Steam Deck has actually kind of been my FOMO killer. I've been beating my backlog of 1300 Steam games, as well as 3DS, Wii U, Switch, Vita games all on the Steam Deck quite successfully. A lot of older games, like Elder Scrolls Oblivion don't natively support gamepads on PC, but work flawlessly with Steam Deck joystick and have gyro aiming

It's ultimately a PC though. Like a 2018/19 midrange gaming laptop with a nicer form factor and 'easier' to use front end. So your PC doesn't become useless it just gets slower for some things. But it'll play most modern AAA games at 30fps so that's a 30 year old game library available 🤷

@@Cerg1998 it's apparently some sort of issue with flathub? I don't really understand it, but it was just a case of finding the right reddit post with the right command line information to put into terminal. It probably wouldn't have taken as long if I knew enough to know what I was looking for, and it's a common enough issue that people are writing reddit posts about it. To me, frankly, that's enough for me to not recommend it to a lot of people. It's great for people like me who don't mind faffing around and learning about systems and trying things to make adjustments I like, but if someone wants to just pick up a handheld and get on with it there's too many teething issues people are reporting about it, even this far into release.

Huh.... Yikes...! Thought that would've been an easy proposition. Say, I thought I remember watching a promo for it when pre-orders were available. I thought they said something about SteamOS being powered by either Debian or Ubuntu??? If so, that's supposed to be one of the most flexible Linux distros in the world. That's a bit weird that changing modes would become tricky or painful. 😕 I've never heard of Crankshaft that Luke installed, but there may be a more compatible app out there. Also, if it allows it, is it probable for the Steam Deck to use Wine to successfully virtualize one of the Windows apps and get along nicely with capturing play from SteamOS? [Wine isn't always perfect for each Windows-based app.] If not, what about VLC Media Player? It does have a capture mode and is a platform-independent app (e.g., Windows 10/11, Android-powered streaming players, Fedora OS, Debian, etc.) without the need of an intermediary. Just curious; don't mean to cause harm or confusion.

It depends on how much you have use for a handheld, really. It's an impressive piece of kit, even if I wouldn't have much use for it myself. I tend to prefer the clear delineation of "PC for PC stuff, and console for console stuff". I like the plug-and-play accessibility of a console, and the keyboard, mouse, and business tools of a PC. For someone like me, the Steam Deck just seems like a mix of both platforms' limitations. I think it was more that they're adjacent to gaming journalists so there's a subtle expectation that they'd be familiar with the Steam Deck because it's a gaming product, but because it's different to any other gaming products they're familiar with, it's not as intuitive to them so it's harder for them to meet that expectation, and that leads to some awkwardness.

It's also just amazing for emulation. It's definitely not for everyone though. Most games will have them mapped as an Xbox controller, since that is the most common controller on PC since Sony made theirs needlessly hard to use on PC for quite some time there. That said the amount of control customization you can do from the deadzones, to the touchpads, to the touchpads in the analog sticks, deadzones, modifier keys, different ways to make the pads and sticks function...You could make the controls behave just about any way you could dream with some tweaking. The only, only thing I have issues with is shooters. Part of it is just me being far off from my time playing shooters with sticks...part of it is I can't quite nail down the same feel as my Xbox controllers sticks when it comes to how it responds. I can't put my finger on why it doesn't feel right for shooters for me but it doesn't.

I became a deck head months ago, no regrets. The ability to launch multiple programs in handheld mode is useful if you want to have another program like Discord running while gaming. I think every console maker should adopt the controller customization options Steam has. Gyro aiming engaged with soft pull on trigger is amazing. The desktop mode works best when connected to a keyboard, mouse and ideally an external monitor or two. I only really get into it when I need to add non-steam games or muck around with emulation stuff. Unlike a traditional console the community that uses the deck can produce and implement tools and features that are felt to be missing.

