The Smiling Knight is another good one but it's only effective because we learn that in reality, he was an infamous criminal. This gives us an image of a killer deranged enough to take great pleasure in hurting people. With the Laughing Storm though, we dont need much more than that to see him as a great champion skilled both in battle and courtly appeal

Another fascinating adventure into mythology, symbolism, and the importance of conflict between humanity and nature (supernatural) in Martin's world. The emphasis on the Fair Folk, ancient trees, ancient barrows, conflict between people and ancient forest spirits, and many of the other points discussed in the video reminded me a lot of the opening chapters of Fellowship of the Ring. We know George is inspired by Tolkien's work with a goal of subverting or adapting elements of it to make it fit his vision of the world and of morality. What if the world he was building and the core symbolic components drew inspiration from elements of Tolkien's Old Forest and the myths behind it? In Middle Earth, the Old Forest was a dark and ancient woodland made up of oaks, ash, and other ancient trees. This is the home of the oldest beings in the world, born long before the elves awoke on the far side of the world. The three oldest beings are Tom Bombadil, Goldberry, and the corrupted and vengeful tree spirit Old Man Willow. The Old Forest was the last of what was once a vast wood, cut down by wave upon wave of beings arriving in Middle Earth, until the ancient magical forest was reduced to a fragmented and shadowy patchwork. The tree shepherds, Ents, now just a legend rarely seen by common folk. Bombadil relates that of the corrupted trees of the Old Forest, "none were more dangerous than the Great Willow; his heart was rotten, but his strength was green; and he was cunning, and a master of winds, and his song and thought ran through the woods on both sides of the river. His grey thirsty spirit drew power out of the earth and spread like fine root-threads in the ground, and invisible twig-fingers in the air, till it had under its dominion nearly all the trees of the Forest from the Hedge to the Downs." The Hedge Tom Bombadil refers to is the giant living wall created by the ruling family of the Hobbits to hold back the ancient forest that seeks to reclaim the land from the settlers that usurped it. For many many generations, the Bucklanders maintained the hedge to guard against the danger of a vengeful forest on the other side. The only way through it was a great private gate that the ruling family could access to clear back the forest from the far side of the hedge to prevent the trees from invading Buckland. Within the forest was a tributary river called the Withywindle that flowed to the Brandywine. The entire forest acted as a catchment for the Withywindle, funneling and channeling the water and everything else towards a specific point, the clutches of Old Man Willow (the weir/garth/ancient demented tree that ensnares and consumes people). Old Man Willow represents corrupted nature, the fusion of the tree with an imprisoned and vengeful ancient mind poisoning the living world around it with darkness. Tolkien writes of "how that grey thirsty earth-bound spirit had become imprisoned in the greatest Willow of the [Old] Forest." On the far eastern edge of the forest, we find the Barrow Downs, the ancient burial mounds of long-dead men. The wights of these men still haunt the mounds. These are based on the ancient barrows, passage tombs, and cairns of Britain, Ireland and the Northern European legends. For the Irish, they are the homes and palaces of the Fair Folk, also known as the People of the Mounds. Tolkein's Barrow-wights come from draugrs of Norse myth, so we can learn something important about George RR Martin's symbolism from the multi-faceted meaning of "draugr" in Old Norse poetry. While the most visible and common form of draugr is the undead knights or spirits of ancient warriors that do battle with Icelandic or Norse heroes for the treasures (or magical weapons) buried with them in their tombs/palaces. What makes the concept of draugr more interesting in our case is the double meaning of the word through the Old Norse concept of kennings, which uses wordplay to add meaning. The other meaning of draugr, "a tree trunk or dry dead wood, or in poetry could refer to a man or warrior," comes from one of the Norse origins of humanity. One belief is that Odin created the first men from trees, so in Norse poetic wordplay, a felled tree's trunk has the same symbolic meaning as a dead man's corpse. We have seen these revenant undead all over the place in ASOIAF so far and the connection to the trees is highly visible. The Starks are the children of the First Men, born of the trees, and the keepers of the largest and grandest portal tomb/barrow mound in Westeros. Based on the proximity of Winterfell to the Barrowlands and the construction of Winterfell atop a massive portal tomb or barrow mound, the Starks could be living in a draugr's palace, guarding the dead and the hidden treasures buried deep in the Otherworld below. The iconography of wolves for the Starks adds to this from the symbolic connection between wolves and death/the dead in Celtic and Norse mythology. The Norse saw wolves as the untamable force of nature while also associating them with the cyclical nature of life and death. Celts in Ireland saw wolves as the intermediaries between the living and the dead with the ability to communicate with spirits. In the Fellowship of the Ring, when the hobbits escape the trance and death ceremony of the wight, Merry (the keeper of the key to the Hedge gate) wakes remembering "only a death not his own" with the personality of the dead warrior's spirit within him freed from the evil corruption of the Witch King's wight. This fits well with the idea that some of our heroes in ASOIAF may need to enter the trance of the dead to rescue the dead warriors/trees from the evil corruption preventing the world from healing.
@DavidLightbringer17 сағат бұрын
hey it's a super long comment that was actually outstanding, thank you. Yes there is certainly more to be said about draugrs and wights in Norse myth and how that influences ASOIAF, and I love the bit about them being analogous to felled or rotting trees. That askr / embla myth is one I think GRRM is thinking about. That's cool about Old Man WIllow, it's been a while since I've read the main books. Sounds like something worth exploring re: the corruption of the weirnet and the idea of AA's dead spirit being in there as the Great Other

