As some folks pointed out, I missed that the microphone holes are on the bottom of the display so I accidentally covered them with the adhesive strips, there's almost always something you're bound to forget about when doing a repair! Use adhesive specifically for a 2019/2020 iMac, or just cut the strips before applying.

 certified technician tip: when servicing any iMac - remove the security bar which lines the bottom of the display enclosure. The reason you were having so much trouble wiggling components out is because the bottom-lining adhesive actually covers the roughly 9 screws holding the security bar in place. Once removed everything slides out with ease. It's also one of the first things we check to see if an iMac has ever had any "unauthorized repairs."

@@BilisNegra i actually hate my job. I have to give so much bad news to customers as a technician in regards to logic board failure resulting in data loss unless they've already backed up their data. i'd much rather end-users be able to actually own the tech that they've already bought. just like any PC owner - you should be able to upgrade your RAM, Storage, GPU, and given the recent shift to Apple Silicon - especially the CPU. I'll always share whatever is helpful.

@@BilisNegra the way Apple and Apple servicing is growing no one will ever lose work / income by sharing such things. It’s only when a technology and market are shrinking that people start trying to project their own nuts. It’s book time for all things Apple. Those of us that DIY would never pay for tech skills if we already have em anyway. Just did an airport / time capsule 8TB upgrade on my kitchen table today. Took about 30mins. Easy when you have the skills.

It seems you broke your microphones at 8:15. Something I want to point out, when you put on the adhesive strips you covered the two microphones in the front, and I suspect that they will sound muffled. The adhesive kit you used is only for 2012-2015, the 2019 and 2020 iMacs have different strips than the one you used. If you want to fix it cut out a bit in the adhesive where the microphones are.

This was quite informative, I just bought a 27 inch iMac, mid tier model with 6 core i5, it performs well, I came from a 2014 model, that I had for 7 years. the only addition I ordered was the 512gb ssd built in, probably did not need it but 5 years from now I may be glad I did, I added a Samsung t7 ssd for my data and remapped the documents, desktop Pictures, music and videos folders to that. I put 64gb of memory in it, and called it done. 2-3 years from now when the processors are cheap and the warranty is gone, I may upgrade the processor, and perhaps someone will come out with a kit to get the internal nvm2d drive working again, But honestly, I think I have about 5 years before my intel iMac will not support the latest OS and I will have to get an apple chip based computer. Shame because I love my intel Mac.

the TDP is the biggest factor... when I was upgrading a 2011 21" which had an i3 , I was tempted to go with the i7 2600 but picked the i7 2600s which had a lower tdp... the 21" case especially,is sensitive to overheating if you go crazy with cpu power and you could easily have a toaster on ur hands with a faster chip that you cant really use... the 2600s worked superbly with low overall temps and 4 cores , 8 threads really helped performance... this imac ,I had ,was the educational version that came with an i3

I have the iMac 2017 and did an upgrade from 4C i5 w/o hyperthreading to the i7 4C with HT. (All 7th gen cpus). It has 512GB and I upgraded the RAM to 40GB (8 stock + I added 32) and has Radeon 580 8GB. You were mad about the hard drive, I was happy with the 512 but need more fast storage as well. I bought an Thunderbolt 3 M.2 enclosure (from sonnet I think?) and put an western digital black 1TB in it. Over 2GB/second speed. Side note, I tried the Samsung 970 but it was slower and had hiccups sometimes, the WD is perfect. I have all my music, tv, iMovie libraries on it, so on the internal drive is only documents and iDevices Backups (can’t source them out easily). Yes maybe a TB3 drive is overkill for mass storage of music and movies. But before the next iOS I do always safe my backup with the old iOS to to this drive and it’s around 200GB so I love the super fast storage.

2 weeks ago, a Lenovo on-site technician came to my place to repair my Lenovo laptop. I asked him about self upgrades. He told me that I can change whichever components I want but I must keep the original components. If the motherboard is broken, they will need to reinstall the original RAM and SSD before running any diagnostics. Without them, they will need longer time to diagnose and help me to make a formal warranty claim... This is nice, because I can go ahead and install a SATA SSD, a faster NVMe SSD, WiFi 6 adapter, more RAM, and new thermal paste without voiding the warranty. That's independent upgrade and repair, right there.

Best advice is get the 27" you can afford, then get the RAM else where and save a bundle! I'm gonna miss user upgradable RAM, I've got a 2012 and the first thing I did was drop 32Gb into it about 5 minutes after opening the box! I've so tempted to get the 2020 and even if it lasts 5 years I figure I'd be ahead of the game just with the RAM savings over the next 27" iMac.

