Welcome to Lucifer, where Dr. Martin gives him great advice and he misinterprets it to fit his own narcissism *every. Single. TIME.* 😂

Chloe and Lucifer's relationship is one of those things that just has to be taken as part of a fictional TV show that would not translate well to the real world. Within in the context of the show, Lucifer never creates a situation where a no from Chloe would ever be taken as anything other than a no. He leaves when he's told to leave, he never makes a move on her, and he doesn't make any attempt to tie his continued assistance to her sleeping with him. Even when he crosses the line and walks out in front of her naked, he stops halfway across the room, doesn't approach her, and there's always a direct line between her and the door. But people in the real world are virtually never like Lucifer, so his behavior is not something to be emulated or accepted. Hell, Lucifer's not even a person. He's literally an angel.

The whole no means no is a blurred line with Lucifer. He shoots his shot and says a lot of out there shit, BUT he never makes a physical move. There is always a certain distance between them. Him trying out the “list” is his attempt of winning Chloe over since his usual lines are not getting him anywhere. He came out naked but ran away as soon as she showed genuine concern. Very well acted too. The subtle change in his voice and demeanor *chefs kiss*

Not sure if we can judge Lucifer on the same basis as another human. Firstly, he isn’t human. He hasn’t had the world dating experience that someone of his appearing age should have had. Secondly, the show has taken some pains to show that Lucifer inability to sense Chloe’s hidden desires is a new concept for him. He has never had to do more than use his superpowers to know what to say or do to convince a woman or man to jump in bed with him. Finally, the “Players Club” is a gross and disgusting enterprise that would have been recognized as such by the audience that watched it when the episode was first shown. Lucifer temporarily latches on to its concepts as something to help him understand how to interact with Chloe without his powers. It helps to think of Lucifer as if he were a 14 year old boy in a man’s body. He is learning adult human interactions almost from scratch.
@LeeCarlson

The biggest issue is that there are things like the "Player's Club" (though mostly they are online) that draw their clientele from men who have been rejected by women for whatever reason and seek a "surefire formula" for having sex with any woman that they want to.

Trixie knocked it out of the park this episode. Actually, every time she shows up. Such a shame she got a better role and didn’t have as much time for Lucifer.

I liked this episode because I felt that it was a turning point. Lucifer told Amenadiel in a previous episode that he didn’t like the same thing again and again so he is intrigued by his vulnerability, even if it’s a little scary. He left Hell because he was bored, and sick and tired of torturing souls which he believed his Father wanted him to do. Lucifer is always the rebel 😉 For an immortal, a being who lives forever, how long would a vacation be?? He’s been in L.A. for 5 years but that’s just a drop in the bucket for an immortal. Amenadiel gets a new experience…a “pure” angel feels something new…how funny is that 😋 Maze, a demon who never feels fear, is now afraid for Lucifer and of course, herself. Who knows what this human world will do to them if they stay?? Yikes!!! And Chloe who just saw Lucifer bleed is relieved that he is just another human like her so she probably thinks he’s just bonkers 😂 Lucifer also experiences his first real vulnerable moment when Chloe touches his wing scars 😊 Love it all ❤ Thanks for reacting!

No means no, except when it doesn't... No society has not moved forward since this was filmed in my view. As to your many questions about the story or various layers of stories, all will be revealed in good time. And yes, you would think Angels (of which it has been revealed Lucifer was once one of Heaven's brightest by Amenadiel) had some more advanced morals and understanding of things, but they are beginning to appear more like awkward teenagers with regards to emotions and interactions - while Dr Linda seems more like the wise one dispensing wisdom from on high.... (all sorts of delicious story elements and ironies like this are the essence of this show) Lucifer is thrilled at experiencing these new to him sensations, interactions, etc, while both Maze and Amenadiel see it as wrong or dangerous to immerse with or interact with humanity...

Anna, Lucifer is really a swiss-army knife of TV shows. The procedureal cop show, is a Sitcom for the relationship between Celestials and Mortals. Then you have the RomCom between everyone. This Lucifer was a comic book. So you have the Supernatural aspect with Celestial beings. Lots of stuff in this show. 🌹☮️🌹😃
@lightningg252
@lightningg252 5 ай бұрын
I really enjoy the take on the Celestial beings in this show. The most drastic difference between them and us is that they we are mortal, we have a ticking clock that urges us to grow an make the most of our time. But Celestials don't, they could go eons without changing because there is no urgency for them; on top of which there has always been a separation between them and humanity. They have never these experiences before so naturally they have a child like naiivity when it comes to the quintessential aspects of being human.

