When it moved to 401-4 it meant 2 additional batsmen got out, remember there's another batsman at the other end with Lara (his partner) so it is the other batsmen that got out when they were facing a ball or over.

When batsmen run between wickets they swap who faces the next ball - unless it's the 6th ball of a legal over, in which case the batsman facing will face the next bowler from the other side on the next ball. The way you read the score at first was correct - the number of wickets were going up because Lara's partners were getting out while he just couldn't put a foot wrong. It's also not really usual for scores to get that high, even in test matches, but if you've got "unlimited" overs to use, use them. ODI's (limited to 50 overs) usually see scores in the high 200's to 300's for them to be competitive, but T20 games have also reached the 300 score mark. Lara was an outstanding batsman and deserves every accolade he's ever received. Truly one of the greats.

About batting partners: There must always be two batsmen on the field at any given time. That's why even though teams have 11 players, you only need to take 10 wickets (get 10 people out) to end an innings, because the last guy doesn't have anyone to bat with anymore. Secondly there are two ways to change who faces the next ball: 1. Running. Literally running between the ends of the pitch. If you hit the ball and run once or three times (scoring 1 or 3 runs) before the ball is returned to the keeper or bowler, you will end up at the other end of the pitch, meaning your partner now faces the next ball. If you run twice, you will end up back where you started and face the next ball yourself. 2. End of an over. Every set of 6 balls is called an 'over' as you know. At the end of each over, the bowling team will now bowl from the other end of the pitch, while the batsmen stay put. So yes, while Brian Lara was in there, still going, he didn't face every ball and his partners were getting out around him.

@6:46. He did not break his own record. He had a record of highest score of 375, which he achieved in Apr 1994. In Oct 2003 Matthew Hayden of Australia broke his record by scoring 380. Six months later in Apr 2004 Brian Lara broke Hayden's record - during this march - by 400* and regained the status of highest individual score in test cricket. Its almost 20 years now. The record stands.

Highest score in international test cricket was made by Sri Lanka when they scored 952-6(where 8 batters scored these runs of which 6 batters got out and other 2 batters remained not out during Sri Lanka innings) against India in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1997

You were right in your understanding of the scoreboard, but teams bat in pairs. So it was the other batsmen of the partnership that had got out. Edit: Just seen that you worked it out later in the vid :)

It's not 401 not out but 400. You had scoring correct e g. 400 runs for 2 wickets (outs). But Lara scored 501 runs not out First Class (club) Cricket. Lara is only Batsman who has scores 100s, 200s, 300s, 400 and 500.

2 wickets or two outs. Everywhere apart from Oceana they say "A hundred and forty six for two" for 146-2 which is the team score. The 401* was his eventual individual score within the team total . Scores over 400 for a team are seen as very competitive in cricket.

Basically the best way to compare is that in Baseball runs are are rare and outs are common whereas the opposite applies in cricket. You have ten outs over two innings each in Test Cricket with no last man stand. You either bat until your team is out or you decide to finish. In the final innings of the game you either win by batting scoring runs and reaching the combined innings target or if the other teams get all of you out. There is a time limit too, so if a result isn't finished by the end of time a Test Cricket match is declared a draw,

You need to react to the most dominant sportsman of all time- Don Bradman. Australia's greatest ever batsman averaged 99.94 in test match cricket. For context that is almost DOUBLE Brian Lara's career average and he played into his 40's. Oh and he was also knighted by the Queen..Sir Donald Bradman. Pride of a nation.

Lara was such a joy to watch ❤ and really had to carry an enormous burden of responsibility for the WI. Yes, they still had some amazing bowlers in Ambrose and Walsh, but far too often Lara was doing the majority of the batting for the whole team. He must have had phenomenal concentration to keep on going, hours and days, against some incredible bowling attacks. And on top of this he was also a very good slip fielder, and took a lot of catches. So much respect for him.

You are right the first time 404-4 is 404 runs scored for 4 wickets (Outs). In this case Lara came into bat at 33?-1 and continued to bat while the other batsman got themselves out. Test scores for innings range widely from a low of 26 to a high 900+ runs, but commonly you would see scores between 300 and 400 runs, but that all depends on the pitch and overhead conditions, a good batting wicket on a warm and sunny day you can see 400 to 600 runs scored. Over the 5 day of the test match the wicket changes due to wear and tear, the sun, etc and the ball can do funny things that is why commonly most teams will choose bat first to get the best condition on the second innings, but this not always the case.

