How to fix problems like this, engineer a solution. Therefore, the imperium's greatest sin is stifling progress and development. IDK. I worked in one of the oldest nuclear plants in the US. It felt like you were moving around a cramped submarine. That's because it was built by the Navy using what they had learned from the nuclear Navy. Hence the crawl spaces and hatches. I was there to do a refuel of one of their 2 units, not as a operator under normal operating conditions. During a refuel, every 18 months, per unit, it takes over 1000 contractors converging on a plant from all over the US, 6 weeks to refuel and get maintenance done in places normally NO ONE can go . And this is happening in every nuke plant across the world, whether they have 2, 6, or 12 units. Inside each unit there is a place that is closed and locked during the 18 months of normal operation, called "confinement". This is where most of the work of a refuel will happen, other than work on the steam side which is pretty normal "boiler" type of work. In confinement areas are designated "high radiation" and "Locked High Radiation". This is where the glowing purple/blue water is. The water shields the radiation. If the water wasn't there it would be almost instant death. For this plant, at least around 2007, this plant in Michigan was ranked the worst nuke plants in the US...and I learned why. One task that stands out in my mind but was typical. Something I have done thousands of times in all kinds of chemical plants, refineries, the oil field, and even a Bush's Baked Beans in Tenn, and an ice cream plant in Bakersfield. All I had to do was come up through a hatch in the floor(submarine), that just barely fit my shoulders, then cross a room, maybe 30 feet, to a pneumatic valve, then radio the control room and have them stroke it (yes, that stopped being funny 30 years ago) I would observe the action, record it's data plate, adjust it if necessary, and return the way I had come. 10 minutes in an ice cream plant, I figured a least an hour in this tangled mess and with other...obstacles. It took over 36 hours. 3 shifts. Most of that is paperwork just to start the job over with a new person, LOL insane! The issue was, the heat exchanger taking up one entire wall that I would be crossing in front of to get to the valve was the single hottest, most radioactively HOT, piece of equipment, in the entire plant. Standing in it's presence for more than 5 or 10 minutes would have been suicide and in this room it was IMPOSSABLE to be more than 7 or 8 foot away from it. For weeks leading up to this, as soon as confinement had been opened open, they said, they started constructing a wall remotely, out of lead bricks. Same size and shape of house bricks but probably 20 pounds each. But the wall was only a few courses high...wobbly, and not tight. I was looking at the scene by CCTV from the wall building robot. It looked homemade or stolen from the bombsquad of the 1980s. I would have to low crawl and stay in the "shade" of that way too short and shitty wall, with death looming just on the other side! WTF? I was like "are we all out of freakin bricks? What happens if my butt pops up out of the shade and the 20 very serious men giving me the briefing for this...OPERATION, all turned from the CCTV at once and said, "don't do that". Ok wait a minute, lets talk about this. Well to cut this short, a little, it happened just like they had it set up, don't know WHY the wall couldn't be taller...or permeant! Building this wall every 18 months since the 50s is more nuts than realizing they didn't have robots and probably didn't bother with the wall. Just a diet of more red meat and a few extra Pal Malls and it'll be fine sport! I know my dosimeter, a pin on pager type thing that measures in real time the radiation dose you are receiving, and for the day. It vibrates once every 5 minutes to let you know its on and faster in higher rad. The most I has seen was a buzz every 60 or 30 seconds. In that room it was trying very hard to jump off my collar and get the hell out. In there it vibrated continuously, lead blocks be damned. Not long after the refuel I did, the nuke police(NRC) came in, shut them down, and made them just pretend to run a nuke plant for 2 years before they would allow them to crack anymore atoms. It wasn't bad management though it was just a really old plant, designed poorly, and unable to upgrade due to the nuclear bureaucracy. So there! We all made it through the story, and I'm still alive, for the most part.

