the German airline Lufthansa, has 27 out of the 120 active Boeing 747 passenger planes currently in service, making up nearly 25% of the total. They've announced that they don't plan to retire these planes anytime soon. While it's their decision, many are surprised and wonder why Lufthansa is holding onto these planes. But to understand, we need to go back in time.

Why keep the B-747, easy! Lufthansa owns them and knows them, designed by great Boeing engineers. Who loved the business of making planes, a vocation not just a job! B-747 is good for 10 or more years. Continue your rule, Queen of the skies!

Call me outdated and old, but I love to fly in a 747. With the galleys and partitions in the seating pattern it is one of the most comfortable planes for long haul. Especially the possibility to roam around the cabin and change from the left to the right isle at the back of the plane makes it unique to me. It is the only cabin, where you have the option to stand&stretch without bothering other passengers. I specially favor the third-last row in economy in the Lufthansa setup. This is where the fuselage allows only a 2-4-2 seating instead of the 3-4-3 leaving a nice big space between the window seat and the fuselage.

What the AI robovoice didn't explain well is that Lufthansa puts business class upstairs, so those folks are basically in a private plane. They have their own dedicated crew up there and their own bathrooms. They don't even see economy class. similar with 1st class. It's up front in the nose. Again, no contact with economy. And they have windows that almost face forward. The seats are actually in front of the pilots too. This makes the 1st and business class experience unique. No other plane can offer this. People paying for those high priced seats like this. And with the high demand for these classes at Lufthansa, this makes the 747 profitable despite the 4 engines. Couple that with the Lufthansa Technik thing and the nostalgia, it's a good strategy.

For you true enthusiasts, the book "747" written by Joe Sutter will impress you. Mr. Sutter was raised on a hill overlooking Boeing Field. He was the project manager for the 747. Got my first 747 ride on a flight to Hawaii in 1970, I think it was Northwestern. Anyway, on the return there was almost no one on the flight and I was able to pull the arm rests in the center row and lay down. Long live the Queen. Maybe convert the 747 to two engines? Helluva an airframe, sort of makes me think of the B-52. Our oldest daughter is a long-time flight attendant for United. She flew redeye on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania on 9-11. We have an affinity for all things fly.

First flight was on a Wardair 747 from YYZ to the UK (Prestwick?) in the early 80's. Great experience when even coach seemed special. Then numerous flights with Northwest to Japan in the 90's, then EVA, Korean, Cathay, JAL, and Virgin in the 2000's. I'll always remember the long and lumbering takeoff run, and the 41,000 ft. cruises over the arctic circle, with the occasional view of the northern lights. Probably my least memorable flight was in Business Class on the upper deck of a Northwest flight. They still had smoking in some sections of the flights. The row in front of me was smoking and there was this portly fellow who was a chain smoker. Uggg what a miserable flight. Northwest's 747-400's were very well used.

On a 18 hour flight from LAX to Australia you need a fast plane, and for crossing the pacific you really do need 4 jet engines. and you need the stability, and speed to maneuver around storms, you need the number of people and the amount of cargo to subsidize the flight that is going to have a high fuel use. once you have people trained to maintain, repair or rebuild such a plane, it becomes more efficient and safer, you can not place such carbon use over the safety of peoples lives, but in many ways planes filled with people on very long hall flights rather then planes just jumping to each major airport rather then build a high speed train system that brings people to cross continental or cross country flights. there still is no huge design shape change in passenger jets, just really updates in added tec.

747 is not a must for LAX to Sydney flights. 787, A380 and the A350 can do it without any issue. And 4 engines are better than 2 engines for long-haul flight logic is irrelevant today. Most newer planes have only 2 engines.

This airline has so much invested in a maintenance facility they also support other carriers that operate these aircraft which includes freighter aircraft. This airline has also brought back the "blow dryer aircraft" the Airbus A340 into service. I have seen these in routes to SouthAfrica and the orient. This aircraft was rushed into production by Airbus only to have their plans set back when the original supplier of the engines slated for use on it had technical issues with the engines. Airbus had to settle for less powerful engines. These engines are the more older classic low bypass engines that are not as economical to operate. As demand soared they brought these aircraft out of storage, brought them up to code and then placed them on routes to low income countries.

