It really feels like Disney abandoned the sequels. Even when the prequels where hated upon release, we still had an entire multimedia project connecting episode 2 to 3, meanwhile there is almost no media connecting or expanding upon the sequels. The sequels need their ‘clone wars’ to flesh out and expand the movies, if they don’t an entire generation of new fans growing up with the sequels will forget about them and move on.

You have my thoughts. I think an animated series like The Clone Wars would add not only more context, but liven the era more. Having it focused on Luke's Jedi Academy would be amazing to see. I believe they could have Luke's exile follow a similar path as Ahsoka's in the first 5 seasons of the Clone Wars, perhaps even ending with Luke leaving solemnly as she reaches out to him like Anakin did. Though I would also love if this hypothetical series focused on Rey, Finn and Poe before Episode 7. The Force Awakens' grounded aesthetic could be leaned into, and how the conditions of their upbringing made them who they are. I'd also like to see more of Kylo's time with the Knights of Ren, and their connection to Palpatine. I also would like to see some books for each film's anniversary like they have done for Episodes 1 and 2 in recent years.

I honestly don't see there being enough of a unified story among all the characters to make this work. Although a "Tales of the Jedi/Empire" style anthology could work really well! But a series would be too all over the place, esp if the characters can never meet. What they SHOULD have done is make The Resistance show about...well, the Resistance, and its' main group, instead of just calling the show that, but then following a group who was as far removed from the action as possible. The real problem with that show was that they didn't know where the story was going, so they couldn't have the show do anything meaningful to avoid stepping on the trilogy's toes; since there WAS no planned story, the only reasonable thing to do would have been to delay the series till after the movies were done, then retroactively tell stories of Rey, Finn and Poe's adventures after Ep 8 (esp how Rey fixed the Skywalker saber), while fleshing out Snoke and the Knights of Ren...but that ship has sailed, I guess.

The only alternative I would take is a slightly older audience oriented High Republic show. Love the Young Jedi Adventures though. So, episode 7 should be simply Luke's Academy and the discovery of Snoke, then episode 8 would be the rise of the First Order and Luke's banishment and episode 9: the final battle and destruction of the emperor. Disney has overcomplicated things, and now they need to get out of this mess.

Agreed, the idea behind the sequels was fine but it had a lot of execution problems. In a way it's the same problems the prequels had, it's just that the prequels didn't come out during the time of Twitter, Reddit, and fandoms acting like they own everything.
@jipjomon3 ай бұрын
That's an huge amount to cover in three 2 hour movies, though. The sequels struggle to give enough screentime to each of their dozen characters as is. To put it into perspective, they're only about 3/4 as long combined as Andor season 1. The prequels cover a large time period, but they mostly do it through implication, and have much fewer main characters - the actual on-screen events are only short vignettes in Anakin/Obi-Wan/Padme/Palpatine's lives (and most of Padme's ROTS arc got cutting room floored). The CWMMP (and the TPM tie-ins before it, and Plagueis later on), and TCW do a huge amount of supporting work.
@bmarshyАй бұрын
I personally do not like the sequels, but I respect your opinion (I only have a porg in my profile picture because I got to see one of the actual props they used when filming TLJ, and although I'm not a huge fan of that movie I still enjoyed seeing screen material from a Star Wars movie). But what I would love to see is a sort of alternative sequel story, which I am hoping will be fulfilled in the 'mandoverse' time period. That doesn't mean retconning the sequels or removing from canon (and I wouldn't expect Disney to EVER do that anyway), but for those fans like myself who would rather forget the ST, an alternative post-ROTJ story would be pretty cool. We would get to see storylines from the EU brought into canon - like Thrawn as Heir to the Empire and Luke rebuilding the Jedi order - that would provide a satisfying story redeeming Luke, Han, and Leia. It wouldn't contradict or undo anything we saw in the sequels and would flow into them fairly well for those who would want to continue the timeline, but for the fans who wouldn't want to watch the sequels then it wouldn't lead directly into them, either. Instead, I'm hoping that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni can turn the Mandoverse into a sequel story of its own with its own satisfying conclusion where Luke is a Jedi master, Han and Leia have a son and are happy together, the New Republic has defeated the imperial remnant and the galaxy is relatively at peace, and we would only get hints that some of the imperial remnant has fled into the unknown regions where we know they will later establish the First Order, but within this story itself everything ends on a hopeful conclusion.
@Bryan-dr5qy6 ай бұрын
Putting my 2015-2019 hat back on and speaking from the meta context, The Force Awakens by virtue of having to reintroduce the fandom to the Star Wars universe had to put Luke in the backseat of the narrative so as not to take the spotlight away from the new generation, which resulted in the air of mystery that comes from the 30 year timeskip and the cliffhanger ending which ultimately gave The Last Jedi little wiggle room. Rian Johnson chose to have The Last Jedi tell a very character-centric story leaving things very much open-ended for the next movie to pick up. Interestingly, The Rise of Skywalker makes up for The Last Jedi's lack of worldbuilding in ways we are seeing current Star Wars media like The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch benefit from very much like how the end of Attack of the Clones and the beginning of Revenge of the Sith paved the way for The Clone Wars. I think you have articulated perfectly the problem that people have been trying to put their finger on, I don't think it's so much that The Last Jedi was 'subversive for the sake of being subversive' or that The Rise of Skywalker was 'course-correcting', it's the fact that people had to make this leap in order to fully appreciate the narrative being told. I personally can see what The Last Jedi has to say about hero worship and how The Rise of Skywalker answers that by having the average joe coming together to defeat the devil in the shadow rather than leaving it to the 'good guy vs bad guy' conflict, but having the context from the demilitarisation of the New Republic alongside with the rise and fall of Luke's Jedi Order does go a long way in helping people make that leap from a lore perspective which would better prime people into the underlying narrative told across the Sequel Trilogy.

