If Apple is announcing this now roughly a month before WWDC, then whatever they will be announcing in WWDC must be huge, considering that FCP and Logic Pro is one of the most requested features for the iPad for years

They are probably clearing runtime for the headset. There would be no reason other than that. They are probably gonna speedrun the iOS/iPadOS changes and they see this as a major part of reducing runtime so they can focus on the headset and possibly the other new rumored hardware. Sadly my 2020 iPad Pro isn't making the Cut for this release even though Logic-ally it should work just fine (Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro puns 100% intended).

People just don't want to pay up front for software anymore. This is backed up by telemetry and user surveys. They will happily pay much MORE for the same product, via a small monthly subscription, than fork out for a larger one-time purchase. So SAAS is here to stay. My company used to sell their product for a single one off fee, old school. We had big sales campaigns around Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas etc. Lots of promotions. Tie ins with competitions, application bundles, the latest trending media etc. The product was highly regarded and reviewed but the sales were barely enough to break even. When we switched to a subscription model, long time users complained and threatened to move to free software, but revenues jumped UP by an order of magnitude amongst newer users. Now we do next to no marketing and are doing better than ever. We should have moved to a SAAS model years ago. I personally hate subscriptions but the vast majority of people, objectively, prefer them.

@@kirishima638 It’s becoming death by a thousand cuts with everything going subscription based. What the CEOs, execs, and app developers fail to realise is that subscriptions only generate steady revenue when customers have steady disposable income, and when times get tough subscriptions are one of the first things to get the axe. When people start trimming expenses, some of these more niche subscriptions aren’t gonna make the cut.

As a an Apple Certified audio professional who uses Logic Pro professionally on a daily basis for producing and mixing the content on my channel, my albums and for my clients, I firmly believe in ownership and being able to upgrade products when I see fit. This trend of subscriptions happened first with Adobe, then Avid then Waves and now Apple. I have always been and remain a fan of Apple but if the option for purchasing software was ever removed, then I would have no need the product. If others want to continue this path and allow companies to take more and more power out of the hands of their customers, then that is their prerogative but I will stand my ground firmly when I say I will not invest in any subscription-only platform. We already have to pay for utilities, we do not need any more subscriptions. I will not allow any trends in the industry to dictate my decisions. I still buy CDs & DVDs, I do not believe in music streaming services either. I own my home, my car, my computer, my music, my daw, my plugins and that is not ever going to change. Having said that, I am happy to see that Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro have made it to the iPad. The only thing holding these new apps back are their subscription-only model.

@@AlexanderLindo Absolutely! One of the very reasons why I LOATHE paying for Sibelius. It angers me every time the bill comes around-I can't believe I'm giving Avid MORE MONEY. I am in complete agreement with you on all fronts, 100%. But yet, I've been convinced by the music industry as a whole to pay for these subscriptions, because "it's what everyone else uses." I don't know what else to say besides it angers me, and that I agree with you 100%.

I would expect the Mac version to gain parity with the iPad versions effects and such, as Apple says you can take your projects to the Mac, so they'd have to work the same. My worry is that, to gain that parity, you'll have to subscribe to the new version of Final Cut Pro.

I think you’ll be surprised what the A12 based iPads will accomplish in Logic. Audio workloads tend to be largely reliant on single thread performance until you start adding lots of tracks, so theoretically any track with a plugin chain that runs on the A12X/Z should work fine on the non pro iPads. I wouldn’t want to edit a large multi track project on one but that’s as much to do with the small screen as it is performance.

I suspect that they made these new versions with Mac Catalyst in mind. So this new interface for Final Cut and Logic will be coming to Macs as well. But both new Mac apps will have the subscription pricing. They'll keep Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro around for awhile for those who want to keep the pre-paid version (and until all features have transferred). Adobe did something similar as they were transitioning to CC several years ago.

