Yes ball tampering can make a big difference, but it doesn’t mean anybody can suddenly swing it round corners. Believe it or not even cheating has a level of skill to it. Look up Wasim Akram & Waqar Younis, it’s pretty widely accepted that they tampered with the ball regularly (think they still deny this) but what they could do with a tampered ball was far superior to what any other player I’ve seen do with one.

In Test matches a new ball can be taken after 80 overs which is 480 deliveries. So the ball naturally changes over that time and teams will try and mange the change of the ball depending on how they bowl, what their best bowling is. So a team with a couple of good swing bowlers will try and get the differential shine on both sides to accentuate the swing through the air. Teams with good spin bowlers might want a scuffed up ball which will grip on landing on the pitch better than a shiny ball. Also finger spinners will hold the ball right in their finger tips and can get a better grip with a scuffed ball to put more revolutions on it. Teams might decline to take a new ball after 80 overs if they have spin bowlers who have got the old ball in a great condition for spinning. In T20 games it's nowhere near as relevant as the game are not ,long enough for ball management to be a huge part of the game ........ just another reason why Test matches are much more interesting than T20s !

There are two types of swings in cricket 1. Conventional swing: It takes place when the ball is relatively new which means both sides of the ball is shiny. 2. Reverse swing: It takes place after a certain period of time when the ball gets scuffed up on one side(Players don't let the other side to get scuffed up by applying sweat and rubbing it on their trousers). So tampering the ball is mostly done to get early and good amount of reverse swing into the game which means tampering the ball gets the bowling team a good amount of advantage.
@pseudonym92156 ай бұрын
Ball condition and pitch condition equally determine 95% of the ball behavior, i.e. how much a ball would swing, spin or bounce. So getting the ball in the correct condition in the right window can be the difference between getting 3 quick wickets in a period of few over and winning the match and losing it.
@nitishdaftari73216 ай бұрын
It makes huge difference mate…. A tampered would swing more depending on who is bowling.. it gets harder to hit … the behaviour of a new ball( brand new completely shiny on both sides) a semi new( still new but it has been used for few overs) and a completely old ball is very different… some batsman are good against the hard new ball where as some are good when ball is little old …
@jimmywrangles6 ай бұрын
It doesn't happen often thankfully and in answer to your question it can make a huge difference in the amount of swing or spin a ball can produce.
@GeoffTheChefOfficial6 ай бұрын
Couple things. The ball is eligible to be changed at the fielding teams discretion after 80 overs have been completed in a single innings, if the innings goes that long. In ODI cricket and T20 cricket, the ball doesn’t get changed unless it gets damaged, whereby, as in test cricket for the same rule, an aged ball of similar condition will be chosen to replace it (yes they keep old balls for this purpose) Ball tampering can change the aerodynamic flow of the ball in the air and make the curve (swing) through the air more severe. Hence why it’s outlawed. Picking at the seam could affect the bounce trajectory. Etc etc. There was a point made in the video about not being allowed to throw it into the ground, which isn’t really policed. Outfielders throw the return ball into the ground all the time.

You're going to have to watch a test match from start to finish. The condition of the ball and the way it changes over the course of 80 overs is crazy. Also the field gets dry over the course of the test match and huge cracks start opening up in the surface of the ground. If the ball starts moving unpredictably it makes it very difficult for a batter to defend the stumps properly.

