I don't understand how a college freshman is a safer choice than Euroleague MVP. That makes no sense according to the quality of the NCAA vs the Euroleague.

Its upside. His game is really polished. So they dont know how good he'll be in five years, he might hit a plateau. Unlike college players whose games become more refined. Look at Tracey McGrady out of high school or lebron. They were raw athletic talents.

Trae Young safer pick? yep, a 6.1 kid who's been plaiyng with kids in college for a year, instead of a guy who's been playing professionally with grown ass men since he was 16, probably the most accomplished teenager in the history of basketball. Youngest player ever to win the euroleague's MVP, second youngest spanish league debutant behind Ricky Rubio, MVP of the spanish league, euroleague champion, spanish league champion, eurobasket champion with his national team Slovenia, u name it... Mo Z That's exactly why they didn't take Doncic in the draft. He is ready to be the centerpiece for a franchise after playing years in the pros in Europe. While Trae Young is apart of a long term plan for Atlanta. Why draft Doncic when you still have at least 3 years of rebuilding to do? Not saying the Mavericks are all that great right now but they are farther ahead than the Hawks. Plus, the Hawks did get a 1st round draft pick out of the deal as well. All in all I'd say the Hawks got exactly what they wanted in this deal and then some.

@@russh6839 In a way, yes, that's true, and that's exactly why the Cavs drafted Anthony Bennett over Victor Oladipo that year, because Bennett "plays" the position they need, it could in theory work out in the end for the Hawks, but it is still a stupid decision, when you tank you are looking for that otherworldly talent, even if you are not sure about Luka, you should at least be sure that Young will never get there, if player A has a very similar skill set as player B, and Player B is a trancendant player for that skill set, then the chance for A to be just as good, is basically zero, Player B here is Steph Curry.

The thing is that when Luka was playing against 25 and 30 years old in the EuroLeague and Spanish League, winning the Euro Championship tournament with Slovenia and being MVP in the EuroLeague this other rooks were playing against 15 year old in AAU. This dude is not scared because he already went through the tough shots and the big moments. He plays like a veteran because he is one.

They didn't believe you because he wasn't brought up in the NCAA, being black or white has nothing to do with it. Which is what the NBA "scouts" only look at: The NCAA. The NBA scouts that look outside, like the Spurs, get some real talent from overseas like Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, two of the biggest steals in draft history but obvious good players for anyone that has ever seen them play in the Euroleague. And the top teams in the Euroleague are on par with some NBA franchises, Real Madrid even beat some NBA teams in interleague friendlies, some were even teams that had been in the finals playoffs.

Unparalleled work ethic. Dirk was the same; having been discovered practically in obscurity, putting the work year after year and ending up one of the greatest in history. Talent alone means nothing, it's all about the work and the mentality. I hope Luka keeps improving, cause the talent sure is there.

I think it is not really important which overall pic someone is, Nikola Jokic has been #42 and now between top 5 center in league. Talent is important but also and much more hard working, passion and development in next years. When Giannis came from greece/europe he has been looking starved :D and a average talent in greek league..and take a look now, his athletism and between the best top 10 players in league. Lonzo Ball is in his second season but his numbers and develepoment are not really good, Luka Doncic has after 2,5 months in NBA 200% of Lonzo his stats...Ayton and Young have also much better numbers than Lonzo, seems like Lonzo is not a great talent or lazy, no development : )

How many EU players came to the draft as MVP players of EUROLEAGUE as 19 years old? So there was no comparison with the rest of EU players at the draft. ESPN and the rest keep forgetting that as 18 years old was chosen on Eurobasket 2017 (Slovenia won a championship with winning every single game on championship with Doncic and Dragic) in the team of 5 best players of Eurobasket championship in the company with Gasol, Porzingis, Dragic... so actually he already played with and against NBA stars as 18 years old so... was he really a risk or mystery? was really a question will his game translate to NBA if he already played with and against current NBA stars and ex NAB stars... at age of 18 years old?
