how to diagnose an overheating issue Chevy HHR

in this video I am diagnosing a overheating issue I supplied pressure to the cooling system and found the leak coming from the bypass cap easy simple repair

I eliminated the bypass cap on my 2011 2.4 l by ordering a thermostat housing for a 2007, 2.2 HHR , which doesn’t have the bypass! Future leaks eliminated!

what can cause the coolant gage on dash board to vary as i drive whenever i go up hills it starts reading a high temp and goes down unless i level off
