Update comment: I’m one month into my new career as a data analyst at a large charter school company (over 20 analysts on our team). I just wanted to come back here and say thank you! I focused on positions within education (changing from a 14 year career as a math teacher) and landed a position within a month of starting my job search. SQL and Excel are used a lot! My advice to anyone starting out is to get comfortable with those two programs (especially Inner Joins with SQL and PivotTables with Excel).

Maaaaaan, the way you explain stuff makes me feel like this is something reachable, despite of its level of complexity. You make it sound, somehow, easy. Not because it is, but because you suggest a self development path for those who want to learn on their own. There are many out there who put themselves on a superior position, maybe caused by their formal-education ego, but for some reason you must follow their same steps, which means you'll never be as awesome as they are. Thanks for breaking it down for humans. Big hug from Argentina, and keeping on rocking with that good work 💪🏻

My formal education was Mathematics and am now working as a Data Analyst. I would say that my Intro course for Discrete math is the single most applicable math class I took relative to my current job. Understanding set theory basics (A intersect B, A Union B, B not A, etc.) are foundational to structuring SQL (or any other) joins correctly. The ideas behind it are pretty intuitive, so most people can do analytics without having Discrete Math training, but the people I work with who studied Set Theory write joins quicker, more intuitively and accurately than those who didn't.

I truly enjoy joining in all these comprehsensive curated courses out there which do so much to help us with dealing with how to be a Data Analyst, unlocking peak creativity, optimizing our health and wellness, forgiveness and meditation, avoiding vulnerability in the workplace, getting more done in less time, even if we've haven't had enough restful sleep or a healthy nutritional breakfast because in the typical workplace these days, you're expected to get online early and start signing and returning documents, renaming all files in folders, and have them all done well in advance of COB (whatever that is anymore). Fortunately, many of these courses are brown bag lunch and learn events, which allow us to grab a sandwich while while we learn more from the life lessons learned by the host. Thank you Like Barousse for caring and sharing and helping us to LEARN MORE.

I love this and it's something I've been thinking about more over the past few years having worked with people reskilling in remote work. I look back on my career and learning paths, to date, and it was rare that an industry or roles were well outlined (including in a degree program where we only learned well into year 2 what paths there might be ahead, and this was mostly from previous learners). It would be great to see potential/recommended learning paths and career paths more clearly outlined for everyone from younger learners to people throughout their careers to help people make more informed decisions on where to take their learning or careers. Obviously there are great content creators out there making it all clearer, and educators asking great questions, but it would be great to make this more of the norm. Great content Luke and great comment Steve!

I’ve been going through imposter syndrome thinking I’m just not good enough. I’ve done plenty of training and I do great but when my boss presents me with real life data, I instantly freeze and I keep getting stuck and frustrated with every task and request given to me Just wanted to look up some advice and came here. Definitely eased my nerves and I feel like I’ve recaptured a little of my confidence back watching this. Thanks

@@therickestpicklerick hey thanks for responding. Actually means a lot. As a bit of an update, I’m doing better. Still struggling at times but after having a nice one on one with my manager, we’ve been able to kind of create a plan to get me where I need to be with my development as an analyst and it’s been going pretty well. Been doing smaller projects, better direction with my training, working more closely with the other analysts on my team, etc. Yeah I still get confused a lot but I’ve regained some of my confidence back. And I’m hoping it’ll only get easier from here on out!

@@jordannng7180 this is exactly how you do it. You’re doing well. A solid, honest, and professional relationship with your manager goes a long way. I struggled with imposter syndrome for six months and it can have adverse effects, so remember wellbeing is owed to oneself. These jobs can feel so ambiguous at times and that’s part of the joy is learning to love learning, the process, and oneself. Where do you feel your current challenges are? How have you grown in the last two months?

What a great video! Unfortunately I noticed it's almost impossible to get 1st job related to data analysis. It's hard when you're good, highly unlikely with zero experience or basics only. Besides, learning those skills takes years while you forced to take different unrelated jobs - it doesn't help with the cv either.

Hello Luke, I came across several courses online and noticed that in a majority of them, if you want to become a Data Analyst, you will need to know Excell (pivot tables, V-Lookups, which I actually like), SQL, Tableau, Python, and some others. I guess my question is becoming a Data Analyst still worth pursuing, even in this current job market, especially being an entry-level Data Analyst? If you have the skills and want a job, are there any temp agencies that specifically work to recruit IT personnel such as Data Analysts? Other than soft skills, are there other skills, soft skills, or tech skills, that would benefit an entry-level Data Analysts in the current job market? Other than LinkedIn, what are the best job sites to find jobs to work as a Data Analyst, in-office or remote?

Thats a good question. To be come a Data Analyst, I don't think you need to have a "Data Science degree" BUT I do think that having a degree is valued by employers; whether it is in a related field or not. My recommendation would be to get the degree (maybe even evaluate switching to something more aligned with your interest as well)

Awesome video like always! I'm curious to know what you think about using Salesforce as part of a DA's toolkit. It didn't come up in your LinkedIn scraping which I'm not surprised. But I wonder, will it become more important in the future as more companies are moving to Salesforce as their CRM?
@LukeBarousse
@LukeBarousse 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah Salesforce is a very niche tool, so I don't think it really comes close to the popularity of these other tools. That being said, In my last role we were integrating and starting to use SalesForce. So I do think it's not a bad choice to learn, but may not be applicable to all analysts depending on their company even uses Salesforce or not.
