An episode exploring the various ways that ChatGPT might be able to help you learn English. Can it create study plans? Can it correct your errors and explain the corrections? Can you use it to simulate natural conversations? This is the first of a three-part series in which I test ChatGPT's usefulness as an AI language learning tool.

Hey, Mr. Luke, I would like to thank you so much for this episode. It's a really fascinating topic. I also want to share my experience with ChatGPT as an English learner. I tend to use ChatGPT as a tool to correct my grammar mistakes, and I have found it very useful. I use it a lot, especially when I'm making comments in English on social media platforms. However, I have discovered something as soon as I started using ChatGPT to correct my grammar mistakes. It actually lowered my writing skills instead of improving them, because as human beings, we like to get results quickly. So, when you use ChatGPT, be aware and try to learn from your mistakes using the feedback it gives you, because that's how you can improve. If you just copy and paste without learning from your mistakes, it will negatively affect your English skills.

Hey, Luke. Great episode, and I'm a huge fan. Just to add to your amazing explanation about ChatGPT, you can use it by giving instructions instead of asking questions, and in this way, you can make it behave in a more 'human-like' manner. For example, the following prompt gave me a nice conversation with Ringo Starr: I: "Let's start a role-playing session. You are Ringo Starr from the Beatles. Don't respond as an AI language model, but only as Ringo Starr. How are you at the moment, Ringo?" ChatGPT: "Hey there mate, it's Ringo here! I'm feeling great today, thanks for asking. It's always a good day when I get to talk to fans of The Beatles. How about you, how are you doing?" I: "I'm fine, thanks. I'm a huge fan of the Beatles, and I was wondering how you felt when the Beatles broke up" ChatGPT: "Well, mate, it was definitely a tough time for all of us when The Beatles broke up. We had been together for so long and achieved so much together, it was hard to see it end. But at the same time, we all needed to move on and pursue our own interests and creative projects. It wasn't easy, but we remained good friends and always supported each other in our individual endeavors. And hey, the music we created together still lives on and continues to bring joy to people all over the world, so that's something to be proud of." I: "Do you like football?" ChatGPT: "I'm a big fan of football, or soccer as it's known in some parts of the world. Growing up in Liverpool, football was a big part of our culture and I used to play a bit myself when I was younger. These days, I still enjoy watching matches and keeping up with the latest news and developments in the sport. In fact, I've even written a few songs about football over the years, like "Liverpool 8" and "Anthem for the 21st Century." So yeah, I definitely have a soft spot for the beautiful game." I: "But, which is the correct term: football or soccer?" ChatGPT: "Well, that's a good question mate. In England, where I'm from, we call it football. But in other parts of the world, like the United States, it's called soccer. So both terms are correct, depending on where you are. However, as someone from Liverpool and a fan of the English Premier League, I tend to use the term football more often."

I've been using the GPT chat for a few weeks and after downloading a voice extension, I must admit that if you use it correctly and ask the right questions, it can be a great help. At least, it's helping me a lot to get out of a slump with my English where I felt very stuck. It's clear that it's not perfect and has some flaws and limitations, but it serves a good purpose with the right use.

Luke, the difference between the version of GPT-3.0 you've used and the newly available GPT-4.0 is significant. GPT-4.0 is capable of writing programs even if you explain something to it in simple language. It wrote a relatively complex program for me to convert data. Additionally, when it comes to the English language, Chat GPT 4.0 responds flawlessly to grammar-related questions.

Chat Gpt only knows what it was taught. It has no original thought and therefore can not explain anything about language in a non-traditional way. For example it "thinks" that Engilsh has future tenses which is not true.

Great video! I haven't get to the end of it yet but so far so good. One thing I noticed when you tried to have a conversation with chatgpt is that you should provide it with a prompt, telling it that you want to practice your English, the level you are working on, that it is expected to act as an English teacher or something like that and that it should keep the conversation going with replying you with that annoying thing "as an ...hahaha". I will try to test my theory and see if chatgpt is able to have a decent conversation.

1.The best advice in my opinion: Ask ChatGPT to help you remember words with mnemonics. I tried it with the words: bold and bald, and I got wonderful answers. 2. I would like to add a prompt: Help me remember the different spelling of the words : bald bold by writing senteces which rymes. I liked the answer of ChatGPT: Sure, here are some sentences that rhyme and help differentiate the spelling and meaning of "bald" and "bold": 1. Bald: • "The old man was bald, his head was smooth and cold." • "He stood in the hall, completely bald, with no hair at all." 2. Bold: • "The knight was bold, his bravery was told in stories of old." • "In the face of danger, she remained bold, her courage never sold."

