Hi guys - back with this before we continue the Grey Knights. Tell me your thoughts about the worst possible jobs in the 40K verse. If you like this kind of format as a series happy to continue it.I also am trying out a different audio post process in this video - let me know if you think it sounds better than usual, or not as good.

I think its great that you focus a few videos on "civilian life" in 40k, as it is a huge part of 40k that goes mostly ignored. Only a few novels touch on it (Eisenhorn and Shira Calpurnia novels. If you google 40k Civilian life you will see that there are a lot of fans asking questions, but not many answers. I would love to learn more about it, to enhance the RPG (Dark Heresy) game that I am running. Who are the people that the Adaptes Astrates and the Astra Militarum put their lives on the line for?

Worst job? Servitor with consciousness. Being trapped in your own body with no control, possibly in agonizing pain, for millennia, doing nothing but a single motion of your hand to pull a curtain aside at 8 AM in the governors palace?? If you gave me the choice between that, summary execution, or a penal legion, id thank the god emperor for a spot in penal legion or even being placed in front of a firing squad!! Imagine a job being so shit you wanna shake the hands of the firing squad, thanking them for doing you a FAVOR.

@@fireemblemistrash75 Also, there might be a problem with rejection. If it was artificially made the organ can be modified to be compatible with the patient. With a live donor the organ will probably be useless to most of the patients save maybe immediate family. Though this is 40k so... they might be able to fix rejection?

@@blister_sw2805 First, they are an extremely sadomasochist race. Second, they had explored every act of pleasure and torture so they could feel everything there's to feel and the same will happen to you if you get yourself caught by one of them. Simultaneously, everyday, and every hour of the rest of your prolongued life. Third, they are bounded by Slaaneesh, so they are "forced" to force you, when in reality, they actually (now) like it, because they have to do unspeakable things to others in other to escape from her/him/it. And finally, every other race *will* kill you, either in sight, or later. Dark Elves *won't* , and the reason for that is because alive you will make an excelent furniture or fuel for their deviations. Either way, your chances are better in the Warp than in the hands of a single Dark Elf.

At least that's the common trope used in 40k. I'm sure there's plenty of worlds in the imperium that are a bit less draconian and laughably inefficient. And there's probably a good number of military units that aren't treated like "operation human shield". Only the most idiotic military commanders treat their soldiers like tissues. It's basic military tactics. Use the minimum of resources and manpower to achieve the most possible. Burning through those resources makes no sense most of the time. And the mindless slaughter of soldiers for no reason or as a "shield" is also idiotic to the extreme. It's a nice trope to play around with but, I wouldn't put much stock in it. And most examples from our history tend to have a bit more detail about bloody military actions, they're generally a bit romanticised and the facts are ignored in favour of making a story.
@EasterTurkey
@EasterTurkey 5 жыл бұрын
@@Madhattersinjeans Wars of attrition are the most efficient on the scale of trillions. The US Civil War is a perfect example of this. If you have the superior manufacturing and manpower, then you're better off throwing bodies at an issue until it goes away. Being extremely tactical is time and resource intensive, plus adds more risk to situation.

starship refueler actually looks like a wonderful job for the imperium: 1) they give you good painkillers. It can't be overstated. This is a setting where only the lucky ones get to just die, and full of "you are supposed to be unconscious, but you can feel everything, just not act". But to refuel a starship, if the painkillers fail, you fall to the ground screaming, you are unable to complete your job, and you spill all that precious and dangerous fuel around the ship. So they HAVE to give you actually good painkiller. 2) it doesn't last long. No 20 hours shift, life of servitude, or any of that crap. You are assigned the job, and you get over it in minutes! 3) You get to die in the end. If you are a common person living in the imperium, you probably want to die anyway. Except, if you try to suicide they will take your brain while it can still be reanimated, and make a servitor out of you. You can't even suicide without facing a fate worse than the one you are escaping. Except by being a starship refueler. That's your easy escape from it all. I'd volunteer for the job, thank you so much.

