Good grief ppl! The dude just posted a video featuring their range! He said in the description, it is not a true battle. Regardless of their different style and skill, it is still impressive. Yes, David slides into his notes a lot, but that could be part of his style too. Of course Pavarotti is one of the very best!!! Goes without saying! Nevertheless, they both sang Nessun Dorma. Pavarotti is still overall the better technician IMO (especially considering the lower ranges), which is unsurprising since we use western classical as the standard for analyzing vocal technique, and Pavarotti is one of the best classical vocalists ever (regardless of fach). But Phelps is also exceptionally skilled technically (especially for a non-classical vocalist) and as I had said in the previous video, his use of dynamics (crescendo/decrescendo, changing the weight of his mix to emote) is something that sets him apart from classical tenors like Pavarotti who're sometimes bound in the confines of the score. In the end it's mostly personal preference, whether you prefer a low or a neutral larynx, massive projection or better dynamic control, a heavier tone or a slightly lighter one, etc.
@nopejustnope7 жыл бұрын
P.S. Excellent job on compiling the clips, Rafael 😊
@rafa456o7 жыл бұрын
About the lows, Pavarotti never sang below C#3, I'm pretty sure I've saw David "supporting" this note and even lower. So we will never know. Their "supported" range are pretty equal.
@rafa456o7 жыл бұрын
Thanks :) I'm always trying to bring different clips.
@nopejustnope7 жыл бұрын
Rafael Araújo Interestingly enough I was having a discussion about David's low notes with someone just a few days ago. I could vaguely recall him supporting a C#3, but I could only find Eb3+ supported notes for him. He sometimes goes a bit airy below E3-F3. Whilr Pavarotti stays in the 4th octave most of the time, he is still a bit more consistent in the 3rd octave compared to David.
@absdyna7 жыл бұрын
Projection does not negate control of dynamics. Pavarotti was not known for his wonderful control of dyamics, (which is not to say that he lacked control of dynamics, just that he could've, should've been better, and I guess in his youth, he was) but every classical vocalist worth their salt are experts at controlling dynamics. I've even seen this in action. In my choir/chorus, the tenors had to sing an Ab for 7 measures. Most people could barely hit the note, let alone sustain it that long, on top of that, the score had marked that section as pianissimo. All of us resorted to falsetto, except the one conservatory tenor ( a spinto if you're wondering), who took the note very soft and sweet, with wonderful control. He could be heard over the whole choir, but it was also the softest, floatiest Ab you'd ever heard. Just because you could hear him over all of us, doesn't mean he was loudly belting it out. It's hard to explain, but he just floated the note on top of all the accompaniment and everyone. So, no, the right technique is not 'personal preference', it's the right technique.

