You’re 100% right. I deal with it every day and I’m in the roofing business climbing ladders. It hurts the worst when I’m sitting still driving down the road in the morning. I have had previous spinal fusion surgery and now I’ve blown out my disk above my fusion.

Im 33 and this video helped me mentally. I have a disc in my lower back that is completely flat "non existent" is what my chiropractor told me and the one above that one is a lot smaller than it's suppose to be too. The pain i have to deal with is so unbearable sometimes. It's very depressing, i have 3 year old and I struggle to have a normal father daughter relationship. I was so active with sports, hiking, running and biking to now struggling to walk. People may think it's nothing but this is very depressing for me. I use to feel mentally and physically strong to feeling like a helpless lil puss. Chiropractor says i'll definitely need back surgery and probably around 50 years old and for me to hold off for as long as possible but I don't think thats a good idea. Im still young i feel like doing it at younger age would be better so i can enjoy my time with my daughter and having some kind of active life i once had. I feel waiting til 50+ years old my body won't heel as fast and look how much i'll miss out on. Anywho i just needed to vent i guess.

I'm very sorry to hear of your situation. You sound so much like my son, Allison, the guy in this video. He was suffering for about 12 years before he had his surgery. I don't suggest you wait if it's at all possible, you can never get this time back. I wish we had known about this surgery sooner, it would have given him more quality time with his daughter, who is now grown. As a mother, I must say I am so glad he had this done, life is good! Allison was 42 turning 43 when he had his back done. Don't wait

So many people struggle physically and emotionally, and not being able to be the father or mother we want to be is pretty brutal. Let us know if you would like a complimentary evaluation. And don't put it off. ADR is not like fusion where you want to put it off to the last possible time. Visit Enande.com if you want to explore this.

Hi there! DO NOT wait. I am a Vocational Rehab Counselor, and I have worked with hundreds of people who have undergone fusion and probably thousands with back injuries. Before ADR, the standard rule about back surgery was to wait until you couldn't tolerate living without the surgery...because sometimes the surgery result was so poor. In the case of fusion, there are known side effects (look about Adjacent Segment Syndrome), and people have been told to wait. BUT NOT WITH ADR. The discs will outlast you, so the longer you wait just means more pain. It also means a longer recovery and more chance of permanent damage. Check into this now and get your life back.

Thank you David. Fusion sometimes is indeed the best option. When ADR is not appropriate, fusion may be a very good solution. Unfortunately, sometimes fusion is recommended simply because the surgeon is not sufficiently versed and experienced when it comes to ADR. We are glad you are having a good outcome, and we trust you will have many years of good health!

Hello. I want to do this as opposed to fusion in my lower back. I'm a nurse and, I injured my back at work about a little over a year ago. I'm where you were. I've pretty much pushed everyone away as I can't do much with friend and, they don't understand. I miss family who live in other states because, I can't do the long distance driving anymore. I'm constantly in pain. Just had more shots in back that don't work and, now I'm just fed up. I had and EMG done last week and, tech mentioned disc replacement as opposed to fusion as his patients with fusions don't do quite as well as patients who have had replacements. So, coming across this video as you can imagine is uplifting. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and, I wish you the best of luck as you continue recovering. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Majodie, glad you were uplifted by this video.. my son's experience is so much like yours..he had degenerative disc disease, which is arthritis, he is doing very well. As I watch him move around, I am in awe when I look back a year ago and saw how he was then..could hardly move..so much pain. This is the best decision he could possibly have made...nothing to be afraid of...do your research...ask questions..best of luck to you

NDAAccount, did you decide to get something done? While 5 discs seems insurmountable, I know Dr. Ritter-Lang at Enande has done multi-level disc replacement along these lines. I do not know if he has ever done 5 in one area of the back or not, but a friend of mine has 3 cervical and 2 lumbar done in the same day! And he is riding motocross now, 6 months after surgery. Sounds crazy, but this is not a unique story. And I know that many times people do not need every level treated with disc replacement. You might want to check into it.

I am now 50 and have been in pain for almost 30 years. All 5 discs in lumber region are shot. Going through the process of getting a nerve block and eventually ablation, pending on my insurance. Getting the run around from different doctors about a permanent fix. I don’t want to continue to have to take pain meds for the rest of my life. When people find out you got back problems, they tend to treat you like you got the plague. Looking for a good doctor for possible disc replacement. Thanks for your story.

When I ask about Disc Replacement they keep telling me I am too old (64) and it is not a good fit. Though I am 64 I am still VERY active, doing things such as complete kitchen remodels, replacing car transmissions, digging ditches to replace sprinkler system, etc. And want to continue to do these things. I'm still waiting on: 1) an eval of the films of my neck I sent in, 2) questions regarding "bent shoe syndrome" to be answered and 3) concerns regarding a barrier being put in place so that when they have to go back in to take out a broken M6, I don't bleed out. Dr. Bertagnoli raised enough concerns that I'm unwilling to spend 500 Euro to get a price on cervical adr. I'm hearing good things about the Balanced Back lumbar disc- much stronger than polyethylene, doesn't wear out like the M6, and is implanted using a much safer posterior approach as opposed to going through the abdomen.

