I bought a Ludwig Venus Carl Palmer Signature snare drum at an ELP Legacy concert a few years ago. At the band 'meet and greet' after the show Carl Palmer himself signed the batter head and gave me some tuning tips: replace the OEM batter head with a Remo coated Emperor and the OEM snare attachment strings with tape. I generally prefer deeper depth snare drums but gotta tell ya that little drum rocks! Very wide tuning range and very sensitive.

Tape?? That’s a new one… are you sure he didn’t mean the sort of straps you get with some snares? And why tape if that’s what he meant?
@thomasmoje5926
@thomasmoje5926 6 ай бұрын
@@Benny_Pill He said 'tape'. I knew what he meant. I refer to them as 'tape' too be it the plastic or woven fabric type. Tomatoes, tomahtoes.

@@thomasmoje5926 ok, did he explain why? Does it make a difference in the sound?
@thomasmoje5926

@@Benny_Pill He just said the 'tape' (straps) snare wire attachment is better than the string attachments that come with the drum. The drum sounded great 'out of the box' but I replaced the OEM snare attachment cords with straps. I prefer strap-type snare attachment specifically the woven fabric snare attachment straps. They are thin and flexible and allow for the snare wire metal butt ends to lay flat against the head..sometimes cord attachment strings make a bit of space under the snare wire butt plates due to the thickness of the cord strings. I've found that fabric strap snare attachment reduces 'sympathetic/extraneous' snare buzzing, but that's just my opinion.

From what I can tell, shell diameter and batter head determine how low a drum can be tuned more so than shell depth, while shell depth is a factor in how fast the snare wires respond.

Loved that cowbell groove at the end ! I once tried the throw off on this drum, and it seemed like it was difficult to disengage and engage the snares. It looked a little cheap to me, seeing as its a signature model. It does sound great at all tunings for such a shallow drum. On a side note, is that really an 18x14 kick?
@2112percussion_
@2112percussion_ 10 ай бұрын
Throwoffs on super shallow snares can be less snazzy than, say, a Trick, but this is a pretty inexpensive drum, and honestly the throwoff works just fine, so it's cool with me. And yes, that is indeed an 18! There's something about Gretsch kicks; they always seem to sound bigger than they actually are!

Could you make a video about gretsch brooklyn chrome over steel snare? I think it's ridiculoysly underrated. 2mm thick steel shell with the same high-end hardware you find on gretsch's usa custom snares (except the snap in drum key holder) and for about 500€ in europe.

Low tuning a piccolo is so odd. Has a fat attack, but dry. Almost like a gate.
@2112percussion_
@2112percussion_ 10 ай бұрын
That's something I've noticed will happen to some (not all) drums when you tighten the snares just so. Try it - take a Ludwig or a Tama or a Pearl, tune the top head low (leave the bottom tight), then tighten the snares starting with them super loose. It'll go from rattly, to perfect, to choked, to gated, and back to choked, where it'll stay. That weird magic spot between the choked regions is how I get that gated sound. Big sploot.

That’s the sound of the 90s, man…STP, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against The Machine, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, the list goes on…all those records had fat piccolo sounds of some sort. Emphasizes everything you want sitting with the band and cuts out everything you don’t…especially when processed with parallel compression and/or a good room sound.