*Luciano is belting the same notes with more resonance and without a mic; David Phelps is a phenomenal vocalist but there are levels to this...*
@lovestoryim7 жыл бұрын
GarageStudio David doesn't need to make that resonance because his style of music is totally different. If he chose to be an opera singer I assure he is absolutely able to make that resonance. And you know what even an opera singer can't make that resonance if they don't sing in an auditorium for Opera. All of classical concerts which perform in a stadium must use mike and amplifier for singers and orchestra.
@Bulacio_Elias7 жыл бұрын
Because the concerts are for a great mass of people, thats the reason because the concerts of opera have microphones
@lovestoryim7 жыл бұрын
ELIAS.A.B.C_YT you were right but not enough. It is also because of the structure of the stadium or concert hall can't make the echo as in the Opera house, so that the resonance opera singers make themselve can help enough without mikes. The places the contemporary singers like Phelp perform are usually bigger than an normal Opera house and the structure of them aren't for making echo, not to mention the audiences of Opera always keep quiet while contemporary music audiences usually acclaim, yell, scream during the performances. The volume of a electric guitar/bass can bigger than dozens of strings, one drumkit can be as big as the whole percussion... So I think people shouldn't underestimate the singers who have good technique as Phelp. Opera singers like Pavarotti are so great but it doesn't mean that he can sing well with other genre, and making good resonance isn't everything. There are things that you can't nail if you sing with an Opera sound.
@Bulacio_Elias7 жыл бұрын
how i say in another comment, he doesnt have a bad techniche but Pavarotti have the best techniche
@nthdegree12697 жыл бұрын
lovestoryim, You again are misinformed. Opera houses are made to be acoustical friendly, however, the Opera singer must sing against other voices and an orchestra. Another thing you leave out is that Opera is not just simply "OPERA" there are different types of Opera for different sizes of voice. For example, a leggerio tenor sings lighter material, and against much less orchestration. Most trained singers can sing at this level of volume. Pavarotti, go into the larger pieces of Opera and even still he didn't do the largest pieces like Otello. Most modern singers who sing with Microphones are relying on "MONITORS" to help them sing against other guitars and drums and it makes it a lot easier. In Opera, you have no "MONITOR" and in the heavier Opera it becomes quite difficult and tiring. That is why Opera singers who engage in Heavy pieces have a much shorter term and their singing careers last shorter. Also you are repeating things that I have already proved wrong. Opera singers have sung "other styles" effectively. Just because YOU don't think so is YOUR opinion. Vitorrio Grigolo sold PLATINUM as a POP SINGER and he proves your point wrong. Also, Pavarotti himself sang with a Pop voice on his recording of Caruso. Do you know that Pavarotti sang Caruso 2 days after listening to the Song? Did you know that? He sang with a Pop voice because his daughter asked him to. Now, Pavarotti's version of Caruso is the GOLD STANDARD by which all other versions of this POP song are judged.

I personally think opera is the hardest form of music to sing and I also think Luciano has a naturally higher voice than David (tho I do love my main man David) so I think Luciano wins but I'm really surprised at how smooth David's D5 was so bravo with that.
@Rosannasfriend7 жыл бұрын
Since when does naturally higher mean better?
@nthdegree12697 жыл бұрын
Rosannasfriend, you are correct, naturally higher doesn't equal better, but Opera singers have a lot more pressure on them to perform correctly and when they do foul up, its a catatastrophe in some cases. The phrasing, and being at the mercy of a conductor in a live settting without the aid of any amplification makes it quite difficult. When you hear a pop or rock singer off microphone, the sound will be much thinner, when you hear a good opera singer off microphone, the sound is much richer and fuller with noticeable squillo /resonance. It takes years of study to achieve that.
@berniezuniga4087 жыл бұрын
I would say David has the higher voice. Pavarotti really puts a great deal of energy and spin to produce those high C's whereas David can sing them softly and crescendo into forte. Also, David does a lot of straight tone which is harder to accomplish. We can still appreciate, however, their unique colors and power.
@nthdegree12697 жыл бұрын
Pavarotti can sing softly as well. Mezza Voce. Listen to Pavarotti singing in the part Offertorio in Verdi's Requiem. Pavarotti's part comes in about 4 minutes 50 seconds in, in the following kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGbClaqNm8psbck Beautiful full resonance, much less wasted breath, as Phelps wastes breath and sounds more breathy in the soft tones, and also a much rounder fuller sound that is required for the theater not for the microphones.

Comparing David Phelps to one of the most successful vocalists in history, is a bit unfair to David. They are too different in style and performance. Pavarotti is perhaps the best vocal technician to have walked the planet. Phelps simply isn't - although he is clearly a gifted singer.
@paulnewman46247 жыл бұрын
Jeff Hooper I agree with you completely. David isn't an opera singer despite gently dipping his toes into the odd aria ! So it is unfair on David to compare him. Pavarotti, when it comes to arias like Che Gelida Manina and Nessum Dorma David doesn't even come close and he probably knows that! That said in the arena that David sings he is without doubt at the top of his tree. Imagine a weightlifter who also needs to be an excellent ballet dancer. That somewhat describes what opera singers have to achieve.

Just listen to the overall sound of Luciano Pavarotti and David Phelps voices......Pavarotti has such a crisp clear voice, when David Phelps voice is not clear. He can sing high notes,...so what whipty ding, so can I and lot's of Opera singing friends of mine can also,..,... but not one of them is Pavarotti....Never will be,........David Phelps went out on his own thinking he would take the world by storm.....He did not make it big, so back to the Gaither Vocal Band he came....Pavarotti, on the other hand is world renowned, with such an amazing voice I actually get goose bumps....He will, forever be #1... Bellissimo Papa Pavarotti , Bellissimo !!!!

