One quick clarification - Nebraska had been a member of the AAU since 1909, but was consistently ranked near the bottom of AAU members year in and year out. They had spent time making themselves far more suitable for B1G membership by enhancing their standing within the AAU, but had in fact been members beforehand. This doesn't change the fact they were voted out in 2011, but as Iowa State can attest to, AAU membership really doesn't mean all that much other than the types of research you do. ISU is a world class agricultural research university and voluntarily dropped their AAU status to become even better at it. I know Husker brass is trying to get back into the AAU, but personally I think they should take a page from the Cyclones' book and focus their academic improvements elsewhere. Be world-class at something unique, not elite at something a hundred other schools are also elite at.

Let’s just say it how it is…Texas had spent decades gatekeeping A&M from the AAU, claiming Ag research wasn’t important enough for membership. Nebraska was an AAU member for over 100 years primarily because of their Medical Center. Once they officially left the Big XII, the university of Texas spearheaded Nebraska’s removal from the AAU…mostly out of pettiness. It is not a coincidence a 100 year member gets voted out the same year they left Texas’s conference.

Much of Nebraska's AAU credentials came in their world-class agriculture programs. Just after Nebraska joined the Big Ten, the AAU decided to lower the weight given to agricultural programs, as if agricultural research isn't important, and also discounted Nebraska's medical school from their score because it was in Omaha, a separate campus, and not Lincoln. The combination of these two factors led the AAU to kick out Nebraska, an action that in my opinion was crap and lowered the standing of the AAU. It's not like the AAU actually does anything to help a school's academics or research, unlike the Big Ten Academic Alliance or its predecessor, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (Big Ten plus U of Chicago). Sharing between Big Ten universities academically is strong and seamless: I don't think academic cooperation is as strong in any other conference, not even the Ivy League. Need a book to do a paper but you're at Michigan State and the only book is at Northwestern? No problem. Need funds for a research project? There might be some help from another Big Ten university or more importantly, you can pool your resources with your counterpart department at another Big Ten school. Need help with a research project? Other Big Ten institutions should be your first stop after local resources. And even in this online era, research cooperation between Big Ten universities is stronger than in other conferences. The Big Ten is much more than just an athletic conference.
@wnorton8 ай бұрын
I think you mean a *correction*. You said Nebraska "bull rushed their way" to AAU membership, "rushing the qualifications for admission," when in fact at the time of admission to the B1G they had been members of the AAU for over a century -- longer than a number of existing B1G members. That's not a clarification. You made a factually incorrect statement.

In the B1G, ice hockey draws bigger crowds, has more expensive tickets, features more successful (past and present) B1G teams, and is generally a far bigger deal than baseball. B1G hockey arenas seat between 6k-16k, and they very frequently sell out. Most B1G baseball stadiums are under 2k. From fall of 2001-present, there have been about 10 months when the most-attended hockey game (we're talking pro, college, Olympic, international) to date WASN'T a game between B1G schools.

Starting the Notre Dame chapter in the 1990s is a disservice to the history. Notre Dame was denied entry into the Big Ten multiple times in the 20th century, largely due to discrimination and Fielding Yost's personal hatred (Michigan even organized boycotts of ND). It was only when Notre Dame became profitable with it's revolutionary TV deal (and when it was no longer socially acceptable to exclude Catholics) that the Big Ten was interested. At that point, being an independent program (forced upon them) was not only a core identity but an advantage. Notre Dame played a national schedule - and built the only truly national brand to this day - and did not want to be regionalized to the midwest.

Michigan, on it's Point-A-Minute run under Fielding Yost, wasn't having that. As a Carolina fan and student, I (and the vast majority of UNC fans) would definitely prefer to land in the SEC than the B1G. Geographically, the SEC makes much more sense, and we were one of three ACC schools (along with FSU and Clemson) to vote against the addition of Stanford, Cal, and SMU to the ACC, so I don’t think we’d want to join a conference with west coast members. Additionally, we have significantly more history with SEC teams. Kentucky is our second biggest rival in basketball, and we have a pretty heated football rivalry with South Carolina. Academically the Big Ten makes more sense, as we’re an AAU school and a public ivy, but I don’t think joining the SEC would hurt us at all in the academic department.

#GoBlue Appreciate the video I'm still mad that my home state school of UMD joined the big 10 rutgers shouldn't be there either so obviously i was upset when the west coast joined To me the best thing about college sports were the regional rivalries and that shit is dead

Did I miss something with the football titles? You said Minnesota was the only school to win 3 straight titles immediately after saying Michigan won 4 straight?

Love the videos, easily one of the best youtubers out right now. Keep grinding and I could see this being a huge channel. Keep up the great work and happy holidays

Notre Dame...they have to be football independent, but conference membership is fine for every other sport.

I thought Notre Dame hockey joined the B1G… if that gets covered later in the video, never mind! (Edit, you did cover it!)

What's the third sport you're referring to when you say Big 3 men's sports? Football and basketball obviously, but I would say there's a big drop off between those 2 and the next one. And if I had to pick a next sport, I would say baseball which Nebraska and Maryland have each won 2 conference titles in, with both of them looking to be serious contenders again this year.

If UCLA and USC are joining the Big Ten, it only makes sense for Cal and Stanford to join as well. It bothers me how they only invited the SoCal schools, but neither NoCal schools. It’s like there’s a big gap on the West Coast that needs to be filled. Plus, from what I’ve read, the NoCal schools have better academics than their Southern counterparts.