17:57 I just wanna point out, that this is absolutely not how the Medieval peasentry lived btw, You can't sow crops and harvest crops 12 months a year. They had really long downtime periods during the summer when all they had to do was essentially look at the crops growing, feed the animals if they had them and during winter when there was nothing to look at grow most animals had gotten slaughtered except for breeding stock for next year where you would also spend alot of leisure time. They would spend most of these days working on hobbies or other trades. Like Carpentry, Brewing, Weaving, Forestry and a number of other vocations. This whole view of: "Peasants in the middle ages lived horrible lives all they did was work land and slave for their feudal lords" Is completly skewed, this is also how the different lords and kings worked also, they would for example not go to war during spring or fall. Because if they did, the peasant levies that they had wouldnt be able to work the land that provided their foods. Economy in the medieval eras was alot more complex than most people think it was.

Surely their life and situation was way more complex than it is shown, but peasantry had no such thing as hobbies, it was always linked to survival, sewing clothes for your children, maintaining the house/barn, pottery because you need to drink from something, fixing... Fatigue was a constant in these people's lives, some moments were just more tolerable, that doesn't mean they didn't enjoy life or couldn't, but never there's any rest in this kind of lifestyle.

The lasgun meme makes some sense in context, but *fans really undersell how lethal a lasgun really is.* A lasgun is far-and-away immensely superior to anything humankind has ever had in our real world. They blow a fist-sized hole right through people instantaneously from immense range. If a foe doesn't die from a vital hit, most normal creatures perish from what's called 'thermal shock'. Furthermore, they have a huge array of different models for different tasks. A humble laspistol kills with a headshot, a lasgun can explode your limb and send it flying off your body, turned right up it creates actual explosions on contact that are devastating. A gatling lasgun nest can clear a killzone in seconds. Lasgun sniper rifles fire their 'round' instantly, ignoring wind and other issues a sniper may otherwise experience. Not only is their ammunition basically just power, but you can charge them with sunlight if you have time, or throw the battery packs in the fire if you're pressed and there's no techpriests to rage at you. The reason people think they're weak is because they're being compared to things like fully-automatic rocket launchers, weapons that disintegrate you on a molecular level, and pistols that ram wire into your body and tear you apart inside. The reality, however, is that while one such brutal weapon is terrifying compared to one lasgun, a lasgun is extremely good at what it does: being used in a formation by many people. It doesn't matter if you're a killing machine that will tank a fist-sized hole through your torso, or even if most shots won't penetrate your advanced armor. When a dozen or more lasguns are pointed at you, as in specifically you, you're in trouble. It doesn't matter if you're a powerful monstrous humanoid from across the galaxy. You're going to die. "The Legionnaire that scoffs at a lasgun has not charged across an open field against a hundred of them." - Maor the Scarred, Siege-Champion of the Scargivers, Black Crusade

The worst job in the Warhammer 40k universe is... *drumroll* ...being a Disney Imagineer. ^_^ Seriously though, the worst job belongs to the Emperor himself. The worst job is probably being The Emperor Of Mankind. In life you had few confidants and no real peers, which must have been very isolating. You had to genetically produce the Primarchs because you couldn't father children of your own. Because of your long life, anyone you befriended or fell in love with died and turned to dust millennia ago. And you had to witness horrors beyond imagining in your time; you had to see mankind rise to great heights in the Age of Progress and then crash and burn in the Age of Strife. Once you revealed yourself, committed yourself to uniting mankind, you would constantly have felt the immense weight and pressure of it all on your broad shoulders. A single misstep would mean trillions die, and if you fail then the entirety of the human race goes extinct. It becomes your mission, your obsession, to prevent that. Then some of your beloved sons betray you, throwing their souls away to the evil powers that want to exterminate mankind. Among those sons who stayed loyal to you, many of them died in this war too. You had to watch Sanguinius, your favorite son, die in front of you! Right after that you had to kill Horus with your own hands. And to keep your Empire and Species alive, you had to sit atop the Golden Throne and endure immeasurable and ceaseless pain for ten thousand years. All the while you see your dream rot under the care of your subordinates, see many of your valued ideas discarded, and indeed you are forced to become a God - something you despise - to give your people hope and to protect their souls from the maws of demons. Your body rotted away to almost nothing, you have no way of knowing if any of this will work.

