course. Has not had a recurrence of a leak on the transfer case in 5 years. I'm going to do the same to mine.

@@BritannicaRestorations he machined a bit off the end of the shaft, just left enough too back up the "o" ring, it slightly reduced the shaft contact area with the case but it's a minimal loss.

@jameshargan2786

@@BritannicaRestorations I’ve got a 28d that I want to put in my 110, and think it makes sense to refresh the centre diff - thrust washers, and planet gears if necessary - while it is off the car and relatively easy to access. Front output flange nut is really tight and not coming off without a fight, so wondering whether I need to remove it - but as I say that, I’m thinking perhaps I should be renewing front output oil seal in any event while it’s all off the car. I’ll change the intermediate shaft seal and input seal anyway, - and rear output seal when I swap the rear output housing off the lt230 in the 110. Perhaps you’re just prompted me to answer my own question; need to take it off anyway and change the front output oil seal while I’ve got easier access. 🤔 Tvm. J.