Tbf to Three Houses, the places like CEX bump up the used prices for other entries in a series when a new game releases precisely because they know people want to buy older ones. It's a big tradeoff with nintendo. They suck for never lowering prices, but they've also consistently been theist used game friendly for a while now. They sell carts that you can use full functional from used for 90% of their games, with no worries about original ownership etc, unlike a lot of other console games.

On a slight tangent, I dug out my PS Vita this week and was pleasantly reminded how small and light it is. In contrast to the Steam Deck, it actually feels portable. So basically, if Valve could please make a "Steam Deck Slim" that is about half the size with the same horsepower, that'd be swell 👌

That's kinda the issue though, at least for the time being the deck would likely not be able to shrink all that much due to cooling needs and their want to make it repairable etc. Mine basically lives in my backpack when it's not in use though, sure you can't pocket it or anything, but I never trusted pocketing my Vita either, it was in the hardshell case which wasn't *that* much easier than carrying the deck around since it all ends up in the backpack anyway.

Tip for tech-savvy folks: buy the cheaper model and upgrade the hard drive yourself. All the Decks are exactly the same except for storage space and the “anti-glare” coating on the screen (but my screen protector came with a mat finish so that solved it). You will save $100s and have a Deck with plenty of storage for any game you could want, plus more if you add an SD card.

Yeah, the only things you get with the more expensive models that you can't get with the cheaper ones are the accessories, like the case and the unique Steam profile and keyboard skins. Those were worth it to me, though, and the convenience of not having to upgrade my storage myself.

I love the faint wheezing laugh from Jon (I assume Jon, or maybe James) off camera during the cold open. I'm still on the fence about getting one. When my laptop finally dies I'm tempted to get a Steamdeck as a replacement. My only issue is using my PS5 as my primary method of gaming these days, in part because said laptop can't handle gaming anymore without the fans protesting loudly. That and most of the games I really enjoy playing I already have on the PS5. I guess I've answered my question about getting one. It's also a lot bigger than I thought. I haven't seen too many hands-on vids of it, but seeing it here makes the thing seem massive and I can imagine my hands getting tired after a bit.

Much like Luke, when the Deck was initially announced I didn't care at all. I've got a decently powerful gaming pc, I don't travel much, when I do travel I've got a bunch of perfectly serviceable phone games and if I've got good reception Steam Link will even work in a pinch. But then I borrowed a Deck that the company bought for a couple weeks, and when I started really playing around with it I became a convert pretty quickly and ordered my own. It's great for playing smaller games in bed (I play a LOT of Hardspace: Shipbreaker before bed on it), it's good for playing 'big' games while I'm waiting for code to compile or renders on my main PC, older games that I would've expected to be the hardest to get running well under Proton have just worked out of the box (often better than they do under Windows today), and it's a great emulation machine. Also, since my gaming PC is also my WORK PC, the Deck allows for a physical and spatial separation between 'work' and 'play' that is good for my mental health. (also at 10:00 : You don't actually have to switch over to the first game to shut it down. You can force close it by hitting the Steam button, selecting it, and selecting 'Exit Game', more or less the equivalent of killing a game through Task Manager. I'm also pretty sure it de-prioritizes CPU access for games that aren't active, so while there is some additional battery drain, it's not like both games are fighting for all the processor power and cutting your battery life in half.)

12:49 I do actually watch a Deck-focused channel called Fan the Deck, and that channel does call Steam Deck users the "Deck Gang", so if you were joking then you've done that fun thing where you've accidentally just reflected reality when you were trying to satirize it. So that's good!

I've had mine for a few weeks now. It's awesome but I followed a YT video explaining how to make it able to use an external hard drive and for several days I couldn't get past the opening logo. I finally managed to figure it out through a comments section on another YT video and it's been amazing ever since. That said, certain quality-of-life things that are pretty standard on consoles, like out-of-the-box external hard drive support and native video capture aren't there yet. I still highly recommend it though!

I agree with Luke's assessment. My husband has one and it is great for him, since he likes to do mods and have the option to change things to his liking, but I knew I wouldn't because of the extra weight and how much spacing there is between the controls. Great portable game system for those who want to utilize a lot of features.