They should have picked between either having the NJO destroyed or the NR destroyed and focus on the consequences of one. Now the period immediately of Sequels have to redo everything that should have been done post ep.6, limiting the potential stories that could be told in either era. I’ve been thinking about how to make a both Rey and Luke’s Jedi order shows without them stepping on each others toes. I’ve come to the conclusion that the story of the Jedi order should be split amongst the two. The gathering of the knowledge (sacred texts, holocrons), the early formation of the order, the pressures of running a school and the difficulties of teaching a troubled kid should be left to Luke’s school. Rey’s school can focus on the students themselves, the Jedi Hogwarts that people have been asking for. This could very much focus on the students and their journeys to becoming Jedi. Rey, Finn and Poe should also have an animated series that takes place immediately post TROS.

I agree with a lot of this. I think you you have a great perspective and love that you are trying to be a voice of reason by looking at things from all sides. One of my biggest frustrations with Disney is their treatment of Luke Skywalker. I didn't love what they did with him story wise in the Sequels (I definitely wouldn't have chosen it,) but I feel like I understand it pretty well and can appreciate it. My issue comes with the fact that they seem completely reluctant to fill in the gaps in his story that would connect the Sequels to the original saga. I think it would have helped with fan reception if they had taken the time and effort to fill in those gaps before TFA released and then as the other movies were releasing as well. Instead, they seem to be going out of their way NOT to tell those stories. In some instances, it even seems like they are trying to replace many stories that should be Luke's with someone else (i.e. Ashoka and Ezra are taking over Luke's role in the Thrawn trilogy, and Ashoka is taking Luke's place in the Abeloth story.) It's actually something that really eats at me (definitely more than it should.) I just wish I understood why they seem to want to ignore/erase Luke. One point of disagreement I have with you though is that I think the Prequels 100% stand on their own. The Clone Wars is freaking awesome and definitely enhances the prequel trilogy, but I don't think that the tv show was needed to rehabilitate them. Kids of the 90s and early 2000s growing up definitely contributed to their perception in pop culture, but the prequels were also just masterpieces that look even better with time (see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaKvp2ppo7SIkLs and kzbin.info/www/bejne/nH3aZGOreJ5lh9E ). In my opinion, people who think they are bad either didn't pay enough attention to the movies, or haven't spent enough time thinking about them.

It doesn’t matter if he immediately regretted it, the fact remains he did it. He sensed a growing darkness in his nephew…..and did nothing, he didn’t talk to him, he didn’t talk to his parents, he didn’t confront him, he just let it stew for months or years on end before saying “ok time to die”. That’s not Luke Skywalker, the same guy who refused to kill his father. Luke Skywalker would not say “the Jedi need to end” and all that garbage. I dont agree it dont feel connected from OT and PT which some part and dialogue states the facts we have learned from both trilogy before this. Anakin brought balance to the Force and many years there was balance this is confirmed by Luke itself in TLJ. Luke knows about Darth Sidious is Palpatine Sith name. Yoda reminds to Luke to teach Rey what he have learned about Vader case so he can help Rey to bringing Ben back to light. If not, Yoda should be said Rey is reckless and naive believe Ben could be turned. But it doesn't because Yoda also believe Rey's instinct is right base on Anakin's case. I agree there is flaw, lack and we also seen that in OT and Prequel too. I hope The Mandalorian, Ahsoka and another tv show or film maybe, can tells the story from Bloodline book and The Rise Of Kylo Ren comic so we can see the whole context more details and understanding how everything in TFA event begins. More importantly we need to see who Ben Solo before fall to dark side. He's not like Anakin but he has anger and conflict like his grandfather. But he also different, he's not seek the dark power just because to save the one he cared about just like Anakin.

