Just to let everyone know, there are some other insiders coming out and saying that the 400 million number is laughably wrong. Colin has good track record, but it's important. Regardless, the fact that it's believable is still hilarious and shows just how little confidence gamers have in Sony executives with these live service productions.

That's the trouble with stuff like this. Sony is maneuvering for a big fat tax break, so they're going to try to overplay their loss. Odds of getting the truth out of this whole story diminish with each passing day.

ProbablyMonsters CEO Harold Ryan is the former Bungie CEO. Bungie has been consulting Sony on live service game strategies since they were purchased. There is a story here. The possibility of collusion between current Bungie execs and Harold Ryan to convince Sony to buy Firewalk and Concord. If Firewalk had spent almost 200 million to get to Alpha, it’s safe to assume ProbablyMonsters needed a bailout.

@@mrturbo84 Not being able to state concerns or give feedback isn't generally the fault of a team, it's the fault of management, because they're the ones who create those conditions where team members aren't heard. I truly feel that Sony proper should do a lawsuit against Jim Ryan for his gross mismanagement of the PlayStation brand. Edit: I seriously don't understand what happened to PlayStation when the late PS3 and early PS4 era was popping off. You had a team of executives that understood what their consumers wanted, and it was catapulting the PS4 to extreme success, off the back of the atrocious PS3 launch. Then, at the peak of the brand's reputation, they completely reconfigure the executive team, install an game-hating accountant as the CEO, get rid of Shawn Layden, demote Shuehei Yoshida, and start pissing away money on buying teams to... What, replace Call of Duty? A game that is not the reason anyone buys a PS5 for?

To clarify, an MVP in software development doesn't mean it's ready to sell, it just means the bare minimum work was done to get the product to meet the lowest level of requirements. MVPs are almost never in a state that is ready to sell, they are used to determine if your idea has legs to it and if you should continue investing resources to finish it into an alpha.

I have no idea why people had faith in Hermen Hulst. From what I can tell, he was one of the big pushers of PS moving away from Japan. Sure Jim Ryan put PS towards the path, but Hermen put Sony on an equally distructive path and basically stripped Japan out of Playstation. He also pushed for the closure of Japan studios. I would even bet that he ignited an anti-Japan movement over at Japan, because the shift PS had from just a few years ago, when they were still headquartered at Japan, but moved to Cali, I'd bet that was in part Hermen's doing. Stripping JP out of PS was the worst thing to happen to PS. The moment, or even before he was put in charge, he imediately put PS down this path. A path towards still some live service, but also this out of touch design and themes around these games that FEELS like it came straight out of LA and Montreal.

This game was obviously a monumental failure, but I don’t buy the 400 million dollar budget. The developer is either exaggerating, getting their wires crossed or something is being lost in translation. Developers wouldn’t even be privy to that kind of information. The long term budget IF the game continued long term would have maybe projected to have been that amount, but 400 million for four years of active development with an 150 person team makes no sense. Not to mention the fact that this game had close to no marketing.

The strategy behind MVP is to get a product to market as quickly and cheaply as possible to find out how the market will react to it and to build on it or pivot using market feedback. It is a risk mitigation strategy and allows you to gather requirements using real world data rather than trying to figure out what people might want.

For game development I've seen 10k per month per person as the quick calculation for how much things might cost. That's average salary including each employee's share of management, HR, taxes, rent, heat, all in. That was a few years ago, might be a higher base now. Following that math for 8 years, that's 400 people. I could believe this 100%.

I feel like there's been a lot lost in translation or something, I legitimately don't see any way the game cost this much. Maybe Sony budgeted $400 million total for like the game's development/first 5 years of live service (so 2019-2029) and a dev confused that for the game's budget up to this point. The game had like 16 characters and 12 sameish looking maps/4 game modes on release, I seriously don't see how on any level the math checks out. I absolutely believe every word about the "toxic positivity" culture that led to the game's design decisions though LMAO