Luetin does play into the whole narrative that Games Workshop are insanely trying to push these days that the Imperium are the real bad guys when he should know better. The complaining about the lack of tolerance and progressive values in the Imperium is ridiculous considering the situation humanity faces. They are surrounded by different alien species who all want to wipe out every last human and someone simply thinking the wrong things can literally open up a portal to hell out of which demons will flood to devourer the entire world. So the fact he makes out as if these factors are secondary to the Imperium just being mean for the sake of it is nonsense.
@TheExterminatorGuy2 жыл бұрын
@@EvidensInsania it’s not that the imperium is mean for the sake of it; it’s that complete authoritarianism isn’t an effective governing strategy. It just isn’t. And a large part of the books and the stories; hell the whole point of the satire of the Imperium of Man is that they *could* be so much more but they cling to authoritarianism, fanaticism, needlessly brutal hierarchy in the name of ideological purity, so on. To say it’s justified because there’s a big threat is to fall not just for the propaganda of the imperium in universe, but for the real world propaganda of oligarchs, dictators, and authoritarians everywhere. That’s why so many get uncomfortable when people see the imperium as the ‘good guy’. And justify its horrible actions with the same vague language of external threat authoritarians have for decades.
@TheExterminatorGuy2 жыл бұрын
@@EvidensInsania obviously due to demons a certain amount of centralization needs to occur simply to keep back demon invasions. But the imperium goes far, far beyond that. And at least in reference to real life; demons aren’t real.
@EvidensInsania2 жыл бұрын
@@TheExterminatorGuy You clearly don't understand the Imperium since It is not authoritarian. The only thing the Imperium cares about is that each system pays their tithes for the war effort and worships the Emperor. Beyond that they don't care about how each system governs itself so across the Imperium you get all manner of different local governments, some good and some tyrannical and corrupt. But it's the planetary governors who are to blame for this, not the Imperium. Also why on Earth are you saying that demons not existing in real life as a critique of the enforced Emperor worship? This sort of deep dive into the 40K universe makes me think that a 40K movie could really have only been made in the 80's. The 80's was a crazy time when filmographers were unafraid to try concepts like a dystopian society where we had no hope for the future, and would take wild and crazy dares to create their vision, even if the special effects or production design weren't up to the challenge. I don't think a modern movie studio would have the balls to make a 40K movie that properly showed how insane and dire and hopeless the Empire of Man really is.
@AbsolXGuardian2 жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely. Modern executives would butcher it into a scifi action film about space marines fighting a faction of xenos (but with the Imperium only fighting for its survival and not the genocide of that species in turn). Said enemy faction would be presented in the least interesting way, and in the end what we'd get would be in-universe Imperium propaganda.

Some Jobs come to my mind (sorry if they where mentioned already!) 1. Loading-Canonier-Slave: basically the guys loading cannons on the space ships. They load the gigantic cannons without even seeing the enemy, or knowing whats going on. They are whipped to work harder/faster and go deaf from the noise, blind from the powder smoke and get internal wounds from the blast wave. They only make it a few rounds before the next batch has to take over in order to retain firing speed, as the old slaves slowly bleed to death from internal wounds. 2. Adeptus Ministorum Cleaning Crew: baiscally the guys that have to clean up whats left after the space marines have conquered an objective. Like in the game viscera cleanup crew, they have to clean up the blood and splattered organs, and have to deal with the occasionally monster/wounded left alive. ;-)
@minhucovu63212 жыл бұрын
The first one I always feel a bit unusually stupid? Basically you have to keep thousands of people aboard alive whose only job is pulling shells, and they are not even remotely efficient at the job as they die by the hundreds/thousands every battle? If then ran out of people mid-battle then they couldn't load the cannons anymore? It is just incredibly illogical just for the sake of being grimdark. I know 40k is suppose to be illogical and grimdark, but that is just stupid, when they could simply use some kind of automated crane, hydraulic or rail transport system. But maybe the ridiculousness is the point.