As a fan, I have to admit that I would like to see the time period as a whole be fleshed out, even if I don't like how it ends up. The unfortunate reality is that it feels like (due to the backlash around the sequels and the aforementioned fact that we as viewers know how this time period is going to end) Disney has sort of abandoned the prospect of doing anything major with the legacy OT characters, and with their seeming desire to focus on continuing the story of Rey and her Jedi order, I don't think that a show like Luke's Jedi order will ever happen.

I personally would love to see more from Ben Solo especially since he always was the more interesting version of Anakin for me. Before Tales of the Empire was released I really hoped that Tales of the Jedi season 2 would cover him in three episodes. Furthermore I saw a video from the channel Tale Foundry which covered redemption storys. In this video he explains the potential a story could have had in which Ben instead of Rey survives and he has to make up for his past, has to prove that he has changed and has to live up to Reys sacrifice. This could also have been a story I would have loved to see.

I can´t agree more, and if I could add a little more to the wishlist, if it´s 2D with Genndy Tartakovsky onboard, with the main conflict being a canon version of the Yuuzhan Vong war (it could be the Grysk), the reintroduction of some EU old characters like Mara Jade, Nom Anor or Borsk Fey Lya, and with moments like the last adventure of Luke, Han and Leia, a duel of Luke and Kylo Ren after the end of the rise of Kylo Ren, and ending with Luke arriving to Ach-To, it would be just a perfect project for me. I´m with you on many of those points, I like the sequels and the new Disney+ shows, I haven´t disliked any of them, but with some particular exceptions, I haven´t felt the same excitement for Star Wars since the old EU, being TNJO and the Darth Plagueis nobel unsurpassed to the date for me. Come on Disney, I want to see Coruscant in ruins after a giant attak like the one on "Star By Star", Coruscant it´s not in the sequels, they can destroy it without damaging the canon!!.

Based on what we’ve been told already, the New Republic era was a time of peace and nothing big or important really happened. The Kylo Ren comics even imply that Luke didn’t let Ben or the other students do anything significant. Just studying, learning, some light exploration; while Luke handled the heavy stuff. I’m guessing he was trying to protect them from darkness, and doing so left them unprepared to become Jedi, meanwhile Luke became prideful and ignorant leading to his grave mistake.

I hate the sequels. Nothing is going to change that. I do appreciate this video and I agree. The main problem is that there is no connective tissue between what the OT characters were like at the end of ROTJ and how they’re characterized in the sequels. I think more context or and explanation of these changes could help *some* but there is a two headed problem. We don’t know how these characters actually got to this point, and the point they arrived at.. is awful. So more context could help. But no amount of flashbacks will make me like or enjoy who luke became.
@nickamen6 ай бұрын
I agree. You also can't change the fact that Luke was missing from TFA and that we didn't get a single scene that reunited Luke Leia and Han. Then add in the fact that they were all failures and that neither Luke nor Leia were there to witness Han's final moments but Rey was.

I'm honestly surprised by this idea. Maybe because I'm not really a Star Wars fan, just on a deep Star Wars kick over the last few months; until recently I'd only seen the (saga) movies and a bit of Clone Wars, and now I've caught up on most of the Filoniverse. But Revenge of the Sith always bothered me in how it spent the last 15 minutes in a speedrun to set everyone up in place for A New Hope to begin, especially Padme's death by plot convenience, leaving nothing to happen offscreen in the intervening 19 (apparently exceptionally uneventful) years. And when I recently watched The Book of Boba Fett and got to Ahsoka's line about the temple being the safest place in the galaxy for Grogu, I cracked up. For that matter, I was in my teens when the prequels released, and I've never really been convinced that the flawed movies we got were definitely an improvement over the vague mythos the OT sketched out through Obi-Wan. The prequels are sort of the illustration for me of the dangers of trying to color in every little spot and not leave the audience to imagine what might be in there, that it'll never be quite as cool as what viewers imagine for themselves. The idea of following Luke's hopes and dreams setting up his new Jedi academy and meeting a bunch of fun new characters while knowing the day they all die is so unappealing on the face of it to me that I've joked about how we're of course never meeting any new Jedi in the New Republic era. I had no idea they already existed in print, but I still can't fathom putting them on screen, let alone in their own series. There's boundless open space to play in Rey's new Jedi academy and do new stories in the Star Wars galaxy. I'd much rather that, or notionally unconnected stories like Mando, than a story that's told entirely in dramatic irony mode, all "We Like Being Alive". Just really surprising.