Agreed... when you put it in perspective that the Emperor has been doing this for 10k years, it makes all the other jobs seem not as bad. Normal humans will probably live less than 50 years, servitors will disintegrate after like a 100 at most, and astartes can live a few 100 years maybe if they don't die in battle right away, but not necessarily a bad job. The emperor, on the other hand has not only been alive for about 50,000 yrs (according to the lore), but like you say, in addition had to endure loneliness, betrayal, the twisting of his legacy... and then exist in a near-death state for TEN THOUSAND years which makes all the other short lifespan jobs seem not that bad.

You forgot a worse scenario for the psykers , being put to use by the Grey Knights space marine chapter . They literally use psykers as human firewood to heat the forges that they make their special power armor in . These psykers are forced into the furnace alive and are slowly burned to death as their mind and soul is consumed and the armor cooled in the ashes of their cremated bodies to give it it's special anti-psyker abilities . All it takes is the slow agonizing death of hundreds if not thousands of psykers to make a few suits of power armor , but remember the Grey Knights are mankind's shepherds and protectors , they can do no wrong .

You touched on the most fascinating part of the Imperium - the abyssal gap between those worlds that are verdant and "modern" and those worlds where humans are not chattel, barely slaves, nor even considered beasts of burden. Rather, they are simply recyclable, disposable, opposable thumbed tools. The worst nightmare for an individual on the latter worlds has to be finding out that the humans on the former worlds live in relative lives of luxury -- and they will *never* have a chance to escape their haunted dream.

@Maddinhpws Well you are sort of right. Of course, there must be worlds which function quite differently than described in the video, but the education point you are making does not really stand. We know, that technology in 40k is mostly forgotten and everything is dumbed down to religious ritual practices. If you think modern day education system sucks, how would you like learning latin, by rewriting passages in latin, a language that you don't understand, until you eventually do understand it and getting beaten if you do not progress fast enough. That's medieval learning, when schooling was provided by priests. Now imagine that with the mechanicus or the administratum. Every time you would show a modicum of free thinking you get violently punished. Even the ones who work with genetic modifications often do not really understand what they are doing, but are taught an exact process that they than can repeat ad nauseam.

It seems that the point of 40k is to take the concept of a dystopian future and stretch that as far as you can, without fully hitting absolute null chaos. It's a world that functions, but seems to thrive on functioning in ways that are pure sado masochistic fantasy. Some lives, a very small number it seems, are decent, but it doesn't seem like anyone can really lay claim to paradise. The point, is to give people a chance to play and imagine a dark world of unimaginable horror. There is no true hope, there is only deep despair. Why? Cause how often do you get delve into such darkness? Most people prefer the idea of happiness and hope, and most of our art and entertainment reflects that. For those who are bored, or perhaps like myself, just interested in the darkness, 40k is a way to look at a story that has no happy ending. Even when the "good guy" wins, all they've won is the continued existence of people who's lives are barely better than being in hell. It's a world so dark, that it could very much be argued that humanity being wiped out at that point would be the true victory. Everything else is just continuing our misery. This approach is likely why there are so many stupidly horrible ways of doing things in this world. Many of the jobs and such are so bad because they're designed to be bad, which isn't at all what we would hit in real life. Now, it could be that they do these things because life is cheap, when you have trillions upon trillions of people to draw upon, but it's mostly just that we're intentionally creating a hellish dystopia for our own dark amusement.

The classic issue in 40k is there aren't too many interesting stories to tell about the peaceful worlds with democratically elected planetary governors. So while they do exist (in pretty good numbers no less) they almost never turn up in stories except the odd occasion where that world ends up in the path of whatever horrors the galaxy feels like tossing at them that day. As for life as a tau, it's relatively comfortable as it trades in the relative freedoms of the imperium (the fact that's a tradeoff says something) for the relative stability/social security of the tau. And orks, well okay, being an ork is actually pretty great. I'd love to be a freebooter and go on space adventures.