This sounds like what I need to have done. I'm in the UK and have just had MRI which does not show any obvious cause, just some narrowing of the L5 foraminal canal. I have been offered facet joint injections. I had facet joint injections 12 years ago and there was some improvement for about 6 months. The pain I'm getting is unbearable and makes any exertion almost impossible, what a normal person can do in an hour takes me all day and then the next day I can't to do a thing. The doctors suggest exercise, but they don't seem to accept that exertion and movement makes it worse, just like a shovel with a split in the handle. I have self diagnosed that my L4 L5 disc is the real cause and the only way I can manage it is with minimal activity.

Hi there MMABeijing! Most of our patients are in constant pain before surgery. And the symptoms you are talking about are very common among those who undergo disc replacement. The great thing about ADR is it very often enables people to return to things like sports and all the things people did before they were hurt. Where fusion often means giving up lifting and sports, ADR enables these things. If you would like Dr. Ritter-Lang to give you a complimentary consultation, just go to enande.com. he would be happy to review your films and give you an opinion.

@Ahmet Alan about the same. I've done multiple Physiotherapy sessions and decompression therapy but now I just get cortisone shot every 6 months and the pain is still there but it's bearable at this point I have to wait until the disc is all most gone to get surgery.. but good news I heard the disc replacement surgery is coming to Canada so as long as I can wait out for a while I can get it covered. There has been a lot of breakthrough techniques for the back in the last 5 years and the amount of information that is being research currently is promising! I'm hoping I can last a few more years before requiring any more attention? 🤞😁

I'm sorry can you elaborate whether it was a 2 disc replacement that was done. I'm in America and possibly will need surgery in the future for lower lumbar 2 discs(31 yr old), and I was told that disk replacement was not approved by the FDA for 2 discs. I was not happy with that opinion/fact from the DR as I do not want a fusion, it's outdated and barely gives good results. Do you have an input on whether surgery options would be different for me in America or elsewhere? Thank you so much and your story helped me stay positive as I am going trough up and downs with depression about my condition. Take care.

Hi jed23ify. Multi-level disc replacement is common outside the US. We do this in Germany very frequently. 2-3 level lumbar and cervical ADR are done quite a bit. TY so much Debby! :)) Mine is an issue with my left arm going numb off & on & shoulder pain often radiating to my chest these days (a 'new one'), but believe me, I know it could be a lot worse!! When I used the word 'suffered' I meant with chronic pain, so I felt kind of bad for that first line, b/c I realize that that word is relative and pain can be a great deal worse than what I have. Still...I just had my first MRI and wanted to begin researching now, just in case I may need this someday. Hello Billy. For single level ADR with Enande/Dr. Ritter-Lang, it is 28K Euros plus 4K for additional levels. That includes all the hospital stay, hotel stay before and after (including a 5-star hotel during recuperation), and full brunches before and after hospital stay. And that is for you and a companion. We even provide hotel for your companion while you are in the hospital. The only cost to add to this is airfare and evening meals when not in the hospital. We do not rush people out of the hospital either like in many countries. 4-6 days in the hospital is common at Enande...if needed. Hope this helps. You can get more information and a complimentary consultation at www.enande.com/evaluation-form.html

Hi Al, My name is Mari and I am 39 years old. Hearing you in the beginning about the type of person you are reminds me of me. I am a woman of all trades, love to build things, interior painting, web design, exercising, social gatherings, etc and in 2015 I was in a car accident (2 to be exact) and it has ruined my lower back. I've been in therapy for a year and there is no change, it keeps getting worse. My drive to do the things I love has decreased, I can no longer enjoy things with my family and friends, I too am the bread winner and always made money with the so many skills I have. Depending on others now has lowered my self esteem. I'm depressed, been crying and it shows. I have been told by my doctor last week that I require surgery. I have never in my life ever had surgery, never broke a bone. So for me this is such a scary thing for me to do. He advised two options, artifical disk replacement OR Disk Infusion. I also have arthritis which means he may have to go with the disk infusion. I'm scared I'm not sure which he will do. the disk replacement seems less complicated than the disk infusion. I want my life back but I'm scared. How do I cope with preparation of this surgery and the aftermath?

Maritza, what have you decided to do? I have been a vocational rehab counselor for more than 20 years and have worked with hundreds of fusion recipients. While I know there are times when fusion really is the best treatment for a given situation, I know that US and CA surgeons recommend fusion far too often, and most of them could be avoided with disc replacement.

Aaron, when Al decided to have this done, we started planning about 6 months in advance..it was our goal to raise as much as possible. I hosted suppers and silent auctions at my local church. Our local Lions Club hosted a barbecue, one man in our community traveled around to local businesses, who gave donations, as well as family and friends who gave generously. We raised half of what we needed and worked to raise the rest.. set a goal for yourself if you don't have insurance...if we had had more time, I know we would have raise all of it..I was overwhelmed with the generosity of my family, friends and community

It's adding insult to injury for Canadians to have to travel to Europe to get the healthcare they have already paid for in Canada.