Couldn’t the Green Men just be isolated humans who took on traditions of the Children after the Pact, and became like one of our modern day uncontacted tribes? Antler/horn head gear and clothes to blend into nature aren’t uncommon either. But I agree they’re very related to the Children, the Others, the old legends like Garth. If they are actually nonhuman… perhaps a twist would be they’re dragon-human hybrids, green/gray-scaled and dragon horns. Some fire to go along with the ice.

@jenniferarmstrong887919 сағат бұрын
Been praising Garth so follow me on this one… The white walkers were formed when the tree was set ablaze. The tree was poisoned by frozen fire in the form of a flaming sword/meteor sword/piece of obsidian. This set the tree ablaze, burning out the spirits from within the weirwoods. They are the shadowy spirit babies of the woods, birthed by a silent dead weirwood mother. So the story about the Gray King taunting the Storm God who set a tree ablaze, is about a green man poisoning a weirwood tree to basically produce a shadow baby assassin. Which is to turn a tree into a warrior, a tactic the children used against the Ironborn.
@jenniferarmstrong887919 сағат бұрын
This also parallels the forging of the Storm Lord’s blade in Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn. Ineluki (sp?) poisoned the Witchwood trees with iron, and then use this corrupted wood to forge the blade sorrow. It happened to take 3 attempts. Shout out to GrayArea’s series on these books and ASOIAF.

Is Ned cleaning Ice in the Weirwood pond at Winterfell an ancient ritualistic threat to the Others? Like they can see through the face and know there is a badass with a big sword keeping the blood magic corruption alive and therefore behave themselves? Like good old Ned knows to clean his sword specifically there like his ancestors have for millennia. It's clearly a blood sacrifice, but also feels very threatening at the same time

Maybe the blood magic used to create the others from the green man also turned the weirwood trees bark white and the leaves red. It would make sense that if the green man changed to look like the others, then the trees they were connected to also changed as well.
@eyyitsyaboi23 сағат бұрын
Just curious, if the white walkers are exiled green men, why did they manifest as Ice demons? Why the element of Ice? Why do they stop communicating with humans and become murderhobos? Why do the others not resemble Cernunnos when Stannis' Shadow baby resembles him? In my headcanon, it makes more sense if the white walkers are shadowbabies of the Night's Queen, and the night's queen serves the great other. The great other and the nights queen serve as counterparts to Rhollor and Melisandre. It would explain what keeps the land of always winter, always winter. You would need a God deciding to adopt the element of ice, the way rhollor adopted the element of fire, and that god would have to use immensely powerful magic to keep an area of a slightly higher latitude than Braavos behaving like the artic. I find it hard to believe that ejecting green men from weirwoods makes them manifest as icy shadow beings, and turned a huge land mass constantly snowy. In terms of what turned the weirwoods white, It's plausible that the others went on a green man killing spree during the first long night and completely wiped out weirwoods and green men from essos. During the second long night, the others killed green men throughout westeros, but did not reach the god's eye which is why the green men and green weirwoods are still preserved in the gods eye. It would also explain why the old gods have a vested interest in destroying the others. If the old gods are green men, then I guess the others are the old gods, but they are also in conflict with the old gods? that doesn't make much sense to me. It would also explain why Rhollor has a vested interest in fighting the others, as the great other is a rival god and I suppose they are fighting for territory.
@DavidLightbringer23 сағат бұрын
- why ice demons? because Martin wants to worth with cycle of the seasons nature folklore. it all goes with the idea of a long night / long winter. also its based on Norse folklore of fire and ice giants - stags lose their antlers in the winter - they are the children of NQ, but she is a weirwood woman of some kind. Most of the NQ characters have weirwood associations, like Lyanna, Val, Alys Karstark, Sansa and Cat, etc. She would be the one giving the homeless green man spirits the ice bodies with blood magic at the Nightfort, where there's a huge weirwood organism - the 'great other' is Azor Ahai, who invaded / defiled the wwnet when he killed Nissa Nissa, a cotf (imo)
@eyyitsyaboi23 сағат бұрын
@@DavidLightbringer Thanks for the reply, but could you please explain why the land of always winter is always winter? Also does the NQ need the night's king seed if she is simply rehousing exiled green man spirits? Also why are the other's muderhobos when they seem friendly as green men in their past life? is Azor Ahai ordering them to wantonly kill?
@eyyitsyaboi22 сағат бұрын
@@DavidLightbringer Also, last question I promise :) If the first long night happened in Essos, as exemplified by the five forts, and as you suggested, the bloodstone emperor causing the long night, and that he is the same person as Azor Ahai, does that mean that Azor Ahai invaded the weirwood net in Essos first? Or did he fly over to Westeros on his Dragon and invade the weirdwood net there, and sent the others by an icy land bridge or something?