That is NOT how commissars act. They may be stern and unflinching but they will only execute if you force their hand, it is a responsiblity they are taught to take with the utmost seriousness and those who abuse it are treated in an extremely harsh manner. For example, it was in a Ciaphas Cain novel I believe, a commissar acts in the manner you describe and he is arrested pending trial and execution because they were not his lives to take. If you are just hesitant to throw yourself at the enemy the commissar is more likely to remind you what is at stake, kick your ass over the lip of the trench, then jump up with you and charge. Their job is to motivate, not to execute traitors. Also 99% of the time the Guard is just sent in to skullfuck the shit out of a random bum-fuck PDF on a planet that rebelled because the governor just didn't want to pay his tithe, they then get to sit on that planet for the foreseeable future unless they really impress someone. So really their lot in life is far better than one could hope for as hiver working in a manufactorum.

I'd much rather choose to voluntarily join the guard, get a pay, food and clothes and most likely end up garrisoned at some forgotten corner of the galaxy than work in a factory or in an agri world and be a slave. Can't believe he'd put servitor before the guard. Yes, in combat you are outranked by any of the heavy lifters that are in-setting made to be toe on toe with the Space Marines or the Guard's armour, but not everything in the military is combat. Most of it is logistics. Shit, Guardsman might be one of the best jobs in the whole Imperium, unless you find yourself so hilariously unlucky as to be sent directly to a hotspot, your regiment turns or something rather chaotic happens.
@Washeek
@Washeek 6 жыл бұрын
Guys... I think you are forgetting that being a guardsman might not be the worst jobs because of how many ways you could die on the battlefield, but because of what could happen off the battlefield. As Gabol said, the military is largely about logistics and who is in charge of that? The munitorum. And they might just stick you somwehere on a ship and forget to have you offloaded and have you die of hunger or thirst or asphixiation, they might loose your transport and then shoot it down because of bad iff, they might forget to deliver rations or munitions to your front, they are just the worst and you are just a spec. But yes all in all, rather this than civilian service without the freedom of thought and speech that we have now.

Flash-lights and T-shirts get a lot of shit thrown their way, but they're pretty much the best thing a regular human can use without loads of extra training. Lasguns are easier to use than rifles, since its just point and shoot. No leading the shot or accounting for recoil, which leads to exceptional accuracy even in the hands of an amateur. Combine this with destructive power similar to high caliber rifles and you get a picture of the lasgun that is not often presented in 40k; a devastatingly powerful, uncannily accurate tool of the Emperor's will which purifies all comers in searing, crimson beams of holy light. Common flak armour is likewise much tougher than is often assumed. Just because it can't take bolter fire or shrug off energy weapon hits. Flak armour makes the user highly resistant to shrapnel, and practically immune to stubbers (aka real life modern projectile weapons). A squad of guardsmen sent to clean up and underhive full of gangers and cultists can pretend to be Astartes while they walk forward into the wall of bullets, using beams of concentrated hatred to cut off limbs and blast fist sized chunks out of actually unarmoured opponents, all the while only having to keep an eye out for ambushes and traps. When it comes down to it, the guardsman's standard kit seems pathetic because IG strategy doesn't use it for its intended role very often, and doesn't update their tactics to make better use of their gear despite often operating well outside their intended role. The Guard was originally intended to fight human-level threats, not be thrown at post-human level threats in sufficient numbers to overwhelm them or stall until the actual post-humans arrive.

It is litterly hell, ofc just much worse since its Warhammer 40k. But its so much faster to travel trough "super" hell that real space, so worth it. This is new tec, I belive old tec they skipped the whole human sacrifise since religius stuff like sacrifise and rituals not accaptable for the emperor dreams and truth, so I bet its easyer to build human sacrifise ritual instead of bypassing it like before, or the technology is lost. @@declanedmison5442 There was a discussion about this a little further up the comments. Most of this is due to poor writing from some grimderp authors who try way too hard to make this grimmer and darker. But once it it becomes obviously needless, it becomes comical and actually detracts from the goal and theme. Then, other writers later down the line have to clean up and make it clear that these are exceptions rather than standards. This applies to servitors, refuellers, and most notably to the conditions faced by Imperial Guardsmen. Most of the horror stories you hear are just that. Horror stories detailing fairly rare occurrences.