I bought a 2019 iMac (refurbished) for 1599 in 2020 with a core i5-8500. My only real complaint out of the box was that the fusion drive was just plain slow. Boot up time was... well I would go get a cup of coffee and feed the cats before getting on the computer. Yeah that slow. So now it's 2023 and the Core i9, nvme and sata drive prices have dropped to an affordable price. I think it's time for an upgrade. Thanks for this video.

@hastingb Жыл бұрын
Replying to my own post. First of all opening up an iMac is not something that I particularly enjoy doing. That being the case I took the multiple upgrades I wanted to do and combined them into one single project. In this specific case I wanted to upgrade the CPU, NVME drive and the SATA drive. I did go for the I9-9900 processor and a WD 850 2TB SSD NVME drive plus I replaced the Fusion drive with with a WD 2TB SATA SSD drive. It got it all put back together this evening and this thing is an absolute beast. The NVME drive reads and writes at over 3100 MB/s and Cinebench multicore rating of 9457. It's unbelievable how much power was hidden away in this old 2019 computer. Now that this project is complete I have a new perspective on the next generation of Macs. As fast and efficient as the new Apple Silicon systems are, they just don't have the upgradeability that the previous generation had. Good or bad that's just a fact that we Apple fans will have to contend with. Broken hardware will for the most part will have to go back to the factory to have the the logic board completely replaced. Other internals components like screens, keyboards and batteries might still be user replaceable. This will be at the front of my mind when making my next purchase. Instead I'll be skipping the baseline Macs and going with a middle to high end system. Preferably it will be a refurbished or open box system.

6:18 So as the SATA port. I just upgraded my 27 inches Late 2013 iMac recently with i7-4771 and two SSD drives. One NVMe and one SATA. I can’t imagine how tough would it be if I bought this model to replace my current one, because any external drive with high speed and low latency would take one of the thunderbolt ports which I connected both to my monitors.

3 years later, parts arrived and hopefully will do this tomorrow. I wish it was an M processor BUT, I hate that the new iMac's are now 24 instead of 27 so this is my option for now since Fusion is getting a bit slow for me with the i5

Isn't it easier and safer to first remove the RAM through the exterior access panel? No accidental scraping ('chipping') of the chips when removing the motherboard, because the profile is slimmer. Of course, installing the new RAM afterwards.

the capacitors store the rectified voltage form the ac on them. ideally the power probably has bleeder resistors in parallel with those caps. but not always. im not sure if the imac power supply does or not.

I agree with you. A Mac chassis like the Mac Pro, but with prosumer grade hardware rather than pro grade. Compatibility with aftermarket components, and expandability. With AMD processors, or Apple Silicon if it turns out to be good enough. Ditch Intel.

I don't know why KZbin suggested me this video but this reminds me when I upgraded my 21.5" iMac. The reassembly process was going well, I put the display back on without the adhesive strips to test if everything is ok. I pressed the power button and... nothing. I disassembled everything again and restarted each and every step carefully. But still the iMac won't power on. It's already past mid night, I'm pissed off, I have no clue of what's wrong and I'm exhausted. So I said to myself: leave it as is and check everything again the next morning. I pull the power cord from the wall socket and the screen tilts forward... the display falls off. Had I followed the advised at the 7:50 minute mark of this video (tape that damn display when you test), my iMac LCD display would be free from any cracks. Now I laugh about it but that day was awful for me.

I have a 2008 Mac Pro tower in my studio. I just upgraded it a couple of days ago to 32 gig of ram. I’m running High Sierra on it and it works great. I do, however, wish there was a way to put a modern motherboard in it and upgrade it a lot further.

The fact also, that you can actually save money than what you calculated in this video is that the Core i7 configuration came with a 512gb SSD standard for $2299 and plus at least $200 for 32x2 64gb of RAM for a total of 72gb of RAM (or sell your original 8gb RAM to save even more). All these without voiding your warranty.

I bought the 8 core version, and it's a Marvell!!, I love it, just buy the TOP BASED 2020 27" IMAC and buy the Ram from your favorite tech supplier and that's it!, but there is one thing that you didn't address, could you add an extra SSD in the empty slots? are the SATA CABLE AND POWER unsoldered?
@W1ldTangent
@W1ldTangent 4 жыл бұрын
I think it's at least theoretically possible you could solder on the connector for an SSD (assuming you can find it, doesn't Apple use something proprietary for their removable drives?) and use it for a storage drive, but you cannot boot MacOS on a T2 system from anything but the integrated flash as far as I am aware.