nother thing, the red bloody sap and leaves of weirwoods could represent the physical bodies of these sacred forests while the blue starry eyes and streaks could represent their spiritual bodies. Kinda like in Narnia with drysds being made from flowers and leaves and such of their host trees. But red and blue here not being just fire snd ice, but earth and sky, the female and male.
@JessSimpson13134 сағат бұрын
Regarding "Can you plant a Weirwood Tree?", yes you can. You are also right the roots do have to connect to the rest of the weerwood root system for it to grow. This comes from the chapter discussing that unlike every other castle (I'm guessing not including dorne) the northerns brought a Weirwood Tree to as a gift, the attempts at planting on in the Eyrie always failed, which they dont put much attention to in book but as we the audience know the Eyrie has a solid rock base we are left to wonder if the Weirwoods connect to each other physically, not just magically.
@DavidLightbringer2 сағат бұрын
it doesn't say how the attempt was made tho - did they take a cutting from a living weirwood? We've never seen seeds. You can't tear one out of the ground. I'm guessing a cutting... it's interesting that it's not specified
@JessSimpson13132 сағат бұрын
@DavidLightbringer I'd always assumed it was a cutting but hadn't thought much of the mechanics they used, given GRRM was also involved in Elden Ring which has a small mountain of lore around tree maintenance it would be wild if it ended up being important to the story of ASOIAF.
@ninjalokust21 сағат бұрын
I would argue as well, that Neds death and the theft and splitting of the stark family sword is also indicative of the problem with the weirwood net. After the sword is used to kill Ned and his blood flows down the blade, it is reforged and stolen by the Lannisters, only its metal is now blood red. Something similar may have happened with the weirwood net, the original "owner" was killed, and the net was stolen and then split in half causing the leaves of those trees to turn blood red.

i cant wait for the nights watch video. that theory makes a lot of sense to me tbh. im kinda wondering if sam didnt even kill the white walker. he just freed the other from some kinda magic, and said other reverts to his original identity, coldhands, and coldhands was a nightsking era nightswatch man who was sacrificed to the weirwoods and turned into an other. or maybe coldhands was just what used to be a "normal" nights watch man, and the watch just stopped doing that over time for whatever reason. i really gotta rewatch the og green man/nightswatch video. it was so freakin good. it makes a lot of sense to me that the greenmen/children of the forest where cooporationg with the original colonists from the great empire of the dawn, when war broke out between the empire and the people (magical and human colonist) of westeros. with sights like the neck / moat cailen / the battle isle being places where the geotd had footholds. and then the others seem to have originateted or split off from the children of the forest and weirwoods and green men around that time.

i think it's possible the walkers can't really be killed, exactly. You can pop one of their bodies but where does the spirit go? If it's a hivemind, it's just costing them the magic power it takes to form a body or whatever. There is no finite number of white walkers, perhaps. i talked about this in the ice spiders video

Also side note, I would watch any mythology/lore deep dive of yours but Narnia would be great. Same with the Golden Compass series, which includes a lot of human spirits inside animals

Watchers are the fallen angels, the Nephilim their half-angel/half-human children. Interestingly, like the Green Men (at least in the scrapped Blood Moon pilot) the Watchers were serving as advisors to humankind, teaching them astronomy, metallurgy and other useful skills. Humankind grew corrupt, the Nephilim wrought havoc and the Watchers were imprisoned.."in valleys under the earth." Hmm.

What do you call the Braavosi assassin's bookkeepers? Faceless bureaucrats.

Do you think that the weirwood net was once a way that the green men and children could teleport. Maybe they could step into it in one region and instantly step out in another place? I believe there is good forshadowing for this in the prologue when it talks about the way the whites just appear from the trees. Just a thought since we believe all the weirwoods are connected.

Yes please for Narnia. I love those stories . So the greenmen have hooves and horns? Hmm. Like your new set up, do you have a teleprompter?
@DavidLightbringer21 сағат бұрын
no, I glance over to the side and read a sentence or two, then turn to the camera and deliver it, back and forth. The teleprompter look is just too weird I hate it
