As a manga collector this scares me. Sony would be extremely close to becoming a monopoly over anime/manga publishing. They are already extremely strict about censorship and I do not wish for them to change stories in any impactful way or change how we consume a medium.

Japan censorship have it's own rules based on target audience, which is why some works are more or less censored than others, and might even change censorship level with the changes of publisher. Western censorships are indiscriminate and powered entirely by ideology, to the point where ruining AO-rated fiction because "it harms children" and "offended minorities" However, Sony acquiring Kadokawa would be APOCALYPTIC for the reason you mentioned. NOW they can do everything people feared they could do.

CrunchyRoll is a streaming service meaning they pay the studios or whoever control the product to be streamed on Crunchyroll they don't own it and it's not the only place that stream anime. Netflix stream them, amazon prime basically every streaming Service have an anime section. Japan have many publisher of anime and manga Shueisha Inc is by far the biggest. Owning one would not make them have a monopoly.

Sony getting Kadokawa is more on the manga and publishing side because Sony has the massive control on the Anime production and distribution (aniplex, crunchyroll and funimation) before those anime gets made, they usually start as a manga/light novel this is the part Sony want as well. I don't give Endymion much weight but according to his sources the buyout is a confluence of Kadokawa not wanting to get bought out by a Chinese company and the current conflict between Sony Japan and Sony America's differing approaches to game development. I don't think you know how these works. Sony doesn't dictate what game their studio makes. The studio pitch a game to sony for funding and then they would greenlit it if they think it's going to make money.. I don't know who's job is it now, but it used to be Shohei Yoshida job to go around and look at games and see if it's worth it and He came across this little game called Demon Souls which kick up the whole Souls Genre. If you really think about it Sony put Fromsoftware on the map with Armored Core and Demon Souls which ignited the Dark Souls Saga.

Sony has a hostile relationship with Fromsoft. They wouldn't back Dark Souls because they didn't believe in Fromsoft after Demon Souls and they've held Bloodborne hostage and won't let Fromsoft use the IP but also won't back a sequel because the 1st game didn't sell enough.

I think this deal will not go through. As a Sony fan, I thought the acquisitions were cool at first, but now they are steady on their way to monopolizing the anime and manga side. They currently own Crunchyroll,Funimation, and Rightstuf. If the acquisition goes through, they will control the majority of the LN distribution, anime studios, and FROMSOFT. This is problematic.

Jesus no. Kadokawa has so far done a great job at giving their creators/studios independence in their creative directions. Sony managed studios are much top-down… in the sense that top executives decide what they want, and actual developers/creatives find the way. If Sony takes control of Fromsoft’s creative direction, we’ll likely never see another Elden Ring ever again, because the scale is too risky of an investment for Sony. That’s actually one of the reason we don’t get Bloodborne… because Sony didn’t like the way it was developed.
