Joe, this just shows the type of person you are... US Nationals... going all out... 100 miles into the race... you still thought to give that little gesture of thanks to the truck that pulled over to let the group pass 👍👍 (20:10). Amazing how quickly the group split apart in the deep sand section. Great footage. It would be great to see you at BWR British Columbia one of these years.

Great finish Joe! Nicely done. I was there doing the 88 race and what an incredible experience I had. Around mile 38 I turned a corner not knowing on that road the Moto came up to me and said nice job but move over the boys are coming lol. Looked back and I see a wall of pros coming. The rider with the Ventum bike and crazy mustache grabbed me and pushed me forward with them and asked if I knew who was winning the woman’s race lol. I can honestly say I rode with you pros for a short time but I didn’t finish last so it was a good day. Beautiful area to race that’s for sure. See you guys in Wisconsin on Saturday

Way to not be a pawn in Keegan's game. It benefits the attacker to make the other guy pull through and do work at their pace but not at your own expense. Bravo.

I was confused at that part - I don't know Keegan at all but initially it looked like he was getting annoyed that Joe was seemingly drafting him? That's why he said "Dude, ride!" It sounded kind of snarky but, I also am unfamiliar with race tactics.

@@glassacre Keegan pulled up the steeper part of the climb increadibly hard, then elbowed me through when it flattened out. I looked back and we still had 20 riders on my wheel, and had I pulled through there it would have put me close to my limit. with a final steeper pitch of the climb still to come, I would not have been able to follow an attack from any riders behind, so I had to play it safe so I wouldn't get dropped. While this for sure would be annyoing for Keegan, I'm not going to sacrifice my race to help him get a gap. We ended up over the top with 25ish riders, and I did a ton of work helping chase back to the two breakaways after I gained my breath back from that climb.

Great ride - love the comment to Keegan early on. Reminded me of a road race back in the 80's when I got in a break with some 7-Eleven and 10 Speed Drive guys, I was only a Cat 2, and they told me to pull through and I said it was all I could do to hang on - so they proceeded to take me off the back:). I guess by the looks of it 45's look to be the standard now. What Top Tube bag are you using - and does it work well? Again, thanks for the videos.
@jgoettl2.0
@jgoettl2.0 4 ай бұрын
@@tonykonvalin9959 thanks Tony, mostly 45’s with some guys on 50’s or mtb tires like Keegan, Dylan, and Chase! It’s the Almsthre too tube bag, I like the inside pockets to help keep my extra go pro batteries organized, then I put some extra gels in it! Only thing I recommend is getting their rubber straps, the Velcro is more seamless but it wears on your bib shorts. I also have it screwed in to my bike, but i put my phone in it for training and the extra strap helps keep it stable! I am thinking of switching to the bag that goes under the top tube though, more aero and out of the way and I believe it has two separate side pockets so I can keep fresh batteries in one side and used in the other

@@jgoettl2.0 - Thanks, yes I have a small bag with velcro and has done a job on at least one pair of short. Getting a new bike I hope in the next year so can get wider tyres as have an 2016 Orbea and can only go up to 40's. I can see the wider tyres being good even on just the deeper gravel and not just the rough stuff . Will look at the bag.

Great ride, Joe!! You proved - once again - that you can be in the battle at the front with the best in the country. Excellent video, and I look forward to watching the recap version. Were you happy with your bike setup? I'm guessing you were rolling Pirelli H 45s, yes?
@jgoettl2.0
@jgoettl2.0 4 ай бұрын
@@efraer thanks Eric! Yeah I rolled with the Pirelli gravel h’s in 45, no inserts, and felt they were great! I think the mtb tires for sure had advantages in the sand and cross winds so you could ride off the line and get a better draft, but there was also a lot of smooth fast gravel out there that these were perfect on!

Just had a realization - If you are on gravel tires instead of mtb tires, you can't ride anywhere near as close to the guy in front of you during the gravel sections and/or can't take the fastest lines without getting a flat or crashing. Mtb tires allow gravel racers to ride more like drafting road pelotons and as a result go waaaaay faster. A little front suspension to take the surprise hits doesn't hurt either. You can draft closer, switch sides easier, take the inside lines faster... They basically turn gravel into pavement and if you want to stay in the lead pack, you're going to need mtb tires to stay in there. Skinnier tires have you picking your way through stuff and you're gonna get dropped.

@@jgoettl2.0 Great info thanks! My Pinarello Grevil came with Rival 1X XPLR, 42t chainring 10-44 cassette AXS. I do a ton of climbing as I live in So Cal, so climbs like Puerco Cyn (Off of PCH in Malibu), Bulldog (Malibu) and others left me wanting lower gears. I ended up switching derailleur to an Eagle GX, with the Garbaruk 10-52 cassette 42T chainring and the gearing is amazing! But the XPLR was phenomenal minus the big gears! Thanks again look forward to more of your videos! God Bless!

@@Hokum48 no problem! Sounds like a smart decision on your part! While I don’t recommend for non pro’s, I do ok with the 46t front and 44 biggest in the rear. I was hoping the new red was going to have a 48 on it but they only went to 46 biggest cog. For me, I think it will be optimal to run run a 48t front ring with the 10-46 cassette (when/if I switch to the new red) over the mtb cassette to have the gears closer together. But I think there is still for sure a place for the mtb gearing on gravel bikes for a lot folks in mountainous areas!

Keegan already has a teammate that will completely sacrifice his own race to pace for Keegan… no one else in the race has that, they may have bike sponsor teammates but they are going for their own wins… it’s kind of annoying that he’s ordering other riders around and trying to get them to pull through. Don’t get on the front if you don’t want to do the work yourself.
