I felt for both of them, Butcher and Soldier boy are exactly alike, both grew up hating their fathers but ended up just like them. Soldier boy failed Homelander and hates that. Cause now Homelander is just as big an asshole as he is. Butcher is right on the edge of repeating the same mistake as Soldier boy with Ryan.

The fact that this scene made many of us genuinely feel terrible for the level of MONSTER Homelander is just a perfect testament to the writers and Anthony's performance. I was almost heartbroken for this damn child killing psycho.

Soldier boy feels just as much pain because he knows how it feels to grow up constantly seeking approval just to ruin yourself, but he prob wanted his future kid to have him around to encourage and support him. There is so much pain for both of them in this moment. A father, wracked with the loss of what could have been, and the guilt of what is, looking into a mirror and heartbroken with the son he sees looking back. That son, tortured by a lifetime of neglect and abuse, and now finding callous rejection in the one person he was finally putting all of his hope into. Denied a family again. Generational trauma, bred into sociopathic Gods, coming full circle. These two actors are genuinely incredible, and this scene is one more that proves it. They play off of eachother amazingly, but even taken by themselves, the emotion they manage to convey with just their facial expressions, and the tones in their voices are gut wrenching. These two can say more with fewer words because of how they say it, and thats genuine talent. Its beautiful to watch them work.

Any man who hates himself in this manner is pathetic. He’s sympathetic. Because he is any human born and raised without love, attention & empathy. When you calculate all the “bad” that Butcher has done, Frenchie, Kimiko, Victoria, A-train, etc. Homelander is not the worst person in the series. He is the only one with a good excuse for being fucked up. Just take this scene for example. Butcher, Maeve & Soldier Boy are there to kill Homelander. Whereas Homelander wants to make peace with his Father. So although he only has a shred of humanity, it’s more than the others have. That’s why I unapologetically pull for Homelander. Would love a twist from the comic where he gets a redemption arc and if he dies, goes out as a Hero.

Like we know he is a horrible monster but we can see why he became what he became and thats the tragedy of it. Its more of an indictment on society more than homelander. The actor that plays Ryan he is one of two twin brothers on the show and keep with the child's work code one works in the morning and the other one works in the afternoon 4 hours each plus school for 2 hours when they're on the set this was done after the Twilight zone movie disaster when child actors at work for 8 hours on the set when that s*** happened the helicopter accident that's when the Hollywood started putting in the rules once the state of California put their fist down said no more child actors working in 8 hours it's going to be 4 hours minimum with 2 hours from school if they're using twins well 4 hours for each child if it's twins plus 2 hours for school even if they're working oversee the same rule is still apply in Hollywood studios reach that agreement with other countries like Canada and Mexico in regards to child labor laws in the film industry
