Luke I thought you'd appreciate the external power brick...I mean one of the most common repairs in iMac's is when the internal power supply becomes faulty. It's a lot more expensive to get someone to open up the iMac and replace it than simply buying another external power brick and cable!

Why I like these videos is because they are relatable. It’s fun to watch people specing out their machines and spending thousands of dollars on high end iMacs and Mac Pros. But these videos are actually useful to us.

For routine home use, where everyone is using Wifi and using Clouds and Drives, Checking mails, MS office work etc. I think the base mode is more than enough. I have hardly used the thunderbolt ports on my MacBook since I bought it. At least the headphone jack is still there. Thankfully. The design, I really like. All in all, a very solid machine. People shouldn’t forget what it’s replacing. The previous iMac at 1299 was a disgrace.

@@ziasmailbox You even save like a third of the price if you buy the Mac Mini and already have a display, mouse etc. and still save money if you buy cheap versions of everything else you need and the Mini has an Ethernet port, which the base model of the iMac does not!

@@eswarjuri I do have a screen. I'm already planning to upgrade it to 4K as well. Even basic benq 4K 27 inch will be fine for me. Probably mounting it on a desk arm. Then I'll be able to use my macbook and desktop cpu with it. The problem is the set of softwares I use professionally have not upgraded themselves to work on M1 , they'll take 2 years. So till then M1 won't be any use to me. Let's see what's gonna be available then.

With the base iMac, you could get add the OWC Thunderbolt hub and add two extra thunderbolt 3 devices (not just USB 3) for $179, beating out the mid-range iMac. This would probably solve those connectivity issues.

Spend the extra $50 for a thunderbolt hub and it should solve your ports problem. Plugging USB devices to the back of the old iMacs were always a big inconvenience to me anyways so I always use a hub

Personally, I would want the next model up. However, for my wife its perfect as it is. Since its aimed at (or should be) the lowest simplest consumer users, I think it's fine. However, I think touch id and the ethernet port capability should be in the base model regardless. The main argument is that the cost increment to the next model up is pretty small. The external power brick doesn't bother me in the slightest as a long term laptop user plugged in most of the time at home or at the office. The green colour looks an awful lot better than I expected as well. I thought the blue looked to be best from the Apple video. but the green really steels the show by the look of it.

I bought this one as well. I have an iMac at work, and I use my MacBook at home because I have an old, old iMac that I don’t use anymore. I wasn’t in a rush to upgrade because I have had access to a 2013 model at work. Finally since the pandemic and having to work from home I made the decision to upgrade and when I was told to wait for the newer version. Base model will be fine for me

The higher up models are nice but not worth it lol I know because I got the 2020 IPad Pro and I don’t really have anything that will require how much power it has

For the port issue just get an OWC Thunderbolt Dock that uses one Thunderbolt Port and gives you Ethernet, SD Card Slot, 3 USB A 10gbps ports, 1 USB 2.0 port, a headphone jack and 3 additional Thunderbolt ports. It was originally $249 but now is $279 but it’s still a great value dock.

Honestly I love the visual design. I recently finished my senior thesis on technology design trends of the 80's-00's and predicted that we would see a revival or homage of that early 2000's Y2K aesthetic and sure enough these iMacs were announced a week before I handed in my final.

Such a beautiful computer. I love the throwback to the early 2000s iMac colors, the size seems great, and you get such a nice integrated setup (great screen, mouse, and keyboard). I don’t think there’s anything I dislike visually about them, but I would probably pay extra for the 4 ports so I could keep the base storage and plug in external drives, and possibly go for more ram (I do batch photo editing, so that does matter to me).

Finally, someone reviewing the base model.. exactly what I’m thinking of buying. Love this video and your videos in general Luke. I’m thinking blue, with touchID keyboard upgrade. I’ll add a couple of usb-c adapters for sdcard and usb-a. I think of this iMac as a minimalist consumer model, exactly what I’m after. Almost everything I do is wireless, so minimal ports should be fine.

The white bezel start growing on me just with YT videos. It makes sense for the iMac since it's mostly against a wall. But for MacBook Pros, keep it black.

I’d say for most regular users, the port situation isn’t an issue. I’ve never needed more than the 2 USB ports on my 8 year old MacBook Pro. I only occasionally connect an SSD for backups. Almost everything else is wireless connections.

The $1299 price point was the price for the entry level 4k 21.5" iMac from last year with the intel i3 quad core. This base model seems like a direct replacement for that previous entry level 4k model at the same price point.

Just as you grab the bezel to tilt the display, I press against the chin when inserting cables in the rear ports. That way you’re not leaving fingerprints on the display. Chin ftw!

In specs, its weaker than the mac mini. But when you think about the fact that it comes with great speakers, 4.5k display, great webcam and mic. Keyboard and mice. Including those peripherals, you might end up spending around 700 to get the same package as this

You could put a TB3 dock on the stand of the iMac and connect everything there. This is also how businesses handle flexible work spaces. Plug in one cable to the dock and you're ready to get to work.

I really love this new style Apple has gone with, I do lots of photo editing and am really sad that this design will not be what the larger iMac will look like if rumours are correct, if this had a 30 inch + option I'd buy in a heart beat, I love the colours sooooooooooooo much that I nearly caved and bought one but going from my 4K 40 inch monitor which is perfect for photo editing to 23,5 inch is just to much sadly. I am so glad this Mac has an external power supply and I hope they move the Mini in that direction as well. There is no good reason to have something in the case that generates heat and EM and is the part voted most likely to go kerblooey. And most people will never connect ANYTHING to their iMac with a wire at all, not a keyboard or mouse, not an external drive for Time Machine or other backups; nothing. So the two ports on the base level machine are fine for the customers for whom this machine is for. And any time one of those folks decides they need more ports, they can get a hub. This Mac is not for KZbin tech weasels and pro users who make their living with Final Cut Pro or XCode.

Hey Luke, you’re wrong about the Thunderbolt ports. The USB ports present in the base model are both Thunderbolt but not normal USB type c as you said in the video.

If you're a prosumer and maybe even a professional photographer (maybe a light videographer too), you can get by the limitation of the ports by using Thunderbolt NAS/DAS drives, daisy chained, which any professional should be using anyways for external storage AND backups. I have a 2013 15" MBP, docked to a 27" Thunderbolt Display, which might as well be as capable as a new iMac since the USB ports are only 2.0, FireWire is dead, but thanks to that SINGLE Thunderbolt 2 port, I have a Thunderbay 4 Mini RAID for my Lightroom photo library, and a Thunderbay 4 RAID for backups attached to it.

No. My custom build is hooked up to three 4k monitors and 1 QHD monitor (it has two video cards and are they ever hard to get these days). It also has five terabytes of SSD with room for lots more. I'm waiting for the M1X, any M1X and I'll run two monitors off of it and the other two off the custom build.
