I try out a cheap amplifier module featuring a PAM8403 chip by hooking it up to some speakers and playing some tunes. This device is a 3W+3W dual channel (stereo) class-D audio amp in a SOIC-16 package.
The amplifer module I purchased:
www.aliexpress.com/item/New-Mi...
The speakers in the video are from Jaycar, catalogue number AS3034:
www.jaycar.com.au/Sight-%26-So...
The Datasheet is available here:

With a properly designed pre-amp, these blow the LM386 out of the water as a sweet little guitar amp. Keep the speaker leads short, so that you don't have interference issues. Use a genuine guitar speaker. I like using the new single-supply rail-to-rail op-amps for the pre-amp.

I use PAM8403 AMPs to power my Celestion DL6's and PSB Alpha Mini Monitor Speakers, both 8 ohm. I added Bluetooth modules, Good sound plenty of volume and surprisingly Bass. I have also run the 8403s on 16 ohms with no problems I have not been able to heat the amp up at all. The one on the DL6s runs 24/7 but at low volume in the bed room. I like these amps you can get a quad channel board using 2 8403s and Bluetooth modules with them built in. Many of the boards with them are smaller than the one in the video.

I have an ak2515 spectrum analyzer im using in a gift for a friend and I wanted to connect a basic 3.5mm camera mic into it but then learned the difference between mic inputs and aux inputs. My question is if I could use one of these tiny amps as a preamp for the signal? The ak2515 already has 5 volts available onboard. Not trying to power speakers, just make an aux in signal. If there is another method I could use I'm all ears. Just want adjustable gain for the mic to adjust the sensitivity for the spectrum analyzer.

@sputech99 the -ve speaker terminals connect to separate pins on the PAM8403. I assume its driving the outputs in bridge mode to increase the voltage swing across the speakers. So not really suitable for headphones sharing a common ground wire. However the following stack exchange answer gives a possible approach to connecting headphones using capacitative coupling, but I have not tried it myself: electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/149687/cost-effective-solution-to-using-pam8403-as-a-headphone-amp

I also powered it with a 5v cell phone powerbank and after some minutes it started being hot as hell, nearly burning out. Eventually, it got damaged and I could barelly rise the volume. Anything louder than 20% of the original amplification power made the module stop the signal and the speakers cracking. I took another module and i used a 5v cellphone charger instead. It happened the same. temperatures got so high that the module end up damaged. I really don`t know if they have to be feeded with a lower voltage or maybe i got fautly modules...

My question is about the speakers I want to use: Peiying PY-1010C 4" 60W - 100-20KHz. Eficiency: 88dB/W/m. Like I know every speraker have Maximal (60W in my case) and Musical (unknown) output. if the speakers are 15w like yours and they aren't 3w which the pam 8403 amplifier need. Are there any incidence at battery and amplifier or speaker?
@DonatoGreco
@DonatoGreco 7 жыл бұрын
here we have a 15W capable speakers, so if you send them just 3W they are ok dealing with this power, no effect on the battery consumption. What sets the battery consumption is the potentiometer regulated amplified power. I mean you get close to 3 times the battery life (at the same given battery charge level) if you output 1W instead of 3W out of the speakers.

People who are dealing with any audio amplifier that doesn't have an internal power supply to boost the voltage need to learn and remember the following: Your output peak voltage can never be more than your input voltage for a full bridge or half the input voltage for a half bridge. To go from peak voltage to RMS of sine wave AC you multiply by .707 So in theory the output can't be more than .707x the input, in reality it will be even less due to drop within the amplifier itself. In this case the power FETs in the chip have .32 ohms resistance. This adds to the load impedance. 5v X .707 = 3.5v Power into a load is voltage squared divided by impedance. 3.5 X 3.5 is 12.25. 12.25 divided by 4.32 ohms is 2.84 watts, pretty close to the datasheet 1% value. 12.25 divided by 8.32 ohms is 1.47 watts which again matches. This is why pretty much every car head unit ever made with a full bridge floating ground speaker output is advertised as 20-25 watts RMS per channel. 14.4 X .707 = 10.18v, squared is 103.63, divided by 4 is 25.9 watts. Also the PAM8610 version. 12 X .707 = 8.484v, squared is 71.98, divided by 4.4 (4 ohms speaker .4 ohms FETs) is 16.36 watts.