SKMRify, Opera singers or just classical singers? Pavarotti is one of the greatest lyric tenors of all time. There is of course Jussi Bjorling and others, but Pavarotti in his peak was quite good.

babystinky: Opera is a branch of classical music/singing (of course). And Pavarotti's quite overrated.

Yeah, but there are classical trained singers who don't sing Opera. Also, who says Pavarotti is overrated? ? What makes him overrated? Can you name some good Operatic Lyric Tenors?

obviously Pavarotti is more iconic but I actually think that Phelps is a better singer. His control and dynamic with notes, volume, and vibrato is something that I found Pavarotti either doesn't do or doesn't have. So based on what I've heard of each of them I think Phelps is the better singer. Dont kill me...
@urowskiilive47016 жыл бұрын
Leo Bergmiller Pavarotti has a much larger and "thicker" voice. Phelps can do these "acrobatics" with a microphone in his hand, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be able to do it without. I still prefer Phleps' style and I really am fascinated by him.

Pavarotti did it without amplification, and with straight attack (ie, no portamento).

Well let's just get this straight, David is nowhere near his prime anymore. Somewhere between 2005 and 2009 I think is when you could really start telling a difference. I'm not sure if he was abusing his voice or what exactly happened. i think he is some better than he was circa 2010 though. He does still hit high C's, but they have a lot more vibrato and you can tell he struggles for them. But if you listen to him 2006 and before, it's just absolutely amazing how he was able to hold out some of those high notes and keep them straight as an arrow (sounds like a musical instrument), then bring on the vibrato at the end. His older "Legacy of Love", "Live in Birmingham", and "O Holy Night" DVD's were all great and in all of his older Gaither videos, he hits C and C# with seemingly no problem. Fast forward to the end of these: kzbin.info/www/bejne/apqzepxtqNqhe7c and kzbin.info/www/bejne/e52tYZmfeZWfocU I'm by no means a vocal expert, but I've never heard someone sing with that kind of power. And by power I just mean how loud and awesome it sounds... very technical I know.

DarkBam1 vibrato is a good thing to have, most big voices like David usually have that natural vibrato

There are no comparison between them.Their technique both are flawless,and it just depends on personal preference. IMHO,I think David is able to interpret more genre of music while Pav is master in opera. So why compare? Stop saying who's better it is annoying.

Estilos diferentes.

Otimos tenores. Cada um com sua particularidade.
@AnimeMovement7 жыл бұрын
l know this isn't a true battle, but even if we look at how these two men are within their respective styles, Pavarotti is the clear winner. He can be considered the gold standard for tenors in the modern era (and has been for years). Even respective to his style, he is elite. David is a great pop and Gospel singer, but I wouldn't say he's one of the "best," though he is great in his mixed range.
@rafa456o7 жыл бұрын
He is in my Top 3 by far. His head voice is also great, and his lows are pretty good for a high tenor.
@AnimeMovement7 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong, he is great, but I seriously don't buy the argument that his lows are good for a high tenor. There are sopranos with better lower registers. His lower chest register is extremely underdeveloped. He's got great mixing technique, but I'm not really wowed by anything else. His singing can be sloppy sometimes when not belting (a few of his Nessun Dormas, for example). There are certainly other contemporary artists with much greater control of their voices as a whole.
@rafa456o7 жыл бұрын
This is on of his lowest notes and it's pretty consistent: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJy1aWZtmLOKo68 Here too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHTZeXmmebqZY8U About Nessun Dorma, I can't expect anything better than this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmaYimiYjtZ0fbM As a singer (and tenor) I wish I could have his lows
@rafa456o7 жыл бұрын
I can't think on much people that can master his voice as he does. In the dynamics is where he shines for me, not only in the mix as you said. Really, his control is out of this world. Please, if you can give me some names I will thank you, because I will bring those peoples to my channel for sure.
