May I ask what your symptoms were and at what level was the herniation? I have a few at L2-L3, L4-L5 and L5-S1 and my biggest issue is the numbness in my right thigh and right toes. Other than that I really don't have pain, but I would like to consider this for the numbness.
@allstonmd Жыл бұрын
@@jesse590 L4/L5 - Symptoms were all the classic sciatic pain areas. Hip pain that radiated to butt cheek and down leg. I described the tingly sensation as the same you get if you sit on the toilet too long, but only down one leg. Hurt horribly to cough or sneeze. Unfortunately, I forgot I was healing and re herniated it. Pain is back, but not where it was. Round two of surgery next Monday morning. All of my pain, then and now has been in my hip area, SI joint area and down my leg. Nothing discomforting in my lower back.

Ended up having two surgeries. Still have sciatic pain in left leg. No where near where it was but not pain free either. My advice, take it easy after surgery. You'll feel great and that's the problem. You forget you're recovering. Best of luck.

I’d been suffering pain for 20+ years and avoiding surgery, I did a year of physical therapy that didn’t work, so decided to go with surgery. my firsts doctor’s opinion was to work on L4 and L5 disks, which L4-S1 was a fusion! but I consulted with another doctor and he suggested to do microdiscectomy on my L5 disk! and it’s almost a year and I’m happy that I did this and can live normally 🎉

I had a discectomy via open surgery last year for a herniated disc and the leg pain reduced almost immediately and then recovery afterwards was good. I did my physio and everything pretty much returned to normal. 3 months ago, the same disc re-herniated and here I am swiftly reminded of the horrendous glute and leg pain, so I had the steroid epidural injection last week and although it won't heal the herniated disc, when ever I do too much and my leg spasms, I feel the anti inflammatory sensation.of the steroid injection kick in on the part of my leg that hurts, it's a welcome relief until I have my 2nd surgery in 3 weeks time. It's so delibitating before surgery.

I had mine done yesterday. I was scheduled for 7:30 am at the hospital. I was told to arrive two hours early (@ 5:30 am). I was on a bed waiting the entire time thinking about my kids and possibly something going wrong (my wife made me watch "The Resident" on Netflix with her 😂😂😂). I got a iv put into my arm by the nurse and rolled into surgery at 8:00 am. I was put to sleep at I'm assuming 8:10 am, had the Laminectomy Microdisectomy and woke up at 11:00 am. I had to wait an hour in recovery due to the anesthesia and nasaue and got back home around 1:00 pm. I dont feel any pain in my left leg anymore but my lower back, left butcheek and throat are really sore. I was dehydrated because I had to fast 8 hours prior to surgery, had a nasty headache, and currently very hot. They told me a slight fever was possible. Do not lay on your stomach, only your back and side when sleeping. I know it doesn't make sense but laying on my back is the most comfortable or on my right side which is the oppisite side of my disk herniation. But it is Day 1 after surgery..hopefully this long descriptive post helped someone.

Im 2 weeks home drom having discs removed and being dused from L4-S1. I think the surgeon forfot the gently part when moving the muscles outof the way. 2 years ago i had a botches surgery where they just ground the disc down. I was in worse pain after and quickly but steadily got worse. Now, it feels like theres actually room in my spine for the nerves but theres still radiating pain in my leg and foot. It seems like ill be in about 30% less pain once everything heals. The bottom of my left leg and foot felt like they were on fire before i had this surgery. Anyone considering this: research research and do more research before having it done. Pick a large hospital in a large city.

A microdiscectomy is a removal of the herniated part of the disc. A discectomy is a removal of the ENTIRE disc. At that point you all need to have an artificial disc or spinal fusion to account for the vacant space in between the vertebrae.

You remove the disc bulge. Then why it's not effective in back pain
@davidp8854 Жыл бұрын
A herniated disc may not be painful in the disc or back area. At least not at the start of the disc bulge. This is the case when the disc is weakened over time and the outer ring of the disc is weakened or torn. Poor posture combined with loaded twisting can cause a lumbar disc bulge and eventually a tear. An injury like weightlifting or falling or other trauma can cause extreme back pain in the area of the disc. In either case the bulging disc puts pressure on the nerves that go through your glutes and down your leg. This is called referred pain. In an advanced or large disc herniation you will begin to feel pain in the disc itself as the pressure increases. Also the material inside the disc is neurotoxic and causes the nerve to become inflamed worsening the pain in the buttock and down the back of the leg and in the disc area itself. Ie. Sciatica The microdiscectomy will remove the disc material that has made its way outside the disc ring. And the bulging portion that has not escaped the tear in the outer ring is also removed. And that will really help all the pain and inflammation including the pain near the disc.
