5:30 the thing that most people mistakenly think is that Sanji has no authority in the crew. In fact he has the 3rd most or probably equal authority to Zoro as their is no official vice-captain role in the crew. Zoro may be the first mate, but Sanji is technically the brains behind the crew. This will be more apparent the longer you watch the series.

Something that I think is always important to remember , is that Luffy mentioned that he was thinking about how to get stronger since Aokiji almost killed everybody. He has been thinking about this power-up for days. I don’t think I heard you guys say that it came out of nowhere, but many reactors do. We definitely learn more about this form in the next episode. Can’t wait for the rest of this fight and the rest of the arc!

The thing about devil fruits is it doesn't matter how much you eat. As soon as you take a bite, you have the power it gives you. Also, some people might tell you that you'll automatically know what powers you have once you eat it. That's not true, it's a misunderstanding. Without getting into specifics, the government knows what most of the devil fruits do, they just don't know what some of them look like. So sometimes the only way to tell what a fruit does is to eat it, which might end up with you having a lame power.

I really like that part with the devil fruits it's such a good bit of world building. Oda does something similar to what he did with the sky island were to keep the mystery he has characters state theories and hypotesis about the setting. Its weirdly realistic in a way. Also i love Blueno being impressed by Luffy's abilities and Luffy being like "man, i suck right now". Now for One Piece at a time: The gear second to Kaio-ken comparision is mostly from the color but in the manga the only indication of gear second is the steam, the pink skin is only in the anime, but it has become SO iconic at this point.

Oda has outright said many times that goku and db has been huge inspiration for him when writing his characters and anyone with more than one brain cell can clearly see luffy is exactly like goku . He was raised in isolation by his granda and wasn’t around humans or society for most of his life thats why he is dumb to social etiquette . When he met bulma was the very first time he even saw a woman . So him being dumb and doing these things have a reason . Luffy being dumb just is just for gags since the formula with goku works but it makes no sense for the plot unlike db . And super is one of the most successful anime ever made so who cares if people hate it if they don’t understand the plot its their problem .

another interesting thing about kaku and kalifa eating a devil fruit is now we get to see people actually get used to their pwoers in real time, rather than just not show any of the growing pains of it, such as not seeing how Luffy or Buggy or even say Crocodile or Eneru get used to and train their powers. Now we get to see how a person responds to newly getting their powers and how they handle that.

All the theorizing about Chimney is interesting and fun, but unfortunately the truth is much more pedestrian: Kokoro wasn't married to Tom, she was married to some human man. She just worked for Tom. And her extended family simply isn't important to the story, so Oda didn't talk about them in the main story, this is information from SBS letters. The precise reasons for Kokoro's custody over Chimney isn't established, and technically might not even be the case. For all we know, Chimney's parents could be alive and well and Kokoro was just babysitting her over the weekend, it's never established one way or another.

Its so sad that no one ever remember when Luffy used Gomu gomu no Cannon on the Franky destroyer when they attack Franky House and Luffy's hands and arms turned a little red/pink for all the speed and motion for more power, and its just a little same for this. Full theories about Chimney and Gombe being Pluton but never compare and attack with another. Plus this "Second Gear" originally appeared on the movie One Piece Karakuri Island where a Giant Mechanical Castle with metal legs almost crush Luffy and he stopped it, and his legs get pressed like this and he unintentionally created "Second Gear". Everyone needs to watch that movie.

not a spoiler, just pure physics. remember blood is pumped through our calves. so i think, since luffy is rubber, he can pump more blood faster hence shows his calves looks like a spring. meaning , more blood flow means more adrenaline or more speed i guess? so might explain why luffy's color becomes pinkish and steams releasing from him due to very high speed blood flow?

I think something that might help OP fans with the power ups in the story is to think of the narrative like DnD. Luffy before these events hit the level that allowed him to unlock a class feature. That's how we see what could be seen as in-the-moment upgrades. Luffy even mentioned having a new technique he wanted to try out on the sea train.

while yes we don't get a big like epic moment to set up the 'transformation' but there HAS been some big events that caused luffy to wanna think about upgrading: he lost against Aokiji AND CP9 back to back, and both times means he failed to save his friends from a powerful and deadly foe. SO now he got his upgrade to match said powerful and deadly foes, because he's sick of losing and having bad guys try to hurt Robin.

CORRECTIOIN - In the anime, Luffy's body gives out regular steam But, In the manga, Luffy's body gives out "CLOUDS"-like vapour. LOOK UP, Bluno vs Luffy in the manga, you'll see the details in the steam which looks like some other white smokey guy.

No, he WAS training throughout this Water 7 arc. If you don't know, Go back and watch him punch multiple times, the punches get red and it ends with a impact that sends the giant flying. That was the 1st prototype for Gear 2.

Devil Fruits are rare. Random people wouldn't just get their hands on them. As stated, each one is super expensive so even if a random person got one, they're most likely to just sell it than to eat it. WE see a lot of Devil Fruits because Luffy is on an adventure and fighting a lot of strong and notorious people. But for the average person in the world, you don't see one often.

Luffy's training arc was all the previous arcs, all the fights he's been in and all the things he's seen. I'm curious how many dots to previous arcs y'all will connect after seeing this power in use.

While it's true Luffy takes a lot from his previous battles and continues to grow his motivation for growing is because of his emotions. He cares a lot for his crew and he continues to grow stronger so that he can protect them all, so that he doesn't have to suffer losing any of them. In his mind he needs to be strong enough that anyone on his crew doesn't have thoughts of "I'm weak and holding him back so I'm not needed and should leave."

