Scsrlatti has a gift that few composers have: conciseness!!! Immaculate writing and beautiful playing.

Scarlatti has a way of sounding like much later composers, such as Haydn and Chopin. But here he goes farther and I think we're witnessing The Birth of the Boogie.

What a remarkable sonata; I've never heard any quite like it. Scarlatti is possibly one of the most original composers I know. And such great fun and beauty too!

I was moved to tears by the beautiful execution of this piece. Masterful. And this happens almost never. I am not someone who usually sheds tears due to any piece of music. But today you achieved this. Well done.

That middle section is astounding; haunting almost. And I love this instrument! It's soft tone seems so apt for Scarlatti.

I guess you mean the B section (AABB). A magical Scarlattian whirlwind.

@@MrStiveun It's actually rather interesting that you mention that. In the formal academic context, I believe that Scarlatti's sonatas of this kind are strictly categorised as binary form. In this sense I would agree with you that I am referring to, specifically, the opening of the B section, as you point out. I am partial, however, to a slightly more complex view that his pieces are of a proto-sonata form. They really have the foundational elements of a sonata form, and, in this context, the middle section is the equivalent to the development section; that haunting, astounding music as I described it. Hence, taking this view into account, I do not think it is incorrect to refer to this section as a 'middle section', in between the exposition and the recapitulation. If we were to transpose from one context to the other, I should say that the A section is the exposition only, and the development and recapitulation form the B section.

Superbly crisp and clear playing, and perfectly recorded and presented. Another concise masterpiece from Scarlatti that have never heard from any other pianist. The piano tone here rings like fine bone china in the treble, but glows like warm wood in the bass; just gorgeous. Not a modern Steinway, but not a 'plucked' fortepiano either... something rare in between the two, like a Broadwood or Pleyel? Whatever it is... a magical instrument, performer and composer. Perhaps Lucas Debargue could make another 4-CD set in the future, there may be another 52 diamonds to be mined in the remaining 503 sonatas!

It's a Pleyel, as looking carefully at the video shows. I suppose that Lucas Debargue, who goes for a crisp un-resonant sound and almost never touches the pedal, likes this old instrument and it certainly seems to match his style. As for the video, it seems a bit odd to be hearing the freshness of Scarlatti in the chokingly overdecorated surroundings of a late 19th century French concert hall, but the music is the thing and he plays it very well indeed.

We are almost certainly not hearing the ~ 6ft long, antique Pleyel that Debargue is playing in the video and that likely belongs to the hall. The audio sounds exactly like the modern Bosendorfer concert grand Debargue used to record this and 51 other Scarlatti sonatas for his album. And note the absence of visible microphones. While more distant microphones could have been used, that would have produced a more obviously distant sound than the close and focused sound of the audio track of this video. So while I can’t say for sure, I conclude that the engineers dubbed the album performance into this video. I have absolutely no problem with that. Bruce Liu seems to have done something similar for the promotional videos for his new album of French piano music.