The first season was 2016, and I think the whole me too thing has blown up a year later. Regarding no mean no, I live in Germany and I would say that is here true as well, I am not sure if that makes it universal. But then I would argue that most of the western world is heavily influenced by US films and TV.

This is one of my favorite episodes from the first season. Lucifer is hilarious, he also shows some intriguing vulnerabilities, there's the whole actually getting shot thing, and you have the great side fight scene between Maze and Amenadiel. And it sets up some interesting questions for future episodes. All great stuff!

This episode IS about the “no means no” movement. Notice that Maze says it to Amenadiel at the end of their talk. Lucifer never tries to force Chloe into sleeping with him. And these kinds of “Clubs and Lectures” about winning women over still do exist today, specially on the internet. They are actually quite popular right now, just like the “Traditional Wife” movement… So no, we haven’t improved, society is still shit. But Lucifer isn’t. He talks a lot of crap here, but acts much better in later episodes. And I agree with another comment that he is like a teenager entering the human world of feelings and social interactions for the first time with Chloe because before he never had to do anything to have people falling head over heels for him.

This episode contains such differences. I think it's fair to say that the show itself did one of the things on that list, "take risks". Lucifer poking at the idiocy of the player thing, but also himself being obnoxious. And at the exact time of him being obnoxious, there is this Shift and we see him his most vulnerable instead. So beautiful.

I dont think its universal. Maybe in western countries. But it seems many countries still blame women for being raped, shame them for consensual sex before marriage, honour killings etc There seems to be a lot of victim blaming even in western countries which points to people not believing in consent, like it is your fault because you wore shorts on a hot day.

The discussion exist in Sweden as well, but not at all in the same extreme as in USA from my understanding, USA seems to be all about "Go hard, or go home" i would like to say we are better at using common sense, we don't need as many PSAs for everything, don't have a source for that, but it's my understanding (and the fact that we barely have any PSAs at all, and we still don't in a barbaric way, kinda speaks for it self)

24:33 Dawn Olivieri is best known for her roles in: Heroes (2009-2010) as Lydia "The Painted Lady", and in House of Lies (2012-2016) as Monica Talbot. Also has had various parts in: The Vampire Diaries (2011), The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (2010-2012), Secrets and Lies (2016), The Hot Zone (2021), ... 27:32 well over here in Eastern Europe it's somewhat less of an issue, we've got other shit to dwell on. But we still follow a bit of the US cultural goings-on so it's not entirely missing.

Just a note - the very tail end of your outro got cut off. Now, as to the show and this episode... I had to look it up, but Lucifer first came out in 2016, so only 8 years ago. I gotta be honest, I don't think things have really changed all THAT much - I feel like even then there was a big push for consent in all things, though maybe that's intensified a bit in the intervening years. And of course there was a pandemic in the middle which caused not only some big changes, but also some subtle ones that I don't think we as a society have fully realized yet. Although, I'm 51 years old and have been happily married for 25 of those years, so what the hell do I know about the dating world? Regardless, I do remember a time when those pick-up artist seminars were a real thing, going at least as far back as the late 90s, though I have no idea if that's still a thing. I do remember Tom Cruise doing an excellent pick-up artist character in the movie Magnolia, and that was '99. I do love this episode, and I think I love it even more looking back on it in hindsight. I obviously won't give away spoilers, but there's so much groundwork laid here for things to come. Not so much in the plot of the episode itself, but in the character development moments. Having seen the whole series, I can see certain threads that started here and carried through the entire rest of the show. Really loving your reactions, and glad you're checking out Lucifer, and glad you seem to be enjoying it.

Once you have watched the entire show -> pretty much many of your questions at this stage will be answered one way or another sometimes in several episodes several seasons later - you are only at S1XE04 ... and the entire show has 6 seasons ... the show is pretty much well written overall = for example L's vulnerability in this episode (and all of that) is explained later on in multiple stages in several episodes ... IMO several huge revelations happen only in seson 5, etc. ...

The pickup artist thing is very real. Lately I have seen people reacting to a video of a guy basically saying if a girl turns you down, you don't have to take no for an answer and then starts telling you how to try and trick her into changing her mind. I'll admit I looked into it when I was a teenager until I realized how slimy the whole thing was and had neither the desire nor energy to participate in such skeezy behavior.