@guynamedbob83746 ай бұрын
I think Luke’s new generation of Jedi should have still been around, but there would be few in number. Without Luke to guide them, it would be up to Luke’s senior students to handle the younglings and less experienced students. With that, the New Republic but mostly the Resistance would do their very best to protect and hide the last of Luke’s new Jedi Order from the Knights of Ren and the First Order.

It is a crime that we have no on screen Disney Star Wars film scenes with Jedi Master Luke and Force Ghost Anakin. That by itself encapsulates many of the issues I have with the sequel trilogy. As much as I give Rian Johnson credit for trying. He was backed into a corner story wise by JJ. I found Luke's reasoning for exile to not be fleshed out as you mentioned. Rather than showing us we were just told and given a flashback. I wish the sequel trilogy fleshed this out more and perhaps made Luke more responsible on a galaxy wide level. Perhaps if Ben caused some sort of calamity causing the deaths of millions of lives and the new Republic losing trust in force users might have been a stronger reason for Luke's exhile than him just igniting his light saber over his sleeping nephew because he had a vision. Even seeing darkness in Ben to me isn't enough context. He literally saw evil in Vader and sought to save him anyway and only fought him when he was forced to in the heat of battle. He learned the lessons about seeing past the darkness in the worst of people. Which then goes back to my original point. If Luke is having conflicting feelings about Ben, where was Anakin in all this? Surely he could have been there to council his son. To me it's a huge misstep by Disney to leave the central character of Star Wars out of the final trilogy. Those are my two cents. Great video overall 👍 👍

On another note, I can see Disney planning an animated series like you mentioned. It totally would work. Many fans were disappointed we didn't get more adventures with Luke, Han and Leia. It could fans who didn't love the sequels what they were actually hoping to see.

Story telling wise. There's no problem with them jumping forward 20-30 years to the next generation. The problem was undoing every accomplishment of the OT and resetting the characters to where they were in the OT trilogy, only older and sadder. Han, Luke, and Leia all are stuck in the same jobs they had in their 20s. Leia's been demoted General but still a rebel leader. Han is a loner/smuggler again, all his character growth undone. Luke is the last of the Jedi...again. The Jedi Order was wiped out...again. But now, they're also failures at fresh things. Han and Leia have a failed relationship and are failed parents (which needed more explanation as we're left them being cool, loving people). Luke (the character who symbolizes hope) has given up hope because he failed and all his students died, and the explanation of why Kylo went so dark is pretty much just "he went dark". Luke's out of character murder contemplation is only triggered by seeing how far Kylo has fallen to the dark side, so it doesn't answer the question of how this kid raised by the three nicest people in the galaxy fell to the dark side. Anakin at least had multiple traumas to draw his anger from. Kylo is just angry to the point of murdering his loving father for raisins. (Snoke has zero backstory to the point he's irrelevant. Rey whose backstory was teased as a major plot point had no planned backstory.) What was a good idea is flipping the script, having the New Republic in power and the Empire/Neo Nazis being the rebels/terrorists. *That* was a great idea. It moved things forward, until Ryan Johnson ignored the whole bit about them being a small terrorist group and moved things back again. Exploring the issue of child soldiers had great potential for intelligent real world political commentary...only that thread gets dropped entirely. Again, it was such a wasted opportunity to kill off Luke's students. A new, smaller, more rag tag Jedi Order has *so* much storytelling potential and would have brought a genuinely fresh element to the screen. Particularly if you want to push diversity, weirdly bad story telling choice.