We'll all have forgotten too. Ellen will just randomly pull Luke up mid SOTWe next Feb and give the ol' "So... Luke. Had a reminder this morning. Are you... still playing your SteamDeck?" And you all know the look she'll be giving him. Slightly side-eye at Luke and slightly side-eyeing the camera, with that little smirk. And we'll all be like "Oh yeah, Luke's SteamDeck that was his entire personality for like, two months."

There are few steamdeck competitors, Ellen might like the Aya Neo Air, since its really small. its like phone-sized. if you use the Nreal Air's which are projector based head mounted displays in the form of sun-glasses, you don't have to look at yourself. since they are glasses, you'd just be seeing the room you are in instead.

When Luke was talking about how fiddly PC gaming gets, I felt that. I love console gaming because in my day job I'm a software engineer. I get home and just want things to *work* for once. Kudos to the people who persevere and wring every last drop of performance from their gaming rigs, but I'm old and exhausted and just want the serotonin.

To be fair, once you've gone primarily portable, it's almost impossible to go back. I can also say I wasn't interested in Steam Deck either when it first came out, but given I have a few Steam games that don't run _quite_ well on my (non gaming) laptop, the idea of being able to play, say, _Monster Hunter World_ at spec was appealing enough to get one. (Ironically, it's _not_ the game I've so far played the most of on it.)

So funny story. Last weekend I was with my sibling and their little one getting breakfast and I was showing them all the games I put on my Steam Deck, when our server asked me if it was a Switch. Without missing a beat, the little one says no, then proceeded to pull out the Switch and shows the server. I really do love that it I got one. I went for the 512g one with the anti-glare screen. It helps out especially to not see my ugly mug on the screen during transitions as well. 😂 It's a fun system that I really enjoy playing. And the game options are really great as well in both official and emulation. It really allows for the doors to be blown open on gaming on the go. And while it has so many options, it's true that it's not for everyone. The weight and the size of it might not be best for people not able to hold it. That and switching to desktop mode and the complexities of a Linux system can be a royal pain. I know my S.O. couldn't hold it in their hands and the games wouldn't be that much of an interest to them. If I had any issues, it would be the size of the the internal SSD. With the size of certain games, you really do need something bigger to handle carrying your library with you. And for those mentioning being online, when you travel a lot and reception is not possible, you want to be able to have options when you're off grid. So having a sizable internal storage drive helps. That and I wish the thumbsticks are magnetic to eliminate any drifting issues that may arise. I do love I can dock the system and connect a controller and headset by both Bluetooth and by cable as well. Still, it's my go to next to my Vita and 3DS XL. It's definitely worth having on the go. And if you ask me if I'm playing it a year from now, the answer will be a resounding yes. Been playing it for seven months now after all, why should I stop now? 😂

I am genuinely impressed with the Steam Deck, but if I'm being honest I do have quite a bit of buyer's remorse. I'm not entirely sure why I got it. Every game I start playing I end up switching to my PC for the bigger screen. Its also far too heavy to comfortably play laying in bed like I used to love doing with the GBA back in my youth. I am also most housebound due to illness and so I don't really have much opportunity to travel or spend time away from home. Its an impressive bit of kit and certainly exactly what plenty of people are looking for. I just think I wasn't quite the target audience and made a bit of an expensive mistake.

I'm somewhat similar, in that I'm not leaving the house nearly as often as I was when I was still in school and portable gaming made more sense for me. Most of the use I've gotten from my Deck recently has been because I need a new office chair, and the one I'm using as a stand-in isn't comfortable enough to want to play games at my PC, so I pick up the Deck and play them in bed instead. But I've enjoyed having it as a tinkering project to get what I want to run on it running, and for the occasional time I get to play it while waiting to pick up food at curbside. I wish I had more reasons to use it, really, but I enjoy what time I do get to spend with it.