***** I haven't noticed it getting hot at higher volumes. It's class-D operation should ensure it runs quite cool. A heat sink would probably work, but since the chip is in a small SOIC 16-pin package, there's not much surface area for the heatsink to mount on to.

hi luc! i've been reading that it is better to have the amplifier's wattage bigger than the speakers, why do you use a 15w speaker in this case? i've bought a speaker from here: au.element14.com/pro-signal/abs-216-rc/loudspeaker-miniature/dp/1504105 and have been experiencing clipping at 5v/500ma, and less clipping at 5v/1a. can you explain/teach me why this isnt a good setup compared to a higher wattage speaker?
@LucSmall
@LucSmall 8 жыл бұрын
+Shang Lin Chua I agree with what you have been reading. In general it is better to have an amplifier rated at a higher wattage than the speakers. The reason is that the amplifier will never be driven to the point of clipping, so the speakers will always be driven with a clean signal. It's clipping that's the enemy of speakers. Of course, if you push it too far and try to put 100 watts RMS into a speaker rated for 10 watts RMS, the speaker will likely burn out, clipping or no clipping! In my case, where I have a low power amplifier driving speakers rated for much more, I just take care to ensure that the amplifier goes nowhere near clipping. I find that I get ample volume while keeping the distortion low. If I really wanted to crank up the volume I'd use my bigger amp hooked up to my bigger speakers. I suspect that you get less clipped with the 1 amp power supply because the higher rated power supply can supply more energy during the transients. The amplifier can only work within the limits of the power supply. The 500mA 5V power supply can at most (theoretically, 100% efficiency) deliver 2.5 watts to the speakers via the amplifier. The 1A 5V power supply, meanwhile, can theoretically deliver 5 watts. So the amplifier can deliver more power to the speakers before exceeding the limits of the power supply and starting to clip.
@sunnychua22
@sunnychua22 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the response! I'm getting a little bit of progress, but maybe I just chose the wrong speakers for the wrong job. I changed it with 50mm round speakers 1w from taydaelectronics and have been getting better sound! But better sound with the tda2822m, and ok sound (can be better) with the LM 386. So if I use 1A 5v power supply, 5W is greater than 1W (speaker) is that right?
@sumdude4
@sumdude4 9 жыл бұрын
Think some 10watt 16ohm speakers would work alright with these amps?
@MichaelBeeny
@MichaelBeeny 8 жыл бұрын
+sumdude4 I doubt you will get 3 watts into 16 ohms. More like 1 watt!! or even less. You will need to use 4 ohm speakers to get the full 3 watts. Note with 3 watts output you will be into clipping. It's really a 2.5 watt amplifier with less than 1 % distortion. Still amazing value for money.
@LucSmall
@LucSmall 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Beeny +sumdude4 Yes - at 16 ohms the output power would be quite reduced. The PAM8403 datasheet (page 4) says you can expect 3.2W into a 4 ohm load at 10% THD (i.e. nasty levels of distortion!) with a 5V power supply. It drops to 1.8W for an 8 ohm load, 10% THD, 5V supply. So at 16 ohms you can expect less power output again! The 2x10W PAM8610 might be worth exploring. Modules using it are only a little more expensive, e.g.: www.aliexpress.com/item/Hot-Sale-12V-Mini-Hi-Fi-PAM8610-Audio-Stereo-Amplifier-Board-2X10W-Dual-Channel-D-Class/32302322145.html These run off 12V. Again the datasheet doesn't specify the power output for a 16ohm load. I have one of these on order - look forward to trying it out when it arrives.

Hi bro, As in any small cheap amplifier kit, there's always improvements to do, like those PAM8403 modules. They follow the minimum design and install the minimum external components around, to keep prices low. Sometimes, there is important points missed. First, any amplifier needs stability. When bass kicks out, voltage will drop. Add at least, electrolytic 220uF to 470uF, capacitor (Tantalum is better!) between Vcc and GND lines. Add also 100nf in parallel. Also, please, as general rule: always use decent wires. Avoid those microscopic hair-type wires, horrible! (No need for "Audio-fool" gold cable as well) Make your 5v input the most robust as well. So, less resistivity on the path, better the result will be. Same thing applies between Speakers output pads and speakers. And, very critical for this device: the Analolg Bypass Capacitor. A 1uF electrolytic capacitor MUST be used between pin 8 and GND. Better to have a small look at the Datasheet :) www.openhacks.com/uploadsproductos/pam8403.pdf
@MichaelBeeny
@MichaelBeeny 8 жыл бұрын
You cannot expect it to go very loud on an 8 ohm speaker in real terms you will only get just over 1 watt of clean sound before you hit clipping. In fact only 2 clean watts is available into 4 ohms. At 3 watts you will have 10% distortion which is mostly clipping artifacts. After all it works in just 5 volts, it's not a PA amplifier.

Just ran some tests on it myself and found that normal usb supply isn't enough current to drive the system. I have since hooked it through the 5v line from a pc psu and got far better results. Yes, the spec is 4 ohm but I run 8 ohm 8" Bookshelf speakers on them with no problem. They would be louder at 4 ohms.

It does, however it will not put out as much force. Best is to stick to the 5 Volts it needs using two 3.7 Volt cells and use a cheap voltage controller board to level it to 5 Volts.

You don't need to keep moving things about in your hands, better to put them down on the desk. And be a little zoomed out. The first 3 minutes were painful to watch, waving it all about.