I would LOVE for more stories to fill in the gaps of the timeline. I don't really like the sequel trilogy as a whole (there are things I love tho) but I wanted to and I will take any reason to see it better than I do now. And I hope Lucasfilm explores both that gap and past TRoS

Just thinking how interesting a small cast of young Jedi would have been, gradually being defeated by the First Order and Kylo Ren. Somewhere between the thousands of Jedi in the Prequels and the handful post 66. If anything it would have been ripe for spin offs and tie ins. I think in my mind there must have been other students who survived or left before completing their training as with Grogu. Also a big missing piece is Rey's father. Was hoping he would be one of the children in that lab at the end of the bad batch, and them getting him out to live a mostly normal life would have been the finale. Animated series is certainly the way to go, bring in Ezra and Ashoka if it will make Filoni happy, although I imagine them as wandering nomad Jedi if they survive to that point, neither of them seem to have much interest in rebuilding the Jedi order. I think perhaps some non jedi characters would be good too, the same way we had Rex in the Clone Wars. Honestly Lando was underserved by the Sequels and deserves more. I remember imagining him as becoming a semi legit senator type, instead he pops up in a van. Could also lay the ground work for many other aspects of the sequels, the civilian fleet, the Sith loyalists outside of the first order, the state of Coruscant, definitely the Knights of Ren, etc.

I've seen the sentiment of an animated series for Luke's academy thrown around a lot. I'd prefer it over live-action, myself (honestly I just want people to get over their prioritisation of live-action over animation). I'm into the idea, the only question I really have is that if they bump up to when Ben fully turns, they're gonna have to deal with The Rise of Kylo Ren comic. I'd be fine if they adapted it or anything, but I know how fickle Star Wars fans are over canon so IDK what they'd show or if anything would be changed too drastically. But everything up until then would be cool. One line that confused me that even the Kylo comic doesn't really elaborate on is how in TLJ Luke says half a dozen went with him while the others died? Like, maybe he misinterpreted what the survivors were doing, but it's still odd. Just... I hope they don't relegate it to to just Tales of shorts. This deserves more than just a few shorts. But yeah, I'm not even opposed to like a series showing the early days of Kylo Ren, like it could be a dark mirror to the Obi-Wan series, where Luke loses faith in his pupil after trying to reach out to him, except he actually goes into exile a failure instead of coming out with renewed purpose. Whether it's a miniseries or the culmination of a larger Jedi Academy series is one thing, but I do think kind of like how Obi-Wan helped with a bit of the connective tissue with certain character motivations, this could maybe ease the thoughts of the people who feel like Luke should have reached out to Ben and been more forgiving instead of giving up right after the vision he saw. Like, it could show that yeah he did try to forgive and reach out to Ben, but Kylo doubles down and Luke is just left with guilt after his efforts fail. BTW I'm actually surprised you didn't bring up Star Wars Resistance, an actual TV series. Like sure, it IS aimed at a younger audience than say Rebels, but I do think there is some underrated world building there, especially with things like how the First Order was able to get a foothold in certain areas, and some looks at the New Republic at this time. Honestly the only real downside is that it only starts six months before The Force Awakens, with the first season ending during that movie with the destruction of Hosnian Prime, and Season 2 going past The Last Jedi, so it's a very limited time frame. It's not the best show by any means, but there is some stuff worth checking out if you're willing to give it a chance.

