In The Moon Rises, it's the story of Luna turning into the evil version of herself Nightmare Moon. She's upset because she doesn't get the respect she deserves. She's angry that her older sister, Celestia, who's in Lullaby Of A Princess, gets all the attention and respect. In Lullaby Of A Princess, Celestia's singing to Luna/Nightmare Moon because she had to send her to the moon for the sake of Equestria, their kingdom. Celestia didn't realize that Luna was upset until it was too late. Celestia's upset because she had to send her little sister to the moon as a punishment. Both of the songs here were actually by the same artist-Ponyphonic-and were written in tandem around 2011-2012 (don't quote me), Luna's anger and resentment followed by Celestia's sorrow and regret. All the rest of Ponyphonic's fan songs are absolutely Broadway quality, but these two caught everyone's attention for its central focus around Luna and Celestia-a story we never really get to see much of in the show proper. In fact, WarpOut took so long animating Lullaby for a Princess (so much done by hand no less) that the show itself actually *did* show us a glimpse of Celestia's fight with Nightmare Moon in one episode, and WarpOut had to reframe some elements to fit the canon better. The video for The Moon Rises was by DuoCartoonist and their entire repertoire has such a professional looking quality to it that I would be surprised if they actually did work at a studio somewhere.

@EditDeath2 жыл бұрын
@@scienceandponies Doesn't surprise me, really. In a way, your eldritch Pinkie concept must have tapped into the Cupcakes energy of the early fandom, when a ton of horror stories were written around there being a problem with Pinkie Pie. Add to that the way Pinkie reacted to power in the climax of the series, and eldritch Pinkie really seems like something even the creators had in mind briefly
@scienceandponies2 жыл бұрын
@@EditDeath I suspect it's a combination of size (short and sweet) , degree of compatibility with canon, and nailing what cosmic horror is supposed to be. Because the core element of Cosmic Horror isn't big scary monsters with eyes and mouths and tentacles everywhere. It's about the unraveling of established understanding of the universe. Finding that 2 + 2 = 7 or orange. Eldrtitch monsters are things that simply shouldn't exist by conventional understanding of reality and whose presence is an intrusion of deeper truths we're not meant to grasp.Thus the story is about Twilight actually trying to rationally study Pinkie's abilities and concluding that they all exist in a fictional world driven by narrative laws of convenience rather than actual physical laws of nature (a tough blow for a scientist). Science isn't real and reality is a running joke. Pinkie is just the vehicle to that discovery.

I always loved the ending visual of Celestia tucking the moon under the clouds, just like she tucked her sister under the blanket. It’s heartbreaking to think that for 1000 years this was her routine, reliving those moments and wondering if she could’ve stopped her sister from becoming a villain. She never blamed Luna for how she felt or how she acted. She blamed herself for not being there to help her, to comfort her when Luna was at her lowest. It’s just, an amazing work of art. I could watch it a million times and still be in awe of the story, the music, and the animation. I always am. Even if the show didn’t show much of their background, this story to me fits them rather well.

I never liked MLP but as an animation enthusiast since the moment I remember, and an even bigger sucker for a good story, I watched the entire show after I found Lullaby For A Princess. I adore the animation still and watched the show because the story presented in this got me very curious with the sheer seriousness of it. And I gotta admit, the show, even though not at all for my taste for it's sickly positive attitude and almost ubearably bright colors, was surprisingly good. The darker episodes really got to me because I always heard of how it was happy-go-lucky and just for little girls and nothing too dark was ever discussed, but this animation alone proved that wrong and caught my attention. MLP can get dark as an abyss and those episodes were my favorites. For what audience it is, I get why there weren't that many pointedly serious episodes or things narrated in detail, but if there were more, I would've been satisfied with the time I spent binging the entire goddamn show (and then again when it actually ended because I fell off at some point). But it did leave an impact and once every few years I flip through some fanworks because I'm still a sucker for that canonical angst getting explored. Art is amazing.

@@veronicawexel1291 You're thinking of "The Cutie Map." That two-parter goes harder than it had any right to. Easily one of the top stories in the entire canon. From the disturbing song "Our Town" to the literal brainwashing of one of the country's political leaders, and a key piece of their national defense strategy, ... it's honestly deeply unnerving. And that's even before you start pondering the terror of a person who can literally rip your destiny and personality away from you, and make you think you wanted it. Of course, we're not even talking about how the entire planet is so "in harmony" it's completely stagnant. The sun and moon have never moved, unless someone moved them. The seasons don't change unless someone changes them. The animals are not even fully self-sufficient. The idea of any contradiction to that "natural order" is abhorrent, or at least unnerving, to the ponies living there. It's a completely alien way of life hidden under a veneer of cheery rustic charm. But, even the charm of the locals conceals deep racial and class divides. The unicorns of Canterlot are considered snooty, and a lot of wealth is pooled in the capital city. The rural regions of Equestria are largely populated by earth ponies who typically don't seem to have a lot of wealth, and the rich unicorns often look down their ... muzzles, I guess, at them. Didn't even mention that no one bats an eyelash at the fact that Cloudsdale is a pegasus enclave that almost no one else can visit, yet they control the weather for the entire country, and maybe even the world! There's uh, really a lot of unsettling stuff in Equestria when you start to ponder what living there would really be like. Haven't even mentioned the fact that at any given point a parasite could be impersonating a loved one to feed off of your emotional bond with the pony they replaced. I mean, good lord!