@Theoxuesu2 жыл бұрын
@@minhucovu6321 I think while it's entirely possible for things like cranes, hydraulic systems, or as you say even rail transport to be available and more efficient than standard human workers I think it comes down to the fact that the Imperium has to spend resources on these things when it can just use the masses of humanity to do it for no resource cost save the death of the worker who will extremely likely just be replaced with the next unfortunate victim. Or you could look at it as a way of "cutting corners" on producing warships which are in high demand all around the Imperium. Just my 2 cents

The mention of the loading of the macro cannons makes Warhammer 40k a similar kind of sci-fi to steampunk. It’s a form of retro-futurism, the concept of highly advanced technology and futuristic capabilities but built and performed in an archaic and primitive way. Much like a steampunk robot being built out of wood and powered by clockwork, the Emperor’s ships are capable of humanity’s dream of traveling through space but are built like gothic cathedrals, can support a planets worth of life but run like medieval England and have advanced weaponry capable of operating in space but are loaded like an 18th century sail ship. It’s a form of sci-fi I love as it follows an aesthetic that’s more beautiful while setting a universe that’s mysterious and fascinating. It’s constantly makes you wonder what happened. We achieved our greatest goals of traveling space, discovering different planets and being able to inhabit them and find life outside of our own solar system but it’s all done under a violent, religious dictatorship onboard ships that seem to be as reliant on the humans to stay operational as the humans are on them to stay alive. The life we so long to discover is hostile and a constant threat. It’s ying and yang. The pinnacle of human achievement in the most primitive way possible.

It's kind of funny that, if the Imperium has millions of worlds with human habitation, and because they don't dictate what form of government must exist on planets, there must be thousands and thousands of worlds with democratic governments, decent standards of living, functioning economic systems, etc. I know we fans don't talk about them, but it's interesting to think that they certainly exist alongside the absolute horror of many other worlds of the galaxy, so there is a place for most fan head-cannon somewhere.
@crazymanmot2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but they do dictate the imperial tithe. So even among the places of good standards of living that is probably paid off by them either straight up being heretic traitors that lie in their reports to keep their tithe low or having a slave class of persons worked to death to meet it while others slack off.

@@crazymanmot Realistically most of the things the imperium does only serve to massively reduce productivity and maximize human suffering. Too many shitty writers have been involved in 40k over the years so it can't be taken too seriously.
@Eloquence002 жыл бұрын
@@noosa187 I feel like the reduced productivity and maximized suffering was largely the point. Yes, some of the writing is overly grimdark for the sake of being grimdark edgy. But in a lot of cases the argument could be made that the in-universe tipping point has been reached and the continuous ridiculous failures aren't the cause of their problems but the symptoms. As such, yes, a lot of what the Imperium does is basically pointless; but that pointlessness is the point of writing it in. It serves to show how dire the situation is. The Imperium is on it's last legs, literally held together by scrap, chems, and an absolute faith in a barely living corpse is the only thing that allows them to barely traverse through their oversized empire. They openly scorn technology, only tolerating the Adeptus Mechanicus because they have to. They don't educate anyone because doing so would be both costly and inevitably lead to the kind of intellectual renaissance that causes revolt. The enemies of mankind are enclosing on the Imperium from all sides with new ones coming every day, and the Imperium would rather make enemies with everyone than admit that an alien would make a viable ally. The reduction in productivity is the inevitable result of forsaking education and technological progress in favor of religious zealotry and faith. The maximization of human suffering is intentional - as mentioned in this video - meant to punish those who aren't already a direct part of the system for their "sin" of ignorance. Meant to cleanse their sins of uselessness by making them useful, even if that use is limited and preventable. The imperium can't sustain itself any longer. The emperor is about to die with nobody who can take up his mantle, all because the tech-priests can't fix the throne he has been sitting on for 10k years because the Imperium scorns progress and technology. The million-world empire will be unable to rally any of its resources once that happens. All the effort to maintain order, the atrocities committed to raise their armies, the sacrifices made to defy chaos - none of it will matter. All because over the course of 10k years nobody has even attempted to find a workaround for feeding a vegetable 1000 people a day to keep their transit system functional.