Deflating the ball is the same as ball tampering to a certain degree unless you are Tom Brady. A tampered ball makes it easier to a type of swing called "reverse" swing, and it is almost unplayable if the batter doesn't know and he/she might get out, which is huge cause you only have to 10 "outs" per innings and your innings may wrap up quickly.
@davidlawrence50916 ай бұрын
Talking about cheating in the game there was a classic incident with Dominic Cork. He was batting for England against the West Indies and he hit the ball into the outfield for two runs. However in the process he had knocked the bails off the stumps, which would normally mean he was out. Except no one else had noticed, so he just casually put the bail back on and continued the innings. About 100 years ago W G Grace didn't even try hiding it. In the 19th century he was an absolute superstar and is probably still one of the most famous players of all time. One day he was playing a match and was bowled early in the innings, but instead of walking off the field he put the bails back on and continued batting. The bowler understandably challenged this, and W G Grace is reported to have said something like 'my dear boy the crowd haven't come to see you bowl, they are here to see me bat'. He also apparently hid the ball in his beard until the batsman left his crease before running him out, and when doing the coin toss would call 'the lady instead of heads or tails. The coins at the time had Queen Victoria on one side and Britannia on the other so he always won. These could be hyperbole, but there are so many stories like these that thete must be some truth to the claims of him being a massive cheat.
@mignik016 ай бұрын
When the ball is new, you get normal swing. The ball swings to the rough side (the side with the logo and everything on it). It is not due to different resistances. It is because laminar flow separates earlier than turbulent flow. After let's say 10 overs or so, the swing stops. This is around the time spinners come on. Rougher ball means it is easier for them to grip and spin. Then much later, reverse swing happens (if conditions are permissive). Which means the ball starts swinging to the shiny side (harder concept to explain). This is much deadlier as it happens much later in its trajectory. If you artificially degrade the ball, you can make this happen quicker. Sometimes when the ball starts reversing, batting sides collapse in a heap because it is really difficult to play.
@michaelwebster83896 ай бұрын
The ball tampering is mainly about promoting swing bowling - movement in the air. In particular getting the ball to reverse swing can make a big difference to how hard the ball is to hit.
@prabhatkiranmukherje6 ай бұрын
Reverse swing is probably the single most lethal thing in playing conditions. Top quality fast bowlers are essentially unplayable even in otherwise good conditions by all time great batsmen. Reverse swing typically results in sudden collapses. In the match prior to the controversy, Australia did this same cheat and the swinging ball proceeded wreck havoc. This alerted the broadcasters who are a South African company and naturally partisan; they made it their mission to catch the Aussies here. A simplified version is that when fast bowlers bowl there can be prodigious late movement which is almost impossible to counter.
@Mayhem4Hire6 ай бұрын
Batter & Bowler stand about 20 yards apart at time of delivery, the ball travels about 85-90mph. If you can make the ball change direction halfway down the pitch (even slightly) it becomes very difficult to play. The greater the difference between shiny side and rough side the greater the amount of 'swing' (direction change), which makes the ball unplayable and gives the advantage to the bowling team.
@dvo666 ай бұрын
Both teams forms lot of strategy based on condition of ball . If ball is scuffed a lot it is easier for spinner to bowl spin and so balling team will have slow spin bowler and so does batting team have the batsmen who play spin bowler well. for last Powerplay overs bowling team will be have swings bowlers and set up field according to that, and so does the batting team will have such batsmen. so the ball condition is central to the strategy. Edit : react to Jaspret Bumhrah, he is currently #1 fast pace bowler in world
@SandeepBPatel6 ай бұрын
Okay, so here is the thing, a cricket bowler can throw the ball at speeds reaching 64 to 160 kilometres per hour (40 to 100 miles). Even a degree of tilt in the ball at that speed is enough to change match results. In this video, they are only talking about how ball tempering can affect a "Swing" ball, however there are other styles of bowling like the "Spin", and here the ball spins after touching the ground. A rough end can increase the degree of spin to match changing levels.
@piripi406 ай бұрын
Any tiny advantage is important for the bowling team. Half an inch of extra swing movement is the difference that could mean the batsman gets a fine edge and is caught by the wicket keeper.
@stue22986 ай бұрын
In MLB they changed the rules if a ball touch the ground it gets replaced, if i am correctly remembering, since a scuffed ball would act differently to a clean/new ball. Ball tampering would not be done if it wasn't beneficial, every little thing helps could be the difference between winning and losing. Now if you have great swing bowlers in your team, this 'extra help' could make a huge difference. Changing the ball, this mostly happens in first class cricket when the ball is out of shape, they test this with 2 different sized rings, one ring the ball passes through and one ring where it too small for the ball to pass through. The ball gets mishaped and will not pass through either ring.