Thanks! THIS IS NOT FINAL CUT FOR IPAD - they might say it is - it kinda looks like it is - BUT ITS A COMPLETELY DIFFERNET APP - you can NOT start a project in FCP (MAC) and open it in FCP(iPAD) - all third party plugins have been re created and re paid for - because they are not for this APP - they did NOT bring Final CUT From the MAC to the iPad - they created a COMPLETELY NEW APP - and called it Final Cut and made it for the iPad - Luma Fusion has as much relationship with Final Cut on the Mac - as Final Cut (iPad) - does to FCP on the Mac - and just the fact that I even have to type FCP for MAC and FCP for IPAD is already PROOF they are TWO DIFFERENT APPS! Speak the truth - Spread the word - They did not BRING FINAL CUT TO IPAD!!

This is all well and good - but how do you get your footage onto it to edit quickly? Compared to say a MacBook Pro there is no SD card slot and it only has one USB Slot. It is likely to cost a fortune to get an iPad with enough storage space to edit on. So editing from an external hard drive is going to be a nightmare - as the process of copying from your SD card to an external hard drive will be painful - especially as the File Manager is so poor. It is just one of those apps to drive sales of the declining iPad again. People will most likely keep using (or revert to) MacBooks after they have worked out how disappointing this will be to use and slows down their workflows.
@brightboxstudio
@brightboxstudio Жыл бұрын
Have you tried it? I sometimes do this workflow for photos, and sure it was a pain with Lightning iPads with their limited bus power, but with the USB-C iPads it’s like a computer. First, pick up one of those compact, cheap bus-powered USB-C hubs that are all over Amazon, the ones that have an SD slot and additional ports like USB, Ethernet, audio…. Plug that into the iPad and now you just put your SD card in its hub slot and your SSD into a hub USB port, and they are both connected to the iPad at once. Both show up in the Locations panel of the Files app, so then just Split View two Files windows side by side, and like on the desktop, either drag and drop or copy and paste to transfer the card files to whatever folder you wanted on the iPad. That’s all: Plug them in, open two windows, drag and drop. What is so “painful” about that?

With the sub model it begs the question how does it compare to the iPad version of Davinci Resolve that has a one time fee of $95? Considering BlackMagic has made their licenses good for all new versions at least for the desktop version it seems like the two definitely need to be compared as two years of Final Cut on iPad is $5 more than basically a lifetime Davinci Resolve license on iPad unless at some point BlackMagic changes their business model. Their current CEO though has made it known that he sees the software and its pricing as the key to getting people to buy into their hardware. It is their gateway item so to speak.

Personally I think that apple should’ve done this years ago accompanying their “PRO” iPads. I never understood what made these iPads Pro, without having professional apps that would use the full potential of these machines. Having said that, Apple will still need to breach the plugin gap to deliver on the full experience. The AUv3 plugins I have on iPadOS can’t be used on my Mac and the AU/VSTs I have on my Mac won’t run on iPad. Thus far I have yet to meet a professional producer that is totally fine using the stock instruments and effect from logic as a restriction. Unless this is fixed, I don’t see many people working with this once the hype is over.

Be interesting to see how it works in the real world. My concerns are the small screen size for app that use a screen real estate. The Apple will be selling iPad with a lot more storage because those apps have a lot of support libraries especially Logic. Then Logic recording music typically uses outboard gear for audio interfaces and such and only one port on the iPad and I sure the iPad will need power connected to power external gear. I bet the companies making hubs for iPad are smiling about now. Then iPadOS isn't great at file handling so that another thing that could be a bottleneck. So real world use will be interesting.

They KILLED It before it was released. From Apple: "Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad will each be available on the App Store for $4.99 (US) per month or $49 (US) per year with a one-month free trial". $50 a year! No Way!!!! I just canceled my Adobe subscription because I was tired of paying over $60 a month for software I only used for one client who I no longer work fore. All the others, I use FCP or Resolve Studio. Both of which I have paid $300, ONCE. I will stick for travel FCP using my trusty MacBook Air M1 which I already own. Even though I have a iPad Pro M2, I can always use Resolve on the iPad if I need editing as it was a free download. Hope it stays that way.