9:50 I delve a little bit into MLP a couple years ago, and one very important thing of the lore, is that Celestia (the one who sang in Lullaby for a Princess), after banishing her younger sister (Luna) to the moon, was tasked with raising both the Sun and Moon every night for 1,000 years. That means in the series’ canon, every day and every night, for 1,000 years, Celestia was confronted with a cold reminder that she herself sent her sister away, and it’s a spell that can’t be undone until that time limit passes, every time she’d raise or lower the moon and see her sister’s silhouette… Luna’s duties became her burdens, and while not canon, a song like this could give us a glimpse at the guilt Celestia would feel for doing this. The song’s lyrics are self-reassurance that THIS was the right choice and all that could be done, and honestly if one got into a fight with a sibling that resulted in the latter getting locked up, you could wonder if there was anything you could do to get a different outcome. The vocals are so chilling, and in tandem with the animation, you can tell a lot of love was put into this.

Very happy to see that you're continuing on this train! Also, you want emotional pony song videos? Try "Fall of an Empire" (the lyric video version). Not much animation there, just artwork - but seeing how this tugged at your heartstrings, just you wait~

To answer your question about Lullaby - Yes, it was hand animated. I'm sure someone's already answered that but if not I wanted to let you know. took them many years to complete.

Both songs were written and composed by Ponyphonic. The fandom always had a decent stable of musicians but when this guy came along it was a sensation. I remember fondly many fan song but when I saw you reacting to this I had to drop everything. The animations were made by other fan creators and no other Ponyphonic songs got a video like this. Still though I would recommend checking out more of their songs like shy heart and applejack. The only other super high quality fan animation with an original fan song is Picture Perfect Pony. Not like these two songs but it still impresses me by emulating the shows art style but being better animated.

Adding to the chorus of people encouraging you to react to MLP generation 4 songs, I really recommend diving in head first! I also recommend reacting to more fan made and remixes. Artists like Blackgryphon, 4everfreebrony, TheLivingTombstone, and Eurobeat Brony. I would also recommend the music of RWBY, starting with the Red, White, Black, and Yellow trailers.

I’d love a reaction to the actual series! Maybe just the first episode it gives context to these animations as a teenager (on the older side of teenagers) I can say I literally watched the last season and I still enjoyed it just as much as I did back then, maybe that makes me a child but idc

It's easier to understand the quality of MLP fan music once you get more of a taste for what we were blessed with in G4 proper. You want a good taste of that? Start with 'This Day Aria'. Daniel Ingram played with authentic and deceptive cadences in a duet between a character named Cadence and a villain with shapeshifting abilities who was masquerading as her, but even without the clever use of musical theory it's just a really good, Disney-level song. For a while it was _the_ favorite of the fandom. For some it was never topped, but even for those who ended up finding a song that topped it I don't think any song really competed with it until Season 6, and This Day Aria was in Season 2.

Funny thing about the disclaimer in the beginning of The Moon Rises animatic is that Hasbro is very strict on their copyright policies, and it’s very common for most fan animators for mlp to have their work taken down. It’s still a very common thing, and many iconic works in the fandom have been taken down and reuploaded due to copyright issues

if you want to listen to songs from the mlp series here are some suggestions!! - smile (do not listen the hd version!!) - hearts as strong as horses - a kirins tale - this day aria - you're in my head like a catchy song - winter wrap up - pinkies presents - true gift of giving - rules of rarity - art of the dress

Part of the reason for the disclaimer was that these projects took years, and during those years, the show actually had storylines about the characters and events. For instance, a later season of the show established that Starswirl The Bearded (the wizardy onlooker in The Moon Rises) wasn't present for those events, having disappeared earlier. And there was an in-show version of that Dragonball-esque confrontation between Celestia (the day princess) and Luna/Nightmare Moon (the corrupted night princess). The two sequences were completely independent and didn't knowingly reference each other, but handled the same even differently because of the different stories they were telling.

You should react to the band Blind Channel. They call their style of music Violent Pop, and I'd love to see what you think of it. Dark Side is a good song to start from. Personally, I love Timebomb, Snake and Bad Idea. They also made an incredibly popular cover of Left Outside Alone by Anastacia. On a side note, forever waiting for the NateWantsToBattle reaction.

I think NateWantsToBattle has rebranded as Give Hearts [Edit: Records], if it's a "I keep looking for that channel, but can't seem to find what you're talking about" thing.

Looking forward to you slowy becoming a brony just for the music, both official and fan made. It's one of the biggest elements that keeps me hooked into the show and you'd be surprised how well the fans do with their music even live. Before recent times when cons were bigger I'd go to BronyCon as often as I could just for the concerts they would do every year.

I came across a quote that I think sums up a lot of what MLP has done. It did for art what Star Trek did for science. It's gotten so many people with incredible talent to try new things, to express themselves and to make some really unbelievable stuff. And it's worked so well because the characters are so understandable - We know the ponies. We know people who've struggled in the shadows, people who've missed that they're hurting the ones they love. We recognize them, and they're complex and deep - they're not caricatures or flat single-idea set pieces. Like you said about the song, with high and low notes, shifting rhythm and speed. The show does that very well.

Fun fact- The Moon Rises was created using Toon Boom, the same program that the official Gen 4 MLP movie was used in alos, so The Moon Rises IS movie quality lol.

I believe Duo Cartoonist were ex-Disney (were because their channel was terminated), and the singer of the cover of The Moon Rises used for the animation is a professional (maybe small time?) voice actress who is also a brony/pegasister and is widely loved for her contributions to various fan projects.

Some fan works that don't get enough attention but definitely deserves more is Jyc Row's Infinite Eclipse project. It's a series of songs they made about their My little pony alternate universe, and there are some really, really good songs among them! I'd recommend together against the sisters and the final eclipse as being the best ones to listen too!!!

Also if you like hard rock id definitely check out PrinceWhatever, Restoration, Your own sky, Away from me. To name a few from him.
