After seeing the reveal trailer for Space Marine 2 I got super hyped right away, the cinematic was amazing and they had a small 30 to 20 second clip of gameplay and I was hooked. I got hyped for what I was expecting to be just a single player story game, now it's got coop campaign it's got pve operations, pvp, earnable cosmetics. My expectations for the game were exceeded beyond what I was expecting, so I think if you're gonna get hyped for a game it's better if it starts at a low point vs it's gonna have everything.
@TheMrDewil12 күн бұрын
I could be wrong here, but that's just my subjective feelings on the matter. Back in the day cinematic trailers were more like something extra, to give you a better/clearer idea what the idea of the game is all about, setting the atmosphere and such, probably because graphics back then weren't as good as nowadays, and raw in-game footage wouldn't convey the full picture. And now they've been weaponized to mislead you into buying something, you might not even enjoy all that much, by the hired legion of psychologists of all kinds.

Going to disagree on how you spread out the 10 scale. A 7/10 is a C, average, in the US school system, but that doesn't work well for reviewing games. Because, well, let's face it, very few (professionally made) games are going to be a 4/10 or lower if C is average. And that leaves very little room between 7/10 and 10/10. And very few games should be worthy of 10/10. If you're using the 10 scale, a 5 or 6 should be the decent/average, so that you can utilize the full range of numbers. It's why a 5 star system generally tends to be more accurate, because it is more consistently used. 3/5 is seen as average, 1/5 as very bad, 5/5 very good. And that's consistent. Toss in some half stars and you now enough points, while still being clear. And for something like metacritic, that consistent application matters, rather than having vastly differences in the use of the scale.

It was the definition of a 6 or 7 out of 10 if I ever saw one. That said, even though it's a 6/7 I'd still put it over many better games in my personal hierarchy. That being said, you shouldn't ignore games in the 6 or 7 area, they may have problems but you may like them anyway.

Skepticism is important in all walks of life. But when it comes to video games, it's fine to enjoy whatever it is you enjoy. Even if it's a game that people don't think is any good. And keep in mind it goes both ways. Nowadays people are actually hyped to watch things fail and be just as deluded as this guy was to protect that narrative. Measure your expectations, always. Play what you like, don't play what you don't. Simple as that.
@Sekhatt23 күн бұрын
First part of your sentance seems to suggest theirs a dichotomy between being skepticism and enjoying what you enjoy. They are orthagonal. Being skeptical is just keeping other peoples claims about something in check. Don't go all in on a game until you've seen / played it yourself. The sales people want you to buy it, they don't care if you'll enjoy it, the equally hate hypers want you to hate something, they don't care whether you would actually dislike it. Be skeptical of *both* camps. Make your own decision, and if you dislike something, even if everyone else likes it, that's okay. If you like something that everyone else dislikes, that's also okay. At the end of the day, you are looking for games that *you* will enjoy. Not games that everyone else will enjoy. So remain skeptical, so you can make better reasoned and better informed decisions so you are more likely to find those games.
@3choblast3r423 күн бұрын
Being skeptical doesn't mean you don't enjoy anything or are refusing to enjoy anything. Looking at trends that are going on, the things GTA devs are saying. The way Red Dead 1 went from GTA in the wild west to RR2, a much more serious western.. shows us a lot. The next GTA will likely be a good game, but it will likely be a bad GTA. I just want my satirical power fantasy where I can have laugh and vent. But I can guarantee you that we're not getting GTA radio etc as we know it. We're not going to get a real GTA anymore because it's too "problematic".. the fact that it's "problematic" is what made GTA what GTA is, and what makes GTA sell so well. But now, who cares right? It's all about the MP mode. Cut down on the SP as much as possible and put everything in the MP. While also making the MP safe enough that gaming journos won't cry about it being problematic and mommies and daddies who don't game won't refuse to buy it for their children.

Its so funny in retrospect knowing how the development of No Man's Sky began; Sean Murray's "its your story" answer was literally just fillibuster because the game was rushed too quickly to even have a unique hook. Also, even in super detailed RPGs where you have absurd levels of choice, the game still has a unique identity that draws you in specifically to create a unique vision for yourself, IN that vision, not of that vision.

I think 2025 will reshape the industry. A lot of companies are relying on a "turnaround" game or a heavy hitter to stay afloat, or relevant, and as much as I'd like to believe they'll pull through, recent history has shown otherwise. Experts expect growth and depending on how these games perform, we'll either see a significant shift in how games are produced or industry pillars and mainstays collapsing and/or restructuring. @@MrKnaivesI mentioned his departure because it's evidence supporting a point. working together isn't magically sunshine and rainbows. We're arguing because you were strangely reductive about the impact of this video, trivializing the through-line that hype is problematic. Luke didn't get anything wrong here. It's their job to make things look good, have a united front, consider optics with their company... And STILL they were visibly frustrated about their wildly different perspectives/values. Not at all the first or last time they were visibly angry with each other on camera. The idea that hype makes people crazy (in a small way) the same as joining a cult, is a pretty important conversation to have, and you're out here trying to diffuse the message without Really knowing any better.