@@a_kmza I think you misunderstand the point I was making - I do agree that Luffy's growth as a captain AND fighter is definitely driven by his emotions, by his love for those he cares about. I wasn't talking about motivation, I was talking about execution of the power-up. What I was describing in opposition to his power-up is the classical shonen emotional-breakdown-fueled, half if not fully deus-ex-machina type of power-up - and Luffy doesn't exactly do those. His power-ups are imho atypical and a lot more goes into it, first of all a meticulous attention to detail from Oda who makes every experience, even the silly ones, count in how Luffy adapts and grows. He dosn't do it in a way that spoon-feeds the viewer with the process, but if you pay close attention you notice how certain experiences have led to certain types of growth. For instance, Gear 2nd and Gear 3rd didn't happen because Luffy had an emotional and psychological breakdown unlocking a shocking power-up out of him fueled by rage and loss of control, but because he, driven by his determination to follow his dream and protect those he loves, keeps challenging himself and improving on his own capabilities by pushing the boundaries of his body as well as paying close attention to each of his own/the Straw Hats' adversaries and allies fighting.

It IS a form, because just like the name says it doubles luffy's power by 2 times, like Super Gum 2. PLUS, there is the "Clouds" around him which in the Manga are not just regular steam as shown in the anime but actually Japanese artsyle type cloud which looks like certain white smokey guy.

@@matthewgilroy8701 Just like Saiyan physiology evolves in SSj so does Luffy fruit effect with every gear. Ape transformation is a form. Kai-o-ken is a technique. Gears are forms of the Devil fruits while Haki's are technique.

Don't know how it works with manga, but 2nd gear was hinted at as to "how luffy has gotten it" in the 7th movie befor it came out in the anime. In that movie he blocked a heavy hit from above, pushing his legs into doing that thing and him coming out of the situation stronger without being clear on what happened.

So in that sense, I think that makes the "deal with the devil" analogy more appropriate.....

"Chimney" means chimney in English, but to a Japanese person it's just a random foreign word. The word for chimney in Japanese is "entotsu". And when they see a chimney they think "entotsu", not the english "chimney". Most houses in japan don't even have a fireplace and a chimney so there's no general knowledge that it means something. Just like most westerners who watched dragon ball for the first time didn't know "Gohan" means rice/food. Did you automatically imagine rice or food every single time you heard "Gohan" and kept thinking it's a weird name for a child? I'm sure not. Because it's a random foreign word to you. Same thing with "chimney" in Japanese. Using foreign words for things is just hip, cool and trendy.And that's it .

Oh, Tom and Kokoro weren't actually a couple. They just worked together. Kokoro's husband has not been shown nor named, Oda's just mentioned his existence in passing. Kokoro and her unnamed husband had a son, who is Chimney's father. _allegedly!_ *dun dun duuun* Perhaps she *is* Pluton and this is all an elaborate coverup!

Yeah, I was thinking about it too while watching One Piece. The weakness of Devil Fruits, which is the sea, seems to lose its impact as the series progresses. Initially, it was quite scary to think that if a pirate fell into the sea, they would be doomed. However, in later episodes, with so many Devil Fruit users appearing, this weakness doesn't seem as threatening.

The first mate role is more of a LA thing, it's never mentioned in the manga/anime. Ranks wise Oda consider all the strawhats aside from Luffy on the same level, no matter what their role is. As for why Sanji is depicted here, it's probably simply just because he has the reins of the king bull.

I had a run-in with a fellow member, that there are no ranks/hierarchy in the crew, and they considered LA as Canon info moving forward, on the basis of Oda being involved.

@@lonewolf9325 i know Oda is involved but i still wouldn't consider the LA canon at all, especially after seeing the way some arcs and characters were portrayed. Usopp completely unable to use a cannon, Sanji offering wine to someone who threw food on the floor, Nojiko and co. not knowing about Nami's deal, Luffy being a lot more insecure, Sanji and Zoro fighting over Luffy in Arlong Park and so on...if i treated the first mate thing as canon, despite what Oda said before in the sbs, than i would have to consider all that stuff canon too. I don't find the first mate thing a big deal, but i think it sets some expectations about the crew roles that aren't really a thing in the manga/anime. They can all step up when necessary.

22:08 Yes you can replicate a Devil Fruit ability such as turning your body to iron but you have to train really hard for it versus someone who can just eat a Devil Fruit and have the power.

Loving the talk about the devil fruits. There is one thing that Oda has made coments on a few times that have a lot to do with what you are saying. There havent been a direct mention of it in the manga yet, but you can actually see it if you know where you look at. So it's not technically a spoiler, but jsut in case I will leave the comment like this lol (and ovbviously not gonna add any detail from the manga or anime, nor examples or anything, just Oda's words) The thing is, devil fruits do change you, in some ways other than the powers. Some devil fruits have efects that are very bothersome, or may influence your personality, make you do certain things... Each one is different but there is no devil fruit that doesnt affect the user in a way. Just in case the world wasnt complicated enought hahahaha

Devil Fruits are an interesting power system. Some abilities are recognizably strong from the beginning, like Aokiji. Others, however, may sound/seem disappointing at first; only with hard work and creativity do their strengths show. Luffy is a very good example. Having your entire body take on the properties of rubber doesn't sound that powerful, but Luffy has managed to become a powerful fighter. And with Second Gear, we get our first real power spike for him.

People forget Belamy mostly did the same thus why its natural for Luffy to try it or something similar,he thinks of a thing then does it like he does even in the manga/anime now.