I'm surprised that more people are not commenting on that very fact. Lufthansa Technik lays claim as one of the world's biggest Boeing 747 outfitters, having done 28 to date. The aircraft requires special expertise and repair capabilities; we are still number one because Lufthansa is still flying the 747-400 and the 747-8. Lufthansa Technik can do everything short of making the airframe. Not only do they keep their 747's constantly upgraded, but also contract to other airlines to keep theirs airworthy as well.

The 747 was designed very much with hauling cargo in mind. That is one of the huge advantages of the 747 over the a 380 and probably why the 747 will continue to fly for quite some time. There is a lot of money being made on air freight and I don't think Lufthansa Is hurting themselves at all financially by shoving all of that cargo into the belly of their 747s. In the sky's grand theater, the Boeing 747 stands tall, a majestic giant painting elegance across the clouds. With wings wide as a welcoming embrace, it carries dreams high, like a benevolent guardian of the skies. Though not the fastest, its engines hum a powerful melody, a serenade to the endless horizons it explores. In the vast world of planes, the 747 reigns, casting a majestic shadow on the clouds. Beyond speed and efficiency, this flying giant tells a story of luxury. A floating palace in the sky, it invites passengers to indulge in the joy of soaring above the ordinary. Its wings, like freedom's embrace, stretch out to touch the edges of what's possible. In the grand show of aviation, where speed takes the spotlight, the 747 shines with an aura of majesty. It goes beyond just flying; it's a simple yet powerful expression of human creativity reaching for the skies.

I really wish they would stop saying that the 747 consumes more fuel than comparable twin engine airliners. It does not. The only realistic comparable twin to the 747 is the 777, and they burn almost exactly the same amount of gas as a 747 from the same vintage. Those giant 100,000 lb thrust engines burn twice as much gas one engine on a 747. I know, I have flown both. True, four engines are more expensive to maintain. Lufthansa flys to many slot restricted airports and the most economical option for them is the bigger airplane. They keep flying the 747 and A380 because they make money doing so.

Many pax are happy to be on a 747 but that you kinda already mentioned. (Due to it's design, there are seat locations only unique to the 747).

As airplanes age, the fuselage starts to crack. To repair this, sheets and/or aluminum strips are riveted on the cracking. It is expected to see this on planes over 25 - 30 years old, especially around the doors and windows. A few years ago, I did LH between LAX and FRA and was quite surprised to see this kind of repair on a couple of 747-800s that, at the time, were only 6 or 7 years old. This leads me to believe there might be a structural weakness in the 800 version 747. A couple of months ago, I was on a 25-year-old 400 series. No sheets and/or aluminum strips were added to stop cracking.

Appreciate your feedback, but what is nonsense? That the few 800 series I've flown on already had repairs for cracking? That cracking does not happen and thus does not have to be repaired? Or that cracking on a "young" plane not an early indication of issues? @@tinocodde9788

Why are you comparing a three class 747 to two class 777X? apples to oranges. And by the way, you know your audience can tell the difference between 747-400 and 747-8? It would be nice to have corresponding planes in the video when you talk about them.

They use them because they are economical. That was why they built the 380 to begin with. You can't tell that to an environmentalist know nothing.

for the ignorant, CABIN can be specs to ANY plane, even a CARGO plane can be made luxurious. To say these made the 747 special is totally cow manure

They all should do what Luft Hansa did. These planes are all in perfect shape and can fly for many more years. There is no reason to retire them and spend millions on new planes. That way they don't have to litter the environment with jest sitting in the desert.

From a passenger point of view I love and trust the 747. Also I don't trust the modern composite aircraft due to problems in the past caused by ice. I hear the A380 can't be converted to freight carrying because of it's composite structure, which means that when the aircraft becomes EOL for passenger use it is scrap, but again, because of it's construction it has comparitvely little value as scrap and would become a costly hasardous waste disposal liability. No doubt Lufthansa see the benefit of hanging on to the 747 for those reasons.....But what do I know.

They are also speed rated tires. The 3 sets I have burned through were good for winter up to about 80k, and they will easily and safely last 100k in the summer. The trick is to wear them out fast enough you have to do enough driving otherwise the rubber will 'age out' before you use them up. (Used on Mercedes and Volvo Awd, and Toyota) Excellent tires. Similar experience with Nokian Rotiva on my truck. Load range E +80k and still going strong.
