Lucy Liu is such kind of woman, where it’s really hard for me to focus on the actual content of the rest of the video. It doesn’t even matter much that we both have a loving connection to China. Sometimes it’s just like you meet a person and she just blows you away. Meeting her is definitely on my bucket list.

Mandarin is her first language, she didn't start to learn English until she was 7-8. She spoke a few Mandarin sentences while on Letterman when he brought up the subject.

People seem to lack the decency to at least google / wiki before they lashed out at others... Mandarin = Putonghua. Mandarin (官話) is literally the official language. Putonghua is the lingua franca that everyone speaks in the country. If it's not Mandarin, then what can it be? Putonghua is not based on Beijing accent (just ask any Beijing native). The standard version PRC teaches is closer to those spoken in China's Northeast. While Taiwan's standard version is closer to Zhejiang's accent.

@AppleMacGeek thanks for the rejoinder. Nowhere in my comments did I say Cantonese is not based on the standard Chinese ideograms. I knew that and that's why I questioned whether Cantonese writing is sufficiently distinct from standard Chinese writing to considered a separate language. If Cantonese writing were entirely different from standard Chinese then surely it would qualify as a language beyond doubt. It isn't, and that's why there's even a debate about it.

@airhealth: There are major errors in your statements about Chinese. Cantonese writing *IS* standard Chinese ideograms, only pronounced differently. The ideograms mean the same thing regardless of dialect spoken so people who speak different dialects can actually communicate if they are literate. They are only a handful of ideograms specific to Cantonese & Hokkien which don't exist in Mandarin, e.g., the ideogram for "don't have"--it's two ideograms in Mandarin but one in the other 2.

People should know that you might have Mandarin, Cantonese, Haka, or whatever, but the WRITTEN LANGUAGE IS THE SAME!!! so its just that everyone pronounces the worlds a little different. So it is not the same as differences in European languages with different alphabets etc.

honestly, i don't even like lucy liu or watch her movies for that matter so i can't really be bias in her favor. i'm just giving her the benefit of the doubt because i don't know her. but everyone has their own opinion and is free to express it. so i have no problem with you expressing what you think.

I am satisfied to agree to disagree. Maybe having lived in HK, Taiwan and parts of the Mainland have influenced my views some what, but my opinion on the nature and differences of these languages are as valid as yours and anyone else's. Yeah, I know there are more dialects within China that most people would be aware of, and their numbers make the definitions of "language" and "dialects" ambiguous. Thank you for not being directly abrasive and confrontational though.

Oh, you're from Indonesia, that would explain the mild confusion. No worries, the differences between Mandarin and Putonghua is political more than anything. Politically, there's no Mandarin in Mainland China, there's only Putonghua and then all the different regional/provincial/ethnic dialects. Frankly, it confuses the hell out of me! I speak mostly Cantonese, since I live in HK, and a lot of times people in Mainland China won't understand me if I speak Cantonese :P Nice to meet you too :)

Chinese can be classified as a language simply because it includes our many dialects, of which there are seven major ones. I can assure you that the people from Northern China will have no idea what those coming from Southern China are saying, it's all too different. Cantonese can be counted as a language in itself, it's the language used in Hong Kong, Putongua is the one used in the Mainland and Mandarin the one used in Taiwan. Blame orientalism for the generalization.

Certain people are often questioned about "where they are from." In most cases, being resentful about it won't reflect well.

Maybe it's an American thing and I probably misunderstand you, but why would anyone want to "run away from their background"? And what do you mean by never allowed to do so? Personally I love when people are curious and ask about my background.
@valuecalc
@valuecalc 8 жыл бұрын
D'Ascoyne, here's an example of running away from one's background: Let's say that a Cambodian woman rejects all the advances of men from her country. She heads to the U.S. and dates a few black men, but she's happier with white boys. She then takes no interest in anything that is culturally related to her country of origin. Not allowed? Here's what I mean: The same Cambodian woman is asked many questions by both American blacks and American whites about her experiences "back home." Why? Well, when they see her, it's easy to see that she's of another origin than them.

Before the 1997 Handover of Hong Kong back to Mainland China, the language that you learned (Mandarin/Putonghua, just not Cantonese) was called Mandarin. After the Handover, it's officially referred to as Putonghua. Pu-tong can mean both "ordinary" and "common", the latter is really what it means. It was another way to unify China under the communist regime. So Mandarin is the language in Taiwan, Putonghua the one in Mainland China. Yes they sound the same, but they're not considered the same :)

I feel that there are enough factors involved that I personally consider Putonghua and Mandarin different. I'm not even sure those who speak Mandarin would like their language to be regarded the same as Putonghua, and visa versa. I may be wrong. I respect that you and everyone else are entitled to your interpretations, but in saying that, I also feel that I'm entitled to mine. "Min Nan Yu" ("Southern Min Dialect") refers to a dialect of Chinese spoken in and around Fujian. Hope that helps : )
@airhealth
@airhealth 14 жыл бұрын
Language can mean dialects when used loosely. When compared with dialect, the main difference is that language is supported by its own system of writing, while dialect isn't. I am really not sure if Cantonese writing is sufficiently distinct from standard Chinese writing to warrant the label 'language'. I know Taiwanese attempts failed miserably though Given HK's closer proximity to China, smaller population base, and greater English fluency, I can't see how Cantonese writing can have a future.
@Rydaine
@Rydaine 16 жыл бұрын
I was just explaining, and I'm sure you're aware that text isn't the best way to convey tone. I still stand by the idea that it's two different languages due to political correctness if nothing else. Out of curiosity, have you ever visited China and her S.A.R.'s?

Actually Putonghua is Mandarin haha There are actually different dialects in minanyu, because people from taiwan speak it, but it is different than the ones spoken in fujian, but they're both considered minnayu
@Rydaine
@Rydaine 16 жыл бұрын
Well, actually, seeing as how you're from China, I expected you to understand the minor difference. I am well aware that Putonghua (普通話, yes? I know) and Mandarin as languages sound extremely similar. Letting dialect differences slide. However, I was under the impessions that Mandarin is more commonly associated as the language spoken in Taiwan while Putonghua is more commonly associated at the language spoken in Mainland China. Anyway, thank you for the enlightenment mate.

Yes Your Majesty. I'm not questioning your validity, seems like you need to chill now. I propose to agree to disagree, I'm not going to agree that they're the same thing, despite sounding very much alike, and you are clearly going to maintain that they're the same thing. I'm open to the idea that someone may have a different perspective than mine, but I'm not beyond stating my opinion. Fair?

So really, the political correctness factored in when the 1997 Handover took place. Especially since Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, whilst part of China, is mostly considered Special Administrative Regions in their own right, with government systems for each that isn't the same as the one in China that's administrated from Beijing. Yeah, I'm from HK, but I lived in Taiwan when I was really young, and I grew up in Sydney, Aus. I'm back in HK now, but I go back to Mainland China often :)

Furhter more, those who use the term "self hating white wannbe" might want to consider the idea that one doesn't necessarily have to identify themself with any one single culture. And who are you to say that? I'm from HK and I grew up in Australia, while the way I am is definitely somewhat westernized doesn't mean my cultural heritage means nothing to me. Which is, I believe, the case with many people who grew up or were exposed to a culture not their own.
