Just started the episode so maybe you'll build them later in the episode, but watch towers. Like everywhere, including along the coast. Early warning before an attack can save some good troops if outnumbered, or allow you to bring in the necessary reinforcements. Also maybe build the missile building for forester warband in londinium to have a safer place to build those 2 turn units while samarobriva can churn out chosen swordsmen 3rd - when possible, get a navy up. Tara got invaded via sea, with watchtower visibility and a decent navy, you can destroy armies coming in via sea. Maybe even build a small raiding force with enough boats to survive pirates and a few units to hit coastal settlements for some quick cash, hurting the AI economy and forcing them to spread their armies over several areas. Lastly, basic, cheap units for garrison to keep tax rates high. If you find peasants too cheesy, warband can work too, plus they allow for emergency reinforcements

I'm really glad you started uploading again. As for the campaign it's very tough indeed; I believe the only way moving forward would be to build several doomstacks of generals/noblemen cavalry + chosen swordsmen (don't waste your resources on barbarian cavalry). You'll need like at least a couple or more of full stacks to band together + lots of battles. Let's go!

I once played as gaul and got pushed back all the way back to britain - what you can do is what I did, just defend the shores with ships, make sure they can´t cross. Then build up your economy and some big armies and then go on the attack. Might take a long time but it should be do able. Might be worth a try at least.

Maybe try scouting out as many cities as you can. Then rush and take the poorly defended ones. Raze the city and move on. Let them recapture it. Should ruin their infrastructure and economy for awhile, and by the time you can retake it, the AI will have built back some of the economy. Could also raise a navy. If you can sink an army at sea, it can save you some land troops.

Recruit spies to scout. You can only take fights in your favour. If you are going to fight, even if you can win, you have to know if it's worth it. You might have noticed already, AI doesnt put lots of troops to defend settlements meaning that you can avoid major military conflicts while taking out and massacring their cities. I actually suspect italy, except Rome if the Senate is still around, is poorly defended. I will probably head straight to Italy and build up from there. Before that, you might want to play like a horde faction since settlements in the north are not profitable and too stretched out to defend. Another thing is try to recruit some cavalry. Chosen swordsmen cant beat Urban Cohort but they can hold for a few seconds. If you want to beat them, it's got to be in a moral game. Speaking of army composition and tactics, I actually DON'T recommend Forester Warband. They are one of the best archers in the game but the major downside is they take 2 turns to recruit. In the mean time, you could've gotten 2 heavy cav/chosen swordsmen. The opportunity cost is high. Besides, archers aren't going to do well against late game Romans unless you somehow outmaneuver them and shoot them from behind. I suggest having at least 1 Druid unit in each of your army for the moral bonus. Keep in mind that pila are devastating. Your units are going to get decimated(literally 10% of your men gone) from the first volley. It means that even your chosen swordsmen with excellent moral can collapse in a heartbeat. Keeping your general close and having druids helps. I know it's tricky but try to optimize the Warcry ability by pre-warcrying since the ability takes some time to activate and while it's being activated, your men are completely defenseless so you want to time it well. Try to warcry as much as possible as it got a fast recharge(I think it only lasts for 30s). In general, you want to coordinate well and end your battles as quick as possible once your infantry engages the enemy: Cav beat enemy cav -> get Cav into a flanking position Warcry -> charge -> Cav flank(focus on their general if possible) Wham bam, in and out. Playing defensive/Long sluggish battle is not your forte, in fact, it's the Romans' forte. Taking initiative is key especially in an open field battle. Btw, one interesting thing I noticed from the graphs and the fact that YOU are the richest faction makes me suspect that the Romans, except for the Scipii, might not be holding up as great as you think in the ultra late game. So there's hope :)) Sorry for completely nerding out, hope it helps!!