From the ball tempering: In one of game the batting team was in good position but Chris Gayle hit the ball so far that the ball went missing and umpires gave another used ball but the rules says the new ball needs to be similar old as the previous one so the umpire rubbed the new used ball on concrete and it started reverse swinging and the batting team got all out and lost the match.
@coriolan84316 ай бұрын
Comments re affecting the swing a bowler can get by tampering with the ball are pretty spot on (though I do think the reaction to the sandpaper incident was overblown at the time given the prevalence of ball tampering over decades). There's a few other cheating mechanisms that should be considered - picking the seam was briefly discussed but on softish pitches as in England or NZ can lead to larger movements of the ball after it has bounced just in front of the batter (medium to fast-medium bowlers known as seamers rather than swing bowlers try to hit the seam into the pitch to get the ball the deviate slightly as it arrives to the batter) - batters running down the pitch rather than slightly to the side can churn up the pitch with their boot spikes to make more suitable for their spinners and seamers bowling in the next innings (umpires are rather strict on that) - bowlers running down the pitch in their follow through after the delivery doing the same for later in the innings (they can be stopped from further bowling in the innings by the umpires if they keep doing it after a warning) - local umpires became so notorious for their "interesting" decisions in test matches that only umpires from neutral countries can now be appointed to officiate in test matches - doctoring of pitches by ground staff to suit the strengths of the local side over the touring one. - the gambling rubbish, e.g. deliberate no-ball bowled at, say, over 10.4 of an innings all the way up to match fixing (it's happened in all forms, some people went to jail over it) I'm liking your posts about your learning of cricket Luke, this is good fun. In a previous more general one I noticed you didn't mention that at the end of every over the fielding team and their bowlers switch ends of the pitch while the batters stay where they are. That leads to the interesting dynamic of a good batter batting with a tailender needing to attempt to score a single near the end of an over to get to the other end and "keep strike" so protecting the lesser batter's wicket for the team and being able to score again next over without worrying that their partner will get out facing an entire over they might not be able to score from. And of course the opponents adjusting the field settings to prevent that. -

Sadly ball tampering is a tool of desperation for bowlers with the way game is going, the regular change of balls, the batter friendly changes over the years, the way pitches are becoming flatter, stickyness in pitch being non existent, the effect of dew in day night matches, dew favouring the batter, the way balls degrade with new manufacturing changes, the improvement in bats, the game is anyway heavily skewed to vatters nowadays.
@shreyasjaiswal21966 ай бұрын
For the fielding side, they technically only need 6-7 magic deliveries to make the game one-sided and when there are only 6-8 batters in a team and you have scores like 300-350 to chase, one wicket can cost you the game
@bradleyrhodes89066 ай бұрын
Ball tampering makes a huge difference in ball behavior in cricket because you use the same ball for the whole innings or 80 overs. In test matches you can get into the dark arts of 'reverse swing'. This requires ball management to the point that the ball swings in the opposite direction to how ot would normally behave. It's a long story
@Raven-fh2yy6 ай бұрын
Whether or not the tampering of the ball makes one iota of difference is immaterial. This is CRICKET (read that as being said in the same way as This is Sparta) and you do NOT cheat, ever, for any reason. This is a game for gentlemen and ladies, if you lose you smile and shake the hands of the victors as they were the better team on the day, if you win you shake the hands of the defeated and commiserate with them assuring them that next time it may be different. After the Australian ball tampering incident in South Africa there has been an ongoing debate as to whether those players involved should ever represent their country again, my opinion is they should not, regardless of them being some of the most talented players in the game. They brought disrepute to the team and the game and they deserve nothing other than being shunned from the cricketing community for life. (Yes that's how passionate we are about this)

