I've been looking for a detailed Saturn repair video like this! I've got a North American Model 1 that I've been working on. I had to use a computer jumper to trick the door switch connector since it always came up as "Drive door open". Jumper worked, but now it says "Drive empty". Plus the laser and drive motor are both noisy. Motor is a bit squeaky. Luke, do you have any other tutorials or tips for the Saturn that can help me out?? Thanks!

Hi! I just got a saturn that powers up, spin and read the disc but the screen starts and stay black, also no sound and the disc never stop spining. It has a new laser but I'm sure its not laser related because it should start with the laser board unplugged and it does't do that. I replaced some caps and re solder all the av output pins but no luck yet. any pointers? Thanks in advance!!

I recently picked up a model 1 Japanese Sega Saturn. It doesn't work. It loads up to the welcome screen but it won't read disks. I moved the laser out to the end as you did in this video and when I fire up the machine, the laser moves. The disk doesn't spin though. That's not the only problem. The welcome screen turns into a solid flashing screen. I noticed that the flashing started when I close the CD lid. I know you can't diagnose the problem without having the machine in hand. I was just wondering if you think this could be fixed with a new laser or if you think I should just pick up a new Saturn. I'd like to salvage this one as I hate to see a classic like this not being used anymore. However I can't afford to sink a lot of money into it. I'm guessing the problem is more than the laser, but I'm not at your skill level when it comes to electronic repairs. I was just wondering if you ever encountered the problem before and if you had any advise for me. BTW I live in the USA. Thanks!

I would usually check if the disc hub is at the correct height before attempting to adjust the laser pot. A lot of the time through years of use the hub will be seated too low for the laser to pick up. I fixed at least 8 Saturns that wouldn't spin the disc by just reseating it while using a flathead screwdriver to keep it from going to far down. Are you interested in any broken Saturns or parts?

Hey ***** I still have my Saturn that I purchased just after launch, which has been kept in a pristine condition (although used regularly) its whole life (Stored in box when not in use). Just over a year ago, after having not used it for a couple of years, I tried booting it up, only to have the same problem your Victor Saturn was displaying. The laser and cogs move freely and there is absolutely no cleaning that needs doing- It looks as though it has just been manufactured. Which leads me to conclude that my laser has also gone. So my query is, where can I purchase a replacement laser from (this is a PAL system)? How much will this cost me (that's not a big issue-just so I have an idea)? Also is there any chance you could upload a video showing how to do this? Cheers

@clubconsoles9 жыл бұрын
Yusuf Badat Try checking the av cable and trying a different one and cleaning the connectors, otherwise its probably a GPU (Graphics processing unit) and sound chip problem. Also try checking that the game disk doesn't have any dirt or scratches on and check it isn't your TV. i would also suggest trying different games and seeing if they also have the problem. Cant really suggest anything else. Hope this helps. Also it could be something to do with poor modding. What mods did it have?
@yusufbadat6189 жыл бұрын
I've tried another tv but no luck. Also tried a different scart lead but still won't work. The mod it has will allow it to copy games and that's the only one that I'm aware of. Got a feeling it's a gpu issue.. any solutions of how this can be fixed if it is a gpu fault?
@clubconsoles9 жыл бұрын
Yusuf Badat The only thing i could suggest is getting a new gpu (From a broken saturn) and de soldering the old one and soldering the new one in. If you dont have any skills on opening a console i would just get it replaced or get a refund and buy a diffrent one.

Hi. I've got a PAL sega saturn with a strange fault and i've been unsucessfull in finding a reason/solution for this fault anywhere online. You seem quite knowledgable when it comes to saturn consoles so i wonder if you could shed some light on this issue. I power it up and at first it runs, no problem. But when it gets warm (usually after about half hour later) it starts to malfunction. The saturn will fail to spin/read the disc, and the video will start to distort. There are wobbly horizontal lines, kind of like an old vcr. If i leave the saturn to cool down then try again, it will read discs again as normal until it gets warm again then the fault repeats. Any info on this would be much appriciated. Many thanks.

Victor (JVC) made the Drives for the Sega Saturn. And because that they got a license from Sega to make their on Saturn. The Main Difference between the Normal Sega Saturn and the Victor Saturn is their design and Components. And Rockman is actually Megaman

Hi. I have a japanese Saturn (a very rare I believe Made in the Philippines). It's port 1 is busted. I have a Saturn 3D controller but oddly enough it only works on Virtua Cop 1 and not on the game it was designed for which is Nights Into Dreams. I tried switching the + and 0 switch on the 3D controller. The only game I can play with the 3D controller is Virtua Cop 1. It may be the port, though I'm not sure why it works ok with just the Virtua Cop 1 game (all my games are orig. It doesn't work on Biohazard, Nights Into Dreams, Grandia strangely enough with the switch on + mode or 0, as mentioned). If it's not the port, any way to fix this strange problem. Note that even though I have a Sega Saturn light gun, on the same port, port 2, when I calibrate it on Virtua Cop 1, hit the trigger, the bullets would be all over randomly on the target are even though I'm not moving it from the Bull's eye. I'm using a PC CRT monitor which works ok with House of the Dead 2 on the Dreamcast. Thank you in advance. God bless, Rev. 21:4

Daniel Withoeft I haven't found any that does that, I don't think there is a way for that, but I have seen mods where they install a chip and it makes it capable of playing the Japanese games, they should make a new chip that has ram as well so we can mod it for that and more.

Sega sourced its parts from Hitachi (CPUs), and Victor (JVC) (CD-ROM drive) I believe did the same. I think in an effort to reduce their costs, Sega licensed the production of the Saturn hardware so that they'd cut them a deal on orders of parts to manufacture the Saturn. Functionally they should be the same, it's mainly their aesthetics. Although I think both Victor/JVC and Hitachi made their own versions of the MPEG card but i'm not sure if either or of them packaged it with their system as incentive to buy their "version" of the Saturn versus the regular Sega one.

Nice job man, I just bought two broken Saturns a few weeks ago and it turns out that the first one I bought only needed the cd spindle to be popped back up into place the second one which came with a 3d controller and a game was missing a fuse and wouldn't power on even with a fuse so I'm probably just going to use it for spare parts.

Hi there, great videos, I enjoy watching them. I've been repairing consoles for a number of years now but I have an issue I can't figure out. Basically I have a mk2 Saturn that loads game fine but crashes when I go to actually play the game from the title menus. Sega Rally for example, once I've gone through the game menus and am ready to play it will freeze just before the game play commences, same with Wipeout. these are the only games I have for testing and they work fine on my other Saturn's I've repaired. I've put three different laser assemblys in and three different power supplies but the same thing happens! any ideas?? cheers