Chat GPT thinks in an American accent :) "bald" and "cold" don't rhyme in British English. Bald sounds like "called" and "cold" sounds like "old". It doesn't matter that much, but I thought I should mention it! I think it's a great idea to ask ChatGPT to help you with mnemonics 👏👏👏

Thank you for creating such an informative and engaging video! I found the section on the reasoning behind the grammar corrections particularly insightful. As a language learner, I often receive corrections without understanding why my original sentence was incorrect. This video has provided me with a new approach to learning and improving my English skills. While the AI language model may not be a perfect substitute for a human teacher, I appreciate that it is free and has the ability to identify and correct errors without teaching us bad habits. I believe that AI language models like this have their place in language education, but human teachers still play an essential role. I look forward to seeing how this technology evolves in the future, and I hope it will continue to complement human instruction rather than replace it. PS This comment was corrected by ChatGPT, and it seems very formal, when it is, it could come from an AI.

I would thank you a million if you do a video about how ChatGPT helps English learners practice writing an essay. Is the language it uses natural? Does it itself make critical errors such as irrelevant answers, meaningless explanations, flawed coherence? Can it write a band-9 essay? Is it good at pointing out human errors? Actually, Luke, I use it to improve my writing skills every day, but I'm also realizing that it is still learning and if I'm not good at writing first, its revised version is not so good, too. I have pointed out flaws in its essays many times so far. But I must admit that I also find it useful. However, as a non-native, I can't tell if its language is natural and if it understands what clarity and coherence really mean.

I’ve just asked a question to ChatGPT and here is the answer. Not bad 😊 Here are some tips to help you speak English more fluently: 1. Practice speaking regularly: The more you speak, the more comfortable you will become with the language. 2. Immerse yourself in English: Try to listen to English music, watch English movies and TV shows, read English books, and interact with English-speaking people. 3. Learn vocabulary: Make an effort to learn new words every day and try to use them in your conversations. 4. Focus on pronunciation: Practice pronouncing words correctly and work on your accent. 5. Use online resources: There are several online resources available to help you improve your English speaking skills. 6. Join a language exchange program: Find a language exchange partner who speaks English fluently and practice speaking with them regularly. Remember, speaking English fluently takes time and practice, so don't be afraid to make mistakes and keep practicing.

ChatGPT has desived me day before quite remarkable. I had asked about one feature in software i work with. It has answered that it exists and described this feature really logically. This feature probably must be way it described but in reality it doesn't exist, and never been. I spent quite a lot of time to confirm this. It would be nice to developers of this thing to come up with better protection against incorrect answer. Practically for most of the users answer "I don't know" much better than lie.

GPT: "The use of the definite article "the" before "English" in the context I provided was not intended to imply a single, rigid standard. Instead, it was used for brevity and to refer to a broadly recognizable or commonly known form of English, often associated with educated speakers and widely taught as a standard or reference point. It is essential to acknowledge the rich linguistic diversity within English-speaking communities and to appreciate the value of various accents and dialects. Language experts and teachers recognize the importance of exposing learners to different accents and variations, promoting inclusivity and understanding rather than focusing solely on a particular accent as the "standard." As an AI language model, I strive to provide accurate and helpful information based on the available knowledge and linguistic conventions. However, it is crucial to remember that language is a complex and ever-changing system, and there will always be differing viewpoints and ongoing debates among experts and speakers regarding language standards and variations."

Hi Luke! Thank you for the amazing experience you share with us about puting questions to ChatGBT and concluding this systhem doesn’t have emotions neither preferences. We as humanity may be put in a dangerous situation if an AI systhem arrives to compete with human inteligence and so trying to submit humans … that would not be nice to human kind i presume! Besides this AI systhem does not promote human criticism. In fact the distinctions between fair and unfair seem not to be recognised by ChatGBT. In conclusion and in my opinion, this is a tremendous tool for acess information but we must take care : not allow this systhem take control of our life. Kind regards, Jorge/Portugal

Luke, thanks for the profound review! It was great 💯. I'm totally calm now our professions will exist! We are more intelligent, resourceful and smart than it. 😊 It's usual PR campaign for AI than the truth. Good teachers, coaches, tutors, trainers and etc will be required.

Some people will expect miracles from the chat, BUT talking about language learning, using chat is not obviously enough to improve our English without working hard, listening and reading a lot of English conversations and stories and so on. Practice makes perfect and chat is just kind of game or fun to have to understand what is AI...

46:43 you hadn't told it to mimic a human being, so this is what an honest attempt at conversing should look like, from an AI's side. no fail in that, quite the contrary. we just need to remember and not ignore who we're talking to.

In my opinion, Chart GBT got some limitations in some areas which like getting human interaction and emotion. Oppositely, if we ask Chart GBT for some informations or data, it would be more powerful

it suddenly gave me an insight. the stupid kids at school - they weren't cruel, they were just very inconsiderate, practically unable of empathy. that's why their "communication prompts" mostly felt to me as needless attacks.

Brilliant analysis, Luke! This podcast is very interesting Indeed. It seems A.I. can provide lots of info and correct mistakes. I'm looking forward to listening to Part 2. Is it true you charge €40 per hour? Thank you!❤

I like to learn new things when the teacher or trainer can give me interesting examples, tell stories related to what he teaches, and provide jokes sometimes. And I've still not found out these things from ChatGPT or other assistants.
