That fugue on the Magnificat needs to be heard a lot more! The way JSB waits all that time to bring in the pedal (on a longish plenum registration!). What that does for me is: Let Mary take her full moment, as she must have done for the 3rd evangilist Luke. Remember he was a physician who gives us these almost clinical accounts of--for example--the nativity of Jesus. Clinical in their detail of every necessary+possible detail. Also in Luke's strict avoidance of interpolating any of his own subjective feelings, judgments or opinions. Such finely crafted fugue that plays by the rules of structure and conterpoint is none the less infused with emotional content, which could only have their origin in the affect of the composer who had the highest levels of fluency in harmony and voice leading so as to manifest and communicate any nuance of our emotional makeup. With that background, to the point. When the cantus does come in on the bass-bsss of the pedal, it is the more powerful for the delayed gratification. So that at least I received that extraordinary, highly prophetic passage of scripture with authority. But the authority of a woman who rarely had that kind of platform. THAT, and an excellent musician in the 2200's Century who serves less himself and for that more faithfully Bach, and such canonical texts. Such = content you can't make up. Vielen, vielen Dank für diese Hochleistung!
