Ludi, just a clarification about Verona. It was Cangrande I della Scala who expanded the power of Verona. He conquered Treviso and Vicenza, and finally conquered the rival of the Veronese, Padua. His power not only made him the leader of the Ghibellines and the right hand man of the emperor in Northern Italy, but he was also the patron of Dante Alighieri. His descendants would be the ones to destroy his work.

Regarding Genoa and Venice, the serie of wars they fought was ultimatelly won by the Genoese, not the Venicians. Both republics accumulated huge debts during the war and the peace of Turin in 1381 resulted in Cyprus being handed over to Genoa (or rather, Venice renouncing their claims on the island in favour of Genoa) , and a series of islands in Asia Minor and the Dodecanese being handed over to Genoa. Also, Venician merchants were barred from trading in the black sea. Moreover, Venice lost nearly all of its territory on the Italian mainland, surrendering Conegliano and Treviso to Austria, and was forced to pay tribute to the Hungarians. Ultimatelly, the peace sanctioned the monopoly of Genoese trade in the Black Sea, which remained so until after the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. The Venetians largely abandoned trade with Cyprus, and the hegemony of the Genoese over the island continued until their defeat and expulsion by the King of Cyprus in 1464. This peace and its aftermath marked a low point in Venice's medieval history, but its neighbours' problems enabled the republic to make a rapid and sustained recovery which led to the progressive overturning of the settlement established at Turin. The lord of Padua acquired Treviso from Austria in 1382, but less than a decade later Venice was able to recover it, as Padua came under heavy attack from Milan. Hungary continued to receive the Venetian tribute only until 1397

Italian here. Not sure how people from Latium (the region of Rome) would be happy to see that they are depicted as Umbrians from a cultural point of view. That’s the only part on whose accuracy I’m not completely sure. People from Umbria don’t get mad at me but I would rather replace Umbrian with Lazian and extend Tuscan a bit to the South and to the East. As regards rice in Northern Italy instead, it’s pretty accurate, since the provinces in Eastern Piedmont and Western Lombardy (that’s actually where I am fron) still produce rice today and rice plays a major role in local diet and typical dishes as well.

7:10 is highly debatable, you should have pushed the subject more cause is very interesting. The war was mostly naval and culminated after almost 2 centuries of rivalry. The genoese navy went undefeated for the most part and heavily retaliated on the venetians for any losses. The venetians were unable to make any sortee into the Tirrenean see, despite bigger numbers in terms of navy, the genoese decided to launch an invasion of venice proper and started doing so by razing and occupying venetian holds in the Adriatic Sea, venetians were powerless and mustered a big fleet to face the genoese approaching venice itself, they got destroyed and lost most of their navy, either captured or destroyed by the genoese, Genoa suffered light casualties. In the meantime in the city of Genoa itself noble families, which were always rivals to each other, started fighting over spoils of war, trade hotspots and whatever, it litterally came down to in-street fighting beetween families, support for the war effort was barely none, "La Superba" , the sin of pride in the end doomed the prideful city. The genoese navy landed in venetian mainland and wrecked havoc, venetian army was once again defeated, but still lack of support from the homeland was getting desperate for the genoese sailors and soldiers. Venice saw right through that and organized once again their fleet to attack the genoese one, now stuck in Chioggia(a town south of Venice), which would give the name to the war "Guerra di Chioggia". Once again the venetian navy was defeated tho, the genoese managed to repel the encirclement attempt and sunk many venetian ships. Then both parties came to peace, venice was unable to defeat Genoa on the sea and had a standing genoese army in the mainland, Genoa didnt have the internal unity to pursue the war anymore, and they convened a peace in Milan mediated by the Duke if i remember correctly. Genoa won every most battles but didnt win the war, venice didnt win either but they came out on top cause this conflict would prompt them to expand into the mainland. Genoa would go on a period of decadence and would never go back to being a naval and trade power of that level, facing a new "renaissance" in the 1500s with their banking. This war happened a bit later than the startdate, at which time Genoa was one of the biggest cities in europe, before the black plague
@blackpaint90935 ай бұрын
Just realized you might be talking about the war of the straits. Point still stands, an alliance of Venice and Aragon(growing influenxe in western mediterranean) was militarily defeated by the genoese. My personal and extremely niche gripe with the map is regarding the kingdom of Naples: It was (formally, due to the Normans) a vassal of the papal states. It didn't act like one but they still had obligations to them (mainly military, and they also paid a tribute called "Chinea" to them. For reference: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinea ). That resulted in the city of Benevento as well as Pontecorvo being enclaves of the papal states INSIDE the kingdom of Naples (information available in both cities' Wikipedia articles: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontecorvo ; en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benevento ) Other than that I hope the Duchy of Sora will get an event chain to gain autonomy and become a vassal under the kingdom of Naples (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchy_of_Sora) Likewise the principality of Taranto should be modelled as a feudal state of Naples, not an integral part of it (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Taranto)

That lead to an important revolt (La rivolta dei Ciompi 1378) where worker of the Arti want to have an Arte of workers and be part of the governance of the city, that revolt put a stop to the production of cloth and other important export. That was very entrenced with black death cause the number of workers go down and specialized workers can have more power after the death of half of the popolation. Then after Cosimo the First who was still a Gonfaloniere della repubblica start the real Signoria but it was in middle of 15 century.

I know this is a very early version of the game, but I hope that they add 3D elements to the map because it’s looking quite 2D at the moment

I bet that cultures will be dynamic in EU5, given that Austrian certainly should be a culture by the end date.

2 small fun facts: That Rice provinces in northern Italy are the biggest Rice producing areas of europe and in fact Italy is the biggest Rice exporter of the continent. That Lead province on the Tuscan cast seems to be near where "Piombino" a Port town is located. "Piombino" literally means "Little Lead" (Piombo being the italian word for Lead). Then 1 small criticism, the Trentino area being full German with some ladin minorities is not accurate at all. Welschtirol should be majority Romance speaking (a gradient between Lombard and Venetian, cause that's what the Trento dialect is like) while Bozen/Bolzano should be Majority Ladin cause german settlers migrated e masse there only in the 15th century. So the biggest improvement they could make whould be to move up the Language border between Germans and Italians at least North of Bolzano(probably should be set near the Brenner pass as the northern Val Venosta was majority romansh)

Oui je suis d'accord pour ton argument sur Venice. Peut être en rajoutant des modificateurs supplémentaires provinciales spéciales ?

17:18 As an Italian, it does sound very similar, not exactly the same so it's maybe more similar to Romanian, but still clearly similar.