570 runs is extremely rare. To be perfectly honest teams usually declare (voluntarily stop their innings) around the 500 mark because if you keep playing on, you take time out of the game that you need to get the other team out twice. And yes you are correct the other batters are called his batting partners. If Lara scores a single or a 3, the other batter would be on strike. Also at the end of an over, the bowlers switch ends but the batters do not. Hence you would be bowling at the guy at the other side of the pitch. These videos highlighting just one batter is just skipping all the deliveries to the other guy as well but they are facing a lot of balls and scoring runs too. It is possible but rare for example that an opening batsman never gets out and bats with the whole rest of the team and they all get out. This is called "carrying the bat". Only an opener can "carry their bat". Also Lara did not break his own record. Matt Hayden (380) from Australia beat Lara's 375 and so Lara regained the record passing Matt Hayden's score. A test usually has I think 6 hours of play per day for up to 5 days. They take 2 breaks per day of 40 minutes and 20 minutes for lunch and tea respectively. They will also have mini breaks on the field for drinks according to the weather I believe so a couple of minutes for a quick gatorade or whatever. You try to fit 4 team innings in that time so that puts Lara's minutes played into perspective.

Brian Lara is my favourite batsman in my lifetime. Definitely the best I have seen. He made it look so effortless some times, was able to manipulate fields to leave a gap just where he wanted there to be one and this innings was historical but it still irks me that he should've out caught behind where he hit the cover off it and was given not out very early in his innings

In the first innings of a test match it’s common to see scores of 300-400, and that’s usually a pretty good score. At the height of Australia’s dominance from the late 90s to the mid 2000s, it was not uncommon to see scores of 500 and sometimes 600+ runs.

Lara was actually taking his record back, he had broken the long standing record of Gary Sobers ten years before, but the Australian Matthew Hayden had posted a higher score. Both of Lara's innings were scored on the same ground, against the same opponants, England. On the batting. The batsmen facing changes in two ways, firstly if a batsmen runs one or three, they will have changed ends. But also every 6 balls they change bowlers and the hew bowler bowls from the other end, with all the fielders switching round, at whichever batsmen is at that end. So there aren't any set turns for batsmen, it is who is facing depending on the play, this means that trying to manipulate the strike can be a tactic of the game.

It's a test match which is the longest format of the game. So scores can be bigger than other formats of the game. But yes 570 is not that common. Usually 350-450 is a normal 1st innings score in a test format depending on pitch and playing condition. Some pitches are really good for batting and some are not.

For many years the World Record for the highest runs scored by a batsman was held by another West Indian named Sir Garfield Sobers and it was 365., made against Pakistan in 1958. In the intervening years before 1997 many batsmen got close scoring 300 plus but none got to or past 365. It was Lara in 1997 who finally broke the record scoring 375 against England. In 2003 Australian Matthew Hayden scored 380 , against Zimbabwe, taking the record away from Lara . Then in 2004 Lara scored 401 not out taking back his record which has now stood for 20 years. As an added fact of interest Lara has also scored the highest individual first class cricket score of 501 not out playing for Warwickshire against Durham in the English County cricket league, in 1994.

So when the score says 576-5 That means that the windies (west indies) have scored a total of 576 runs at the cost of 5 wickets (or outs)) Laras contribution to that total was 300 runs hence why he is celebrating a triple century

Every time a batter scores one, three or theoretically any odd number of runs, he or she necessarily winds up at the bowler's end, so it was the batters taking his place "at bat" during these times (or when the bowling switches ends at the conclusion of each over) that were getting dismissed. I believe Lara's actual score was 400 not out but he also scored 501 not out in a non-international game, which may have led to the confusion. The test match record had stood at 365 not out for decades. In 1958, West Indian left-hander Gary Sobers broke the 20-year-old record of 364 previously held by Englishman Len Hutton but West Indies immediately then declared (retired the team) in the interest of achieving a result since the idea is to allow sufficient time to bowl out your opposition twice to win the game. After Lara broke Sobers' test record by scoring 375 against England in Antigua (and scored the aforementioned 501 not out in a first class English inter-county game, both in 1994), he held it for almost a decade until Australian Matthew Hayden raised the record to 380 against emerging test nation Zimbabwe in 2003. Lara's 400 not out shown here was him taking the record back months later, again against England and again in Antigua. Since the priority is to win the game, batters nearing significant milestones aren't always indulged, which is why he didn't just carry on. However, West Indies playing at home enjoyed such dominance over England for the best part of two decades that they were justifiably confident bordering arrogant about the outcome.