The benefit of using games as a medium is that they can offer more than one storyline and ending. First, excellent video. Second, my issue with the sequels stems from my years enjoying the expanded universe. In Legends, Luke improves and rejects the old Jedi Orders methods. He trains regardless of age, allows Jedi to have families, and encourages attachment. Canon portrays a Luke who is repeating the old mistakes like discouraging attachment (telling Grogu he has to let go of Mando) to name just one. Granted He has missteps in Legends too, but it seem cavalier to just bulldoze 30+ years of story for the sake of doing your own thing.
@StarWarsCentralized6 ай бұрын
Hey I totally get it- Luke’s Jedi Order in Legends is so special to me. I probably prefer it to canon. I just also find that the Legends NJO was widely established before the prequels, and therefore didn’t have to grapple with the depiction or the Jedi Order in those films that was much more complicated than was alluded to in the originals.
@zacharyvance23656 ай бұрын
@@StarWarsCentralized that’s true. And what was so cool was that as the prequels (and later Clone Wars) came out, you saw some of that grappling in real time with the later additions to the books. Once again a fantastic video by you as always, I will admit even though Luke's New Jedi Order was short and some would considered it a failure I think outside of the Ben Solo incident he did do a great/good job of rebuilding the Jedi Order from the Ground up it just that the Ben Solo incident is a black stain in this whole mess. But ultimately outside of that I do think Luke did a great/good job of rebuilding the order. It's crazy to think the only story that focus on Kylo Ren outside of his appearance in Aftermath: Empire End, Last Shot, and Shadows of the Sith is one comic and that one is 4 issues like it should have been 10 or more issues now I don't know if that Charles Soule's idea or the Editors of Marvel who mandated that this series should be short I don't know. Hell it's even more crazy that outside of Rise of Kylo Ren, Last Shot, Bloodline, The Alphabet and Aftermath Trilogies and Mandoverse we literally have nothing on the 29-year gap between Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens compared to the amount of books and comics of the same era in Legends? Hell what more bizarre that in canon that the conflict in the sequel trilogy is literally called the First Order-Resistance War rather then less generic or boring like say the Resurgence War like at least the Galactic Civil War and the Clone Wars have very cool names especially as perfect historical terms. We need more stories on Ben Solo as a Jedi along with Hennix, Voe, and Tai especially Tai who I thought was an awesome character especially in the beginning of the comic series where he is the rational of the trio not to say Hennix and Voe aren't good they are definitively great/good characters but I really like Tai more and would love to see more stories with him along with Ben. One of the things I want for the New canon is a Young Jedi Knights style series in which I'm glad that you brought it up in you're video and I think it would work for both eras mainly the 30-year gap between TRJ and TFA and the High Republic Era, With the latter being mostly about the Firebrands (Stellan, Avar, and Elzar.) youth & Adventures and especially about Ben Solo, Tai, Voe, and Hennix. You make a great comparison with the prequels, we definitively need a Clone Wars style series like say Luke's searching for Jedi knowledge after Return of the Jedi and maybe each season could cover it's own story like maybe the first few seasons will take place during the time gap of 4-9/10 BBY before he meets Grogu while the next few seasons will be after returning Grogu to Din Djarin. I would love to see some of the legends stories being retold and adapted in this series like the Ossus plotline in Dark Empire 2 where Luke discovers the planet Ossus and meets Ood Bnar that would be the perfect way to introduce fans to the Old Republic series and then allow Lucasfilm to make Old Republic films. Maybe with Lor San Tekka and how did Luke meet him I would love to see (whether it is a canon version or just the same character from Legends) Sedriss Ql being introduced into canon although there are going to be changes like maybe this version is a Acolyte of the Beyond or what? I do wonder if you were the one in charge of this post return of the Jedi project like what stories should be told in different formats like YA novels, Full novels, and even comics & games. Also who would you pick as Authors or writers for each story and how would you outline them like a plot summary or synopsis so that each future writer or author will added the details when telling the full story like a writer's/story bible of sorts?

I hate the way Episode 9 explicitely tries to retcon or criticize Episode 8), and I too feel that there is a need for a bridge between the OT and the new canon. And I think it will come, eventually, just not now. Unfortunately the audience backlash after TLJ was very big and very loud, and the fact that they decided to go in completely different directions with the Mandoverse, the Bad Batch and the High Republic, to me, shows that they are (justifiably) a bit scared to touch the sequels. They need to rebuild the general audience's trust first, and then they'll be able to carefully approach the sequels again. Hopefully they can get it done, because I love Star Wars, including the sequels, and I want to see it get its well deserved high ground once more.

It might have made sense if a young Ben had been radicalized by some Empire loyalist movement led by the populist celebrity Snoke (before his accident), and eventually Luke had to kick him and a few of his fellow Empire simp friends out for being disruptive edgelords. Then he comes back as Kylo with his friends, now calling themselves the Knights of Ren, looking for vengeance. Luke's reluctance to hurt Ben results in the deaths of a bunch of young students, and as the Knights destroy the Academy, Luke takes the surviving students and gets them to safety. A lot of the sequels' story elements could then be kept with some reworking - even Palp could have been a Force ghost manipulating Ben behind the scenes, and Rey could be just another very young student traumatized by seeing a close friend or relative murdered by Kylo and suppressing the memory. Luke returned her to her parents, who couldn't deal with her in that state, so they sell her off. Luke feels guilt for the dead children, and anger towards Ben for what he did, so he takes time to refocus himself. When Rey finds him, one of her first words to him is "Master," as she remembers her past.

I wonder if any of Luke's students can be "saved" in this sort of series. Perhaps have a couple of them end up in the World Between Worlds or something in the finale and end up essentially traveling into the future post-ROS.
