I just bought one, not a retractable, this year...and I love it.

This was a re-narrated clip from an original documentary from the History Channel called Automobiles. This was featuring the 1955-57 Chevys. They made around 25-30 episodes from 1994-96

Fred and Ethel Mertz singing a jingle for Ford. which was the great Marty Robbins song "Singing the Blue's" with changed lyrics. and Fred Mertz saying there's nothing like a new Ford to make you feel young again. at the end how AWESOME is that.

The song that Fred and Ethel are singing is a reworking of a hit song called "Singin' The Blues". At least one other ad used the original singer (whose name I can't think of right now) performing it. The original first line: "Well, I never felt more like singin' the blues" was changed to "Well, I never felt more like shoutin' hurray". And so on.
@musicauthority78283 жыл бұрын
It was the great Marty Robbins Country music singer and stock car driver.
@hebneh3 жыл бұрын
@@musicauthority7828 Marty did it first, but then Guy Mitchell did a cover which became more popular. Guy sang it with different lyrics in a Ford commercial: "The frame inside this Ford is new / There's new ball joint suspension too / It rides you down so sweet and low / You'll never know there's bumps below..."

remembering back a cousin had a 59 the biggest problem was leaking where the roof splits and at the windshield witch was a issues with most convertibles. I had a 63 Chevy rag-top always having to tighten top lock downs to keep it from leaking

@themaytagrepairman Thanks for sharing that. I've heard that Ford had a lot of trouble making this work. Funny how it's commonplace now.

It was a nice design, but the thing was more of a novelty. President Eisenhower had one in the White House. This was not the first retractable car top. The first one came out in 1934 in France. Nice to see Lucy. George Vreeland Hill

mrpitv, do you know how much Ford paid Lucy & Desi for the sponsorship?
@nlpnt4 жыл бұрын
Late to this but I think they were I Love Lucy's main sponsor that year so they'd have basically underwritten the cost of producing the whole show. Probably ponied up a small fleet worth of cars too.

I love the old cars. They were comfortable, ran more smoothly, could go faster, and the owner could fix it themselves. None of the computerized widgets that jacked up the price and cost $500 to get fixed. Lifetime payments and maintenance on today's new cars cost more than a house when you add them all together. I can turn my headlights on and off by myself. I don't need computerized safety steering. People were not such idiots back then. My 2001 Chevy Blazer was cheaper and more solid than the new VolksWagens and more reliable. If only the drivers back then took safety a little more seriously.

The one piece retractable roof was first put on a Chrysler New Port. It was a very limited run and was never used again by Chrysler.

Are you sure about the Chrysler Corp. having the first retractable HARDTOP on a NEWPORT? R U SURE OF THIS? I KNEW Ford had the hydralics DOWN PAT when it came to the convertible top dissappearing into the trunk, Christmas 1962 Santa Brought a Red Thunderbird with a black convertible hardtop that went down in the Trunk, it steered with forward & reverse, batt.2 D's operated, thought I had the neetest TOY Santa ever created, still have it in the attic...It was such a HIT....

YES! The 1940 Chrysler Thunderbolt concept car had a one piece retractable hardtop roof. The 1940 Newport was a deal-cowl phaeton.

@stellarblue51 Well, I only said I thought Ford in 57 looked better,not that they were better. The 55-57 chevys were(and are)better built cars as they're a lot more still around. Some years chevy looked better, other years Ford. I like GM better in the 50s and 60s, but I like Ford more today then GM
@musicauthority78283 жыл бұрын
In 1957 the Ford was lower and sleeker and handled better. it had more modern control arm ball joint front suspension and steering components. and outsold Chevrolet that year. however the Skyliner was different they were longer and heavier and didn't sell to good. but the retractable hard top came back again in the sixties on Lincoln Continentals and sold better also. in 57 Ford beat everyone to the punch with the introduction of the Ranchero and it was a hit.