The impression I get, from the various books, is that most hive cities have some form of rebellion going on somewhere within them. Plus sections of the underhive are usually, literal, war zones most places you look. But with the sheer scale of it... even law enforcement might be unaware of it if it's happening far enough away from their jurisdiction. Why don't people rebel? They do. Regularly. One of the things that makes WH40K so unrealistic for me is the simple logistical problem of its utilization of people. It's this exploration of a worst possible future where the darkest and most disturbing parts of human nature reign supreme and in realizing that it makes every single facet of life as absurdly horrible as possible. Forget stagnation or regression, I can't believe that it wouldn't just collapse in a couple centuries, if not decades, due to rapid population decline. It has this mentality that it doesn't matter how many people die doing literally anything because they seemingly have an infinite supply of living bodies, all the while I'm thinking about the amount of time and energy needed to make even one person and how frankly unlikely it is that this kind of environment is going to create as many people as it consumes. Even a million planets, each with populations in the trillions, isn't going to be able to sustain itself with things like a high average infant mortality rate (additionally hindered by the increase of defects due to things like chemical poisoning) and almost every job having such ridiculously low life expectancies. Where are these people coming from? None of these planets seem to have environments that would encourage population growth. Even using widespread cloning wouldn't be enough to meet the demands. It's like making a story about a society that subsists solely by cannibalizing their dead, the amount of food you are going to get from one corpse is not equivalent to the amount of food it takes to make that corpse. This is simple maths. This isn't a criticism, really. It's just a reason why I can't take this setting seriously. It'll only every be an overly exaggerated satire for me. It is interesting, definitely. Even if I find much of the actual stories and writing to be rather lackluster, just on the concepts and setting alone it invites creative participation almost as well as other fantasy settings like D&D, but explaining the intricacies of its operation seems to me like a sisyphean task akin to explaining magic as if it really existed as a scientifically accurate system.

I would like to propose one worst jobs, or more accurately, duties in the Imperium. Being an Inquisitorial Acolyte, but not just any Acolyte, an Acolyte to an Oblationist Inquisitor. To the Puritans you will of course still be a tool, but at least they are not forging you to be a tool whose worth is measured by how much of your immortal soul you are ready to damn. Well not at least intentionally. Radical Inquisitors on the other will, most of the time, try to hide their true intentions and slowly start to give you a bit rope, and some more rope, and some more rope, once they think you can keep the secret. Until you are as condemned as he is, but you still might have a chance to notice their trickery and maybe bring them to justice. Maybe. Oblationists however will try to craft you into one of their sullied tools and when the taking of the Oath comes you will still be relatively pure. But once you take it, there will be no way to turn around for you have willingly invited damnation upon your soul and joined your Master in his hubris, thinking that such corruption can truly be controlled.

I still think Thrown Geld is effectively nothing else but the Common Soldiers Pay. This would make the most sense really. Large Empires Paid their Soldiers in their own Currency and Generally Forced everyone under that Imperium to Accept that Currency even if they had their own Currency already. Thus making sure that their Soldiers would always be able to Buy the stuff they need when Stationed or Garrissoned somewhere. Often even Dictating a certain Value for that Currency to make sure their Soldiers could live more Comfortably at the Expense of the Vassal or Occupied Country. This Currency especially in Occupied Countries often became more valuable than the Local Currency because of this Dictated Value and because it was good to use in the entire Empire. In Reality this was also used to make sure that Tribute and Shares were properly Valued. And could thus not be Increased in Value or Decreased in Value by the Occupied Country or Vassal as the Tribute and Shares were calculated in the Empires Currency. As such I think that its actually not so much a Super Rare Currency. But is simply the Currency of the Imperial Army and thus is Dictated to be Universally Accepted in the Empire at a certain Value.
