Coach Viva really needs to get “viva” and “updated” on the 3-part compartment science (long known) that weight loss is not about calorie restriction meaning calories in vs calories out. That simply leaves out the hormonal component of the equation and implies that 500 calories of ice cream are the same as 500 calories from broccoli!! Eating all the time the wrong choices of foods (ultra-processed, etc) leads to the overweight and obese pandemic we are living right now. Time to wake up!

This morning my dog (Elvis) told me that if I want to continuue to pet him, I will now have to pay monthly. $9.95, but only $99.00 annually. The greed of these companies with their subscriptions is not to be believed. Will they also want a tip, when I set up my Lumen subscription?

Instead of Lumen and all these hardware/software 'fixes', I want someone to create *authentic* non-western meals and recipes in the apps themselves. I'm so tired of the bland meal suggestions...

I actually have one of these, and I find it super helpful. However, you're right, it's mainly due to mindfulness and something tangible to keep me motivated. I'm a data analyst and love to see all the data points that I can get, and it's neat to see how the numbers really are affected by the number of carbs I eat. I find a low carb (not keto) diet works best for me regardless of the science or lack thereof behind it. I'm sure a lot of people will roll their eyes or not understand that, but if it works, it works.
@CoachViva2 жыл бұрын
Glad it's working for you, Lucy! It doesn't really matter if what it's advertised to work because is different than why it actually works as long as it works for you!

This is me too. Keto is too extreme and results in me feeling discouraged, annoyed, and just unhappy. It also is a diet that promotes heart disease and other issues when used long term. Low refined carbs with some fibrous carbs like beans added in is going great for me.

Thanks for this. I am sick of all the misinformation abt strategies for the body to primarily burn fat. Ranging for diets, to advising to primarily only doing slow aerobic exercise and keeping anaerobic short, to now a product like lumen. People keep falling in the same mistake of taking correlation as causation.

Not sure if I agree with the comment about intake vs expenditure. That is old skool tech from the 80's. 2000 cal of candy does not equal 2000 cal of nuts. From my understanding of the CURRENT research....sugars tend to be stored in visceral fat more. Am I incorrect? Looking forward to your explanation to clear this difficult topic up. thank you
@CoachViva2 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas, sure let me clarify this. There's a difference between caloric intake vs food quality. In terms of purely calories (i.e., energy balance,) 2000 calories in nuts = 2000 calories in candy. - This means if your body burns 1500 calories a day and you eat 2000 calories of nuts or candy or something else, the excess 500 will be stored as fat and you'll gain weight. Now in terms if food quality, nuts is much different than candy and it can affect how much calories your body burns. - Nuts have healthy fats and fiber that slow down digestion (no insulin spikes) and it also takes more calories by your body to digest nuts (they have higher TEF factor). - Candy takes very little energy to digest (low TEF) and can spike insulin, which may cause your body to be insulin resistant --> your cells are more resistant to using that sugar for energy --> your caloric expenditure is lower b/c the calories from the candy isn't being used --> they get stored as fat instead. So it's calories-in, calories-out BUT depending on food quality, the calories-out part of the equation may change. Does that make sense? Note: In practice, choosing 1-2 pieces of candy vs a few nuts won't make a big difference, so often it's not worth getting stuck on the minutiae of food quality unless you're eating a lot of candy. But if you habitually eat handfuls of candies at a time in isolation without other nutrients to slow down digestion, then that would lead to problems. Hope this helps clarify things!

A couple of years ago I lost 80 lbs on a keto diet, but have found that the same techniques are not as effective the second time around. My strategy this time is to shake things up with intermittent fasting and cycling in and out of ketosis. I am hoping the Lumen device will be a game changer in that I can actually measure whether or not I am in ketosis, and adjust accordingly.

This is very helpful. Thank you! I was looking into it because I thought it would measure my metabolism. I don't have a thyroid and it's been harder to lose weight. I started strength training 3x a week about 7 weeks ago and I've lost maybe 3 pounds. I know diet is a big part of it and I just started working on that part. I just wanted to know if you have any videos specifically for people who've had thyroid cancer and tips for us.
@CoachViva3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel, thanks for watching and commenting! I don't have any videos addressing thyroid, but if I were to look at scientific principles, things won't be much different than for people with thyroid. Diet would still be key and changing your expected rate to be slower would be the main things on the tactical side. Then it's all about conducting weekly experiments to see how your body reacts to 1 change, adjust based on scientific principles, and iterate until you are seeing desired results. Hope this helps!

I like the concept of the Lumen since I am tired of pricking my fingers to determine Ketones/Glucose levels. Testing your CO2 output with a personal handheld device would be awesome. However, I am not sure measuring CO2 alone is good enough for weight loss (the point of Coach Viva's video) since your diet effects your weight more than exercise does (remember: you cannot out train a bad diet). I also must say I was disappointed this reviewer did not apparently even have the product to test it, so all her opinions are just that... not facts based on her actual experience with the product. :-/
@CoachViva3 жыл бұрын
Hi Hutch, thanks for watching and commenting! Totally agree on exercise not making up for poor nutrition. The review is about the scientific premise claimed by Lumen, which doesn't change whether we use it or not. We recommend supplementing our reviews with anecdotal reviews from others - there are always plenty of those around, while our goal is to add to the conversation the objective science/coaching point-of-view which we have seen be more sparse. Hopefully that clarifies the context of these review videos!

Yeah, the device was very explicitly advertised to those two sensors it had a handle on. What I don't hear that I want to is some aspirational scientists who have a sparkle in their eyes talking about the awesome metabolic health practice was much better possible with this device. Without that, what am I to care about this additional little energy and money needing device's information that I can't get from "EAT SOMETHING NICE AT REGULAR INTERVALS" which my body is tells me.

DON’T BUT THIS PRODUCT - Warning their return policy is not existent if you have even opened the box. If you’re not happy with the readings, too bad. If you have a medical condition (like myself) and cannot get enough breath to complete a reading, too bad. They wont take it back. Again, If you have even opened the box but never used it they wont take it back, No refunds. My readings (when I could even complete a full breath 1 time out of every 6th try) were all over the place. Not accurate and their “studies” are done in house with plenty of bias.

Relying on lumen is not sustainable and keeps people focused on the wrong things . The focus should be CICO but you are right if lumen encourages them to achieve CICO. And then they realized after that that they to do IFasting to keep progressing , then once the methods help them in disguise to achieve CICO I guess it is worth a try. For me it was the opposite. I spinned wheels for 15 years diet after diet and realized after that the one thing that worked was CICO so I just monitor my cals , eat whatever I want and I am good.
@CoachViva3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience, Priscilla. As long as people know what's ultimately helping and therefore don't spin into misattributed credit logic, it's fine. But this may be hard to do in practice perhaps.