The condition of the ball matters quite a bit i'll approach this from 3 perspectives: The Batters, Spin Bowlers & Pace/Fast Bowlers From a batters point of view the ball can start seeming like it has a mind of it's own due to how it'll unnaturally move when managed properly & it makes it incredibly hard to play. From a spin bowlers point of view the degradation of the ball is a massive help because as it degrades more small little dents and cuts open on the ball which allows the ball to better grip & thus spin off the pitch. From a fast bowlers point of view you want to manage the ball properly because of swing & if you manage it just right you can get whats known as reverse swing where the ball starts swinging the opposite way (So usually the ball would swing towards the rough side but with reverse switch it'll swing towards the shiny side) & rightfully so batters find reverse swing a NIGHTMARE to play against.
@arekaleksyw6 ай бұрын
The issue is somewhat similar to MLB pitchers applying sticky substances to their hands, it helps the bowlers get more bang for their buck out of their deliveries. In limited overs cricket it doesn't matter as much but when you're 5 hours deep into a test match, getting a few extra inches of movement out of the ball can be enough to surprise a tired batsman.

The ball is changed after 90 overs - or perhaps 80 as people have suggested below. But if at any time before then the ball becomes unusable, the umpires will select the closest condition ball of the same age from a collection they have - ie. the same number of overs have been bowled with that ball.

@Raven-fh2yy6 ай бұрын
Consider this when asking how much these interferences make. All you have to do is make the ball movement enough so it moves half the width of the bat. If that happens then the batsman, who is obviously trying to hit the ball in the middle of the bat, and it moves half the width or more the batsman may have the ball hit the edge of the bat creating a catching chance behind the wicket or miss it altogether creating a bowled or LBW chance. So... the maximum legal width of a cricket bat is 4.25 inches therefore if the interference with the ball can, by itself or in tandem with natural swing, make the ball move somewhere around 2 inches off it's straight path the chances of getting an out greatly increase.

Ball tampering makes a huge difference and as a bowler I can tell just by looking at the ball or by how it feels in my hand if it has been tampered with during my spell as apposed to natural wear. That ball is my main weapon to try and get batsmen our and I don't want anything done to it that I'm not expecting as it will affect what happens after it has left my hand.
@lough_out_loud6 ай бұрын
Ohh...it affects alot...so the condition of the ball is really important. When the ball is new, hard and shiny it will cut through the air much quicker and give you much more swing but as the game gose on the ball will eventually became softer and rough. So it has a lot more grip on it so the more grip really helps the spin bowlers. So if you watch a match u will more often than not see the fast bowlers start with the new ball and eventually when the ball gets a little older spin bowlers come into the game. Ball condition and maintaining the shine has a huge impact on the game.
@Sillyman966 ай бұрын
These ball tampering incidents occur because teams want to induce something called reverse swing. This happens when one side of the ball is scuffed through wear and tear and the other side is shined, making that side of the ball heavier than the scuffed side. When the ball is then bowled, the ball swings with the shine. Teams may tamper with the ball because they want the ball to reverse swing as quick as possible rather than wait for it to naturally occur which depending on weather conditions may not even happen
@eightyseven31136 ай бұрын
It is not due to one side being heavy. It is purely aerodynamics.

Teams shine the shiny side of the ball in "Different ways" all the time and no one takes those seriously except when they're blatantly stupid. It's like everyone knows and turns the other way. It's only when they try to rough up the rough side or pick the seam, all hell gets loose. Mind you, you can always ASK PERMISSION from the umpire to pick the seam or do whatever under the supervision of the umpire if you have a genuine reason. Sometimes the umpire himself will pick the dirt off the seam or cut the scruffy leather for you. Ask permission.

In the overall scheme of things, it gives the bowling team a definite advantage. The 2018 incident with Australia blew everything up far bigger than it ever has been. Every country has done it, it still happens regularly and the penalties really aren't that sever - until the Australian cricket authorities (Cricket Australia) decided to hand out year long bans, including extended leadership bans to the players involved, where as the International Cricket Council gave them 2 match bans. Pakistani bowlers were notorious for roughing up the balls illegally to make the old ball 'reverse-swing' much before it can do that on its own.
