The first LM is still the best IMO. Had by far the best vibe and atmosphere. The later games got progressively brighter and goofier, focusing on slapstick humor. Even the art style became more silly, and dare I say, 'cartoony'. The thing that made the first LM great was that it didn't feel or look like anything else in the Mario universe. Not that it was super scary or anything by any means, but it struck the right balance between silly and creepy. Not to say the sequels didn't do some cool stuff, and they were impressive in their own right. On a technical level, LM2 looked great for a 3DS game, and I enjoyed the mechanics (minus the 'episodic' structure), and LM3 is extremely impressive from a graphical standpoint, and the level of detail and physics are great - but there's defenitely something missing from these games compared to the first. Sadly I doubt we'll ever get another LM that returns to the darker vibe of the first. The best I can hope for is a full-blown remake, but even then I'm sure they'd change the art style and make it brighter and the tone goofier.

Luigi's Mansion remake was released in 2018 if i'm not mistaken but It was akin to newer games graphics-wise at least

@@Brokenface The 3DS version, yeah. But I consider that to be more of a slightly altered port than a full-blown remake. Even there, they did brighten things up and made Luigi's model look more like his standard, cookie-cutter modern appearance, but since the base game of LM1 is still intact (and the fantastic sound design), I don't mind the port too much.

To be fair, the reason why LM1 has a darker athmosphere was because of technical limitations. You just couldn't make 3D games as expressive and stylized as today, so they tended to look more lifeless and realistic. I really prefer LM3 because it looks and plays incredible. It nails the spooky stylized style and has honed the unique mechanics of Luigi's Mansion, but I agree that the story is lacking compared to LM1. The fact alone that ghosts don't have descriptions anymore makes a big difference.

I beat this game, no exaggeration, over a thousand times as a kid & i still revisit it from time to time (mostly during halloween). with that being said, no game has ever had an impact on me the way the first LM did, i still have dreams to this day of Nintendo remaking this game & adding extra rooms to explore. Like a LM “extended” version under the “hidden” mansion version or something. You have made exactly what my dreams get my hopes up for LOL. Brought me so much excitement, sorry for the ramble but i wanted to share cause this made me extremely happy to watch. thank you for literally bringing my dreams to life without even realizing it hahaah

Some pros and cons: this feels like the original Luigi’s mansion in terms of writing and atmosphere, which we should have got more of, instantly hooked by the mysterious voice and the ghost toad, while the characters feel like themselves and the writing feels like Luigi’s mansion it’s written a little weird at times, wasn’t great pay off in end either, hope to see more polished stuff like this

Lets be honest they were already very goofy in the first game, it's just that the new ones got more personality so it makes them seem more human than the old ones, which makes them less scary, also the vibe of the game and the fact that they didnt have much animations of them just chilling around made it so they really felt threatening

This is quite an interesting mod. And I really adore it because it has some of the ghosts from the beta of Luigi’s mansion and some of the unused animations for certain ghost, but it’s also got the atmosphere of the OG Luigi’s Mansion and not the goofy and not so scary atmosphere of its sequels.❤

Little bit of advice. Hold B to turn off the flashlight. That way, you can look at the ghost without surprising them, then you can flash them when they're closer.

The newer games should have this tone and style like they had the same levels but the ghosts are redesigned the levels are to keeping their original scheme but with darker ambience it would really honestly give lm1 vibes to all the games which id be up for but i still like the games just wish they weren't so toddler friendly and yes i get Nintendo is a kid company but they shouldnt be going for kids that young

The problem was that the dialogue was a bit confusing at certain points. I don't think Luigi and thus the player were the villains judging the other entities. It seemed like the dark force that was possessing the house was the evil one, but the dialogue makes in confusing in that it almost sounds like they invited us here in the first place. Unless, there were two "forces" at work and the one that hired us was an anti-evil force trying to get us to liberate the house from the evil force? IDK

However we have seen how Nintendo is about “copycats” or extremely popular mods. They usually write up a cease and desist letter. So it’s safer they don’t link it. Just gotta google it or ask around.