It's a bit confusing at the beginning of the series but I noticed that every reaction I see to this people are irritated by Dan's judgmental comments to Chloe. I actually think Dan DOES have a right to voice his opinion because he and Chloe are not divorced and haven't even discussed it (as far as we know). They are recently separated when the show starts. There is a bit more to it but I want to be careful of spoilers. Also, Trixie is seven this season and seeing another man in the house when her mother is not exactly dressed might be confusing or upsetting for her if she wants her parents back together. For those reasons I don't mind Dan's comments. Otherwise... yeah, mind your own business. 😉

Neil Gaiman created the original Lucifer comic character. Neil likes to paint in grey. None of his main characters are absolutely good and his villains are not completely evil. Is Lucifer breaking into Chloe's house to make breakfast wrong? Yes. But Lucifer is not supposed to be the Paragon Champion of What-You-Should-Be. Lucifer is the Fool starting his journey of Enlightenment. He is simply a "what if..." What if a being that is boundless encounters boundaries? They are foreign concepts. Does "No" mean "no." Of course, but Lucifer has never been rejected. The closest he has had to rejection is someone answering the "What do you want?" as something other than him. But that isn't a real rejection. He punishes people for doing wrong, but he lacks the ability to see his own actions as wrong. That is where Linda (the psychiatrist) comes in. Lucifer is Pinocchio trying to be a real man, and she is his Jiminy Cricket to guide him. But Linda also has issues. Because she is human and flawed. Chloe should have shot Lucifer in her house, but she didn't which tells Lucifer it must not have been that bad or threatening. Chloe didn't because she doesn't want to hurt people, she wants to protect them. But Lucifer couldn't understand that. Since all he does is punish, his logic follows "If what I did was truly wrong, then she would have punished me for it. I was not punished, so it must be a little ok." I like shows like Lucifer because it sparks conversations about right and wrong, punishment and forgiveness, intolerance vs leniency. If you want other neil gaiman shows i recommend Stardust, American Gods (Max), Sandman (Netflix), Caroline, Good Omens (Amazon Prime).

Show Lucifer is a lot more of a light side character than comics Lucifer at his best. And comics Lucifer can be a bastard worse than anything he does in the show. Hell, he's a straight up villian for a while. A grey villian, not completely evil, but *not* good. It doesn't help that, short of his father, almost no being has a chance against him. Like the literal lord of Dreams replies. Lucifer: "Why sweet Morpheus... are you scared of us?" Morpheus: "Yes" You're goddamn right. They are both amazing characters. But of the two, the show version is the one I'd rather exist.

so about the discussion of consent. where i live it is very simple, if someone does not want to sleep with you, you dont, it is not at all complicated. but i do think america talks about it a lot, which might give some people the impression most times a no is not a no. but as a guy i can tell you there is a difference between no and no. one is a ''no, stop.'' the other is a ''no, but... go on''. but this is not limited to women. also, from my own experience women have a much harder time to accept no than men do. ive told women a stern and serious no and they thought i was joking, because as a single straight guy i wouldnt turn down a woman, would i? and as someone on the autism spectrum, the no and no is a nightmare. i am crap at picking up subtle social cues directed at me. so if i hear no, i hear no, and not whatever hidden meaning might be behind it. this has cost me a lot of chances to get laid.😂

Consent is important, for sure, but it's not a new, modern thing. I grew up in the 70's, 80's and 90's and there's always been that 'no means no' phrase through every single decade. It's surge of importance now also hasn't made a difference in the importance of consent to the people it's meant to discourage since statistics show that there's been very little fluctuation in the number of sexual assaults per year between 1991 and 2022. The player convention thing was pretty sleazy, but it's something I can totally imagine being based on an actual thing that goes on, and has gone on, but has remained under the radar to most people for obvious reasons. I've been subscribed to you for a good while now, but I'll admit that I haven't watched your channel that I can remember, and I can't remember what I must've watched to get me to click that subscribe button, but the quality of your commentary and vocabulary alone tell me why I must've. Is it just me who eye rolls when Anna gets so worked up over Dan commenting on things? Like they are separated, not divorced and only fairly recently right? Is it that strange to hope to reconcile and rekindle a relationship, a relationship where a child is involved, so you can never really have a clean break, you will be in each others lives for years or decades? And Lucifer is seen as an obstacle to this? And commenting on her sleeping with Lucifer, a crazy shady club owner (as far as dan is aware) who could harm her career, their potential relationship or something else you wouldnt want for someone you care about? Just seems the reaction to Dan is too extreme or harsh.

I disliked this episode. I dont think that Chloe would worry that Lucifer would not take a no - he has. It starts the trend of Lucifer getting good advice from the doctor and running in the exact opposite direction with it... While a great comic motif, kinda strains the credibility of the plot. It becomes another hurdle for the show to overcome.