Not criticizing but genuinely want to help as I'm loving this campaign. Morale is king. You're units will never stand up to the Romans in a straight fight. Flank. Hit them in the rear. The chosen swordsmen can hold the line but they cant win. You have to have more cav for the flanks. Also war dogs and a unit of archers on flaming shot. You MUST break them and run them down. Even if you could win in a fight the costs to retrain your units will become too much. I think you saw from the siege of Londinium that you can't just put all of your units on the town square. Those urbans will grind right through you. Again, you have to have some cav in the city to get behind them and route them. Its tough to do in a barbarian city, but you can at least put the swordsmen on the very back of the town square so you're cav can smash into the side of the Romans once they get to the square. Again, flame shot and war dogs. Archers and dogs are a cheap way to defend frontier settlements. You can sally out to take out heavy chunks of the enemy army before they attack. Just watch out for enemy cav. Good luck King!

My tips: as another person said, recruit more cavalry and smash legions in open combat, kill their general and they fall easily with a cav charge from both flanks. I would also build more forts around strategic cities like Londinium, to gain some extra turns when the Romans come. In sieges I personally find more interesting to create various holes in the walls, by reusing the battering ram, it helps some nice flanking actions.

Something worth noting is that a ship in Samarobriva’s port will allow troops to walk between the mainland and England without your ship ever leaving port, even if your port is blockaded.

I believe I would probably start building forts around my settlements and chuck barbarian mercenaries in those forts so that Roman armies would be busy besieging them. Then your main armies could go and conquer new cities.

Just saying with that Brutii army that spawned out of nowhere, the most logical explanation for that was that they were hiding in a forest nearby. I would also recommend you to recruit more cavalry, because the infantry will always be inferior to that of the Romans.

@@A1anArr0w I think a nice balance of chosen swordsmen and cavalry would do. Just to pin down Roman legions with infantry and then hammer them from behind with cavalry. It's the best way to quickly destroy any unit with minimal losses of your own. It can be done on those huge plazas too.

My only advice is to raid! Appear at coastal settlements, take them, and burn it all to the ground. Destroy the buildings, at taxes high, and leave. Let the AI pay to rebuild, you need the Denarii

Oh and merge units. Whenever you can merge units without losing one of them (say both are at 60%) your should do so. It gives you one full strength unit and one unit to retrain, rather than two weak units needing retraining

Recruit a lot cavalry and challenge invading armies in open fields. Even barbarian cavalry can beat urban cohort when isolated and singled out. Also, take advantage of the forests. Bait and ambush the Julii and Brutii

The choice of infantry is fine, but battles between infantrymen are going to be a slog and Romans will inevitably have the advantage unless you play smart. Roman legionaries lack mobility, outmanouvering them is the key to beat them. Btw, you've not been playing for a while. You're a bit rusty, but you'll get there!

Barbarian settlements are built on small hills and barbarians are typically best with quick rush style of fighting. You could make your stand at the top of the hill, mass warcry and then charge. That should quickly overwhelm armies and cause a mass route.

Excellent episode! I have to admit I did not think you would survive the first wave of Roman attacks… Well done! The problem might be that they will overwhelm you by sheer numbers, despite your tactical prowess. And that you run out of money. Nevertheless, great and unique campaign!

As long as they dont build more siege, the ram can be destroyed, and you can attack from both sides on the walls. Still winable. Possibly you can let them destroy the gate and use boiling oil to slaughter tons of them, worked for me once. The fight is hard to win but if you fight at the walls you got a chance.

Never played my own chosen swordsmen on very hard but I've fought them on very hard and even urban cohort wouldn't make them rout. Usually ends in a slogging match. I find archer's so key. Archers and use of the towers although useless in London. I usually have a useless unit i dont want fighting further away on the walls then when they take and come down from the walls i quickly take them back and I'm getting a ton of free easy kills. Eastern walls can't which is irritating though.

also you can't afford to lose men to battles you cant win. abandon the settlement the come back later. the londium battle should not have happened. you can lose a settlement but dont lose ur army with it. leave the settlement if you are going to lose. with that army u can get another settlement.

Don't exterminate if it isn't necessary. In Deva you just stalled the towns development for many turns and in Condate you had good public order and just killed off your recruits/taxpayers needlessly