I once had a nightmare, and the story about the refueling of warpdrives made it come back instantly. I was clothed in dirty brown monk robes and stood in a long line with equally clothed people. We came into a chamber with typical grimdark industrial features where a mechanicus instructed us what to do. We had to fill pails of a liquid and pour them into bowls on a conveyor. The mechaincus said if we manage to pour three pails we did extremely well. Then the line moved into the production room, it was very clean and covered in white tiles it was ovoid in shape in the middle was a glass dome with an opening on the top. A dolly operated manually by mechanicum in heavy lead aprons and masks. We saw what we were tasked to do, a person from the line before us was strapped to the end of the dolly, in its hand a pail it was inside the glass dome trying to lift the pail and pour it into a bowl on a hand cranked conveyer .It seemed that no electronics would work there, as when we stepped through an airlock we heard the sounds of rad counters fill the place. From the sound of its panting we knew it was a struggle of someone who was close to total exhaustion. The sound of rad counters was everywhere. There was a large window made out of armoured glass behind it sat a mechanicus observing the process. The person on the dolly managed two pails and was taken out of the glass dome and taken off the dolly. Mechanicus detached it and dumped the person on a cart. It was still alive and so where the other people stacked on top of the cart. They were all too weak to move . I asked the nearest mechanicus what will happen to them. He answered in a robotic voice:" They normally die several hours after their duty, the stronger ones who can get up again will be put in line again. If they manage a pail or two then they are truly blessed to have served the emperor well". He gave me a pair of lead lined gloves. The person in front of me was just lowered into the dome. He started to ge a seizure but held onto the pail and pulled his first load out of a pool of what looked like mercury. I could hear his panting and struggle and as he poured his first pail he vomited into what I now saw was a mask with a hose to let the vomit run into a plastik bag fitted to his belt. He managed another pail before collapsing. Then it was my turn, the mechanicus fitted me with a mask which smelled heavily of desinfectant. Another strapped me in. I looked up to the window the mechanicus observer nodded and gestured to the dome lifting three fingers. I knew what to do. The radiation was already heavy in the chamber but when I got lowered into the glass dome it hit me with a fist. I lost control of my body in a seizure but managed to hold on and was decended to the pool. My teeth tasted badly and the first teeth loosend and dropped into my mouth. I pulled the first pail out and poured into a bowl of unknown material. It must have been quite tough to hold such a terrifying liquid, the pail was made out of the same . I pulled another pail, then I vomited and the taste of blood was all over my mouth. My teeth were all gone my eyes hurt, everything hurt. The second pail was pure torture. But I was awake and pulled another pail. The mechnicus gasped. I poured it and was pulled out. I collapsed on the foor crying in pain and fear. That's when I woke up. That my friends seemed the worst job to me.

Here's a dystopian and depressive thought; There might be women that are bred for creating soldiers or workers, living through constant stress and pain until their bodies give out from being perpetual incubators. I'm sure by far most women in the Imperium have no access to contraceptives and must work while being pregnant (and immediately after giving birth), but I could imagine that on some worlds they would likely take human baby factories to the next level. What's worse, is that there's a large amount of mutants in 40k and I'd be willing to bet that a lot of them would be from genetically modified wombs that could repeatedly carry a 'litter' of humans. Many of these might even be servitors, rolling around on threads doing manual labor while carrying a sagging belly full of infants in the making. Merry christmas..!

Your videoa are always entertaining, thought-provoking, and you're a gifted storyteller and narrator. Thank you.

Around the point where "bio-matter" became a common word I realized that people in the Warhammer universe probably don't fear death because life is literally hell.

I was about to rebuke you because you don't have to work hard, physical 12 hour shifts in wet boots around windswept moorland. But then I remembered that I actually love my job and I'm never bored.

Now imagine doing that since you were able to speak, and knowing that you will probably do that until you die at your job, and if no one notices that you died, you condemned your family to death because of the inefficiency of having a dead person at your work station.

I have a labor Job, Im never bored and have a good day every day as long as I break a sweat. Don't be afraid to make a change. You can make money and see a bit of the world instead of a box around you every day