Do you want to REALLY be confused? One of the openers (the two batsmen leading off) can in theory "carry his bat" for the whole innings-- in other words, conceivably (though it happens on a frequency of like a perfect game or unassisted triple play in baseball) the other ten batsmen can all be retired, leaving him as the last man standing. In that scenario, likely he's the ONLY one who was getting runs for his side. When a batsman comes in, say at number four, numbers five and six might be retired before he is. So you can have, e.g., number four and number six batting together as a partnership, then numbers four and seven, and so forth. That's what was going on with Lara.

300 is a good score in most games for a team. Your correct with the other batsmen getting out to make the score change from xxx-2 xxx-5. He actually did even better and got 500 in a first class game for Warwickshire in England. However, if you want to understand cricket, watch fire in babylon or robelinda2 for 1970/80's west indies. Brutal, hostile bowling at another level to most sports in aggression and intimidation. And of course, Master blaster, Sir Vivian Isaac Richards who was in this video giving a nod of approval to the prince of anitgua.

A side note that west indies were losing 3-0 in this series, and the condition of the pitch plays a huge role in the outcome of a game, so they made a rather batsman friendly pitch so they wouldnt lose 4-0 in this last game.

Scores 500 or greater are not common, but they do happen every now and then. Scores 600 or greater on the other hand are very rare. Usually because if you bat long enough to score that much, you may not have enough time to bowl the other team out twice (take 20 wickets) in the 5 days allowed.

so everytime the batsmen run between the wickets they swap sides, so if me and you are batting and i score 1 run we swap sides and now now you're on strike, obviously 2-4-6 keeps the sides the same, the bowler changes after an over (6 deliveries) and now we stay where we finished the over but the new bowler comes from the other end so the strike swaps at the end of the over thats how other batters got out while he stayed there. 500 runs is very high for an innings for a team, Brian Lara set a world record here. but the mitigating circumstances are this field is quite small so easier to score high and the pitches in the west indies get very little movement so a lot of batting records get set in this ground. and because Lara spent so long at bat the game didn't play through all its innings within the allotted days and finished a draw. in test cricket you can be 700 runs up but if you cant bowl the other team out you can't win.

The games starts with 2 batsman, 1 striker and 1 non striker, only one can be out at a time, if the batsmen run an odd number of run they swap ends, unless it the ball of the last over, as it the bowler where the non striker would have been last over, a few ways out, the last number you see is 9, if you see runs without any number of wickets, they finish on that number of runs. A non-striker can be ran out, meaning the baileys he running towards, since running the batsman.

To answer your question: Imagine two Batsmen on the opposite ends of the pitch, say end A and end B. An over is a set of 6 bowling deliveries. After an over is completed, two things change: 1. The bowler ( the same bowler can't bowl two consecutive overs) 2. The bowling end (say in the previous over, bowler bowled from end A to B, in the current over a NEW bowler will bowl from end B to A. So let's say in the current over some bowler is bowling from end B to A, batsman at end A would be batting. Remember the Batsmen can swap places when they run across the opposite ends to score right? So whichever batter ends up in the end A after running or without would be batting. In the next over whichever batsman ends up in the end B would be batting.

Take a look at some end of match scorecards. That might help. Look at a team’s batting score card showing all 11 batsmen and their scores and the way they went out. At the bottom there should be a section that says “fall of wickets” which will tell you what the score was each time a wicket fell. You seem to have understood by the end of the video that when one batsman goes out, the other keeps going with the next batter that comes to the crease. Remember, the batters switch ends every time a single (run) or triple (three runs) is scored, because they’re physically switching places to get those runs. Also remember that the bowlers switch ends at the end of each over so that the pitch is worn evenly, and the bowlers can select which end to bowl from based on their own skill set. So if Lara was at the batting end at the end of one over, his parter will be at the batting end for the start of the next over.

Scores of 500+ aren't that uncommon in test matches. The average score in the first innings is probably between 300 and 350. Scores of 600+ happen but are quite uncommon and 700+ isn't unheard of but is very rare. Second innings totals are usually lower as the surface of the pitch becomes harder to bat on as it wears