The same way an unknown horror is scarier than whatever it could be due to imagination, a hype game can be however good the fans are willing to imagine it to be. The more information you have regarding something, the less there is left to the imagination and thus there's no longer any reason to be irrationally hyped, paving the way for true excitement (going by Luke's description of the two).

This reminds me so much of IGN and their excitement for Evolve which has been shutdown for sometime now. Thus it clearly demonstrated why private KZbinrs can be more levelheaded (with some exceptions Obe1plays, Gametrailers, etc)

I miss Gametrailers and Gametrailers Rewards Points or whatever they were called. I got like 4 - 5 Brand New 360 games thru that system, had videos with 40k+ views, and was the leader of the Xbox 360 Faction, simply by bringing the most devoted fans to take control of the Factions section and become #1 until they shut it down lol So much fun as a kid, and so sad that Xbox console sales are tanking (Xbox brand / studios still doing fine though)

OK, so as I’m ironically, sitting here playing No Man’s Sky, I have to add a comment to say.. I was someone who was overly hyped for this game in 2016, and then was so depressed by the incredibly awful release in August 2016 that I put the game down for like three years and never touched it. The thing that makes me keep playing now and bringing me back is the fact that they’ve had nearly 40 named updates and like 15 small updates with content, as well as multiple patches and fixes all for free while never asking for anyone to spend any money and not even offering any type of micro transaction or extra thing to keep the game alive. Regardless of how the game launched it’s hard not to respect Sean Murray for taking the game and making it what it is today.

I'm skeptical when KZbinr told us that they're not being biased or under payroll of some big corpo scum so does that counts
@octavianpopescu477623 күн бұрын
But then what is the person supposed to say if accused of being paid? I would defend myself and deny it, if I were accused of that. You can't just stay quiet while comments' sections are full of accusations. I tend to ignore this stuff, because both a guilty and an innocent person are expected to deny being paid. It seems reasonable they'd do that, guilty or not.

U mean like Luke ? He just ignores all the comments and pretends he isn't.
@JesusRodriguez-mu4hg23 күн бұрын
Lol, even if he told you he wasn't, would you believe it? My gut says no, so what is the point of coming out and denying something when the people that believe it wont listen? The people that dont believe it dont need to be told so, its expected. If I told you that you are putting comments on youtube because you are being paid by big corpo news to cast doubt on youtubers, how would you prove to me that you are not? You cant prove a negative. Even then, if anyone truly believes someone is paid by big corpo, why would they be still watching, bringing engagement up by commenting and liking/disliking videos and comments? That sounds like a plant to me. True smart people would just leave and block the channel.

I've been bored with Rockstar since GTA IV. Plenty of people have made video's about the problems with Rockstar game design. I personally think both Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3 are a bit to large for the perfect game size. A game a bit smaller then both is the perfect size for a game. Roughly a 50 hour game with a 100 plus hours of replay/side content. Always comes down to the design of the game which is often bad in general. Rockstar does really good world design, but the quest design has been a lingering issue for Rockstar.

I use the term "cautiously optimistic." People were calling me a Sony Pony for being skeptical about Starfield (even though I also own an Xbox and play on everything). At no point did I even suggest that I wanted the game to be bad, I didn't, I just told people to keep their expectations in check given Bethesda and Microsoft's history.

I was hyped for No Man's Sky back in the day, but reservedly so. I thought "if this game has half the things in it they say, i'll be happy". It didn't and I wasn't (The game is great now). It taught me a valuable lesson: If they don't show it to you, don't assume it's there. Whatever they show you, it's the absolute best possible, maybe only technically doable version of that thing. The only game that's ever fully bamboozled me was Brutal Legend, because they straight up advertised that game was a different thing than it ended up being. I had no way of knowing what I was actually buying.

You can almost compare this man's view of the game's creator as Harlequinn and the Joker. Harlequinn is supposed to prioritize her job and avoid creating needless emotions that'd cloud her judgment, yet she ends up becoming fanatical. The biggest difference, to me, seems to be that the game's creator seemingly never intended for such a thing to happen whereas the Joker did.

Although Anthem wasn't the genesis for my games skepticism (Blizzard had a heavy hand in it as well) it was what convinced me to finally take a step back and think about the games I choose to play in more detail. I have too many games in my steam library that I still haven't played. I've given up on pre-orders, early access (with a few exceptions), and virtually all AAA games. The few exceptions I would make to the last part might be SquareEnix, FromSoft, and Capcom, specifically Monster Hunter. I don't even play games very much anymore despite wanting to. I just wind up watching other people play them. I love gaming but I've lost so much faith in it with recent years with the hamfisting of politics and awful writing. I can maybe overlook some things if the gameplay itself is genuinely good.

I think this whole video can be boiled down to proper management of expectations. Getting too hype or fully cynical can both lead to disappointment, but it’s worth pointing out that only one of those is perpetually disappointed and generally doesn’t enjoy anything, and it’s really easy to migrate from skeptical and critical to “dislikes everything for very small reasons or no reason at all”.
