Thanks so much for these videos on the G100! I recently bought it as my first ever mirrorless camera--I'm super excited about all the things it can do but clearly I am the limiting factor. So it's great to be able to see how someone with far greater skills and experience makes use of the G100.

Hey, Marlene! Just watched this video and your others on the G100. Not for the first time, but several times each as I pondered getting the G100. I must say that your videos hold up very well after several viewings! There's a lot of content presented in a very accessible manner. You convinced me to buy one in spite of many negative G100 reviews by those who just don't get this camera. I think Panasonic made a huge blunder with this camera. They should have presented it as an accessible multipurpose, easy to use camera that the VLOGGERs could "discover"! Coming from the G9, I see the potential to take the G100s "weaknesses" and turn them to strengths. For example, the G100s 4K video crop when using the electronic stabilization opens the possibility of extending the reach of a telephoto lens like the 14-140mm to over 500mm while recording video and 4k photos at 140mm. Having a very light, stabilized camera/lens combo opens possibilities for nature photography that would require a way more expensive, heavier kit. So many possibilities! So little time!

I was overjoyed when Lumix came out with a new small full featured m43 camera. Yes, I feel they really flubbed the marketing on this one too. It seems that a year + after it's release more people are 'discovering' this little gem of a camera. I've seen a lot of recent videos popping up by 'famous' youtubers. If you watch my recent video about photo walks you'll learn that I'm using my G100s to shoot the video and take the photos kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5K0hHWkqtKFpas I'm happy to hear you discovered the G100 too, Jason. Dear Marlene, Thanks for your content, always very useful and well-structured. I speak little English but I follow you willingly. To be honest, I have always discarded the G100 because the worst thing about Panasonic is its marketing. (even in Italy it is truly terrible). Now I have purchased a G100D to accompany my G90. I wanted a really small camera to always carry with me with the fantastic 12-32 or the wonderful Panaleica 25. I essentially take photos, and that is why I have never considered the small Lumix, presented as a Vlogger camera. Instead I was surprised. It is truly a miniature G90. It perfectly embodies the spirit of the M43 and with the right lenses (14 - 15 - 20 - 25 - 12/32) it is truly a jewel. Once the buttons are configured it is perfect, pleasant and fun. The D version with its OLED viewfinder and USB C port made it perfect. Have a good day.

Thanks Marlene, enjoyed the review. We have a G9, which truthfully is ‘more camera’ than we need and need to spend more time learning all of its capabilities, but too large for us to take hiking. We often use a Sony Rx100 M7 instead, but this camera looks like an interesting option, especially with the ability to change lens (at f 2.8 the Sony a little too slow a times, but otherwise we love it). We also have the 15, 1.7 and it rarely leaves the g9.

Hello Hiker. Yes it's really nice to have a compact camera especially for long hikes. The G100 is very comparable in feature set, size, focal length and price to the Lumix LX100M2. I also think the Lumix ZS100 is a great travel and everyday camera (for much less cost) with more reach at 10x zoom. I just prefer the M43 with interchangeable lenses and manual zooming. In any case, I'm really happy that with all the Full Frame madness, Panasonic hasn't completely abandoned the super small M43 cameras! That was the prime reason I switched from my full frame Canon gear in the first place. Thanks for stopping by to chat.

@ImageMaven2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael. Not sure I'll do a video on the differences, but I'll give you a quick overview. These two cameras are quite distinct in terms of the capabilities, especially for things like birding with long lenses. The G100 doesn't have the focus options or the burst modes that the G9 does. But for walking around town, you'd want the G100 for its size and convenience. I really love the simple S&Q mode on the G100. You can definitely shoot variable frame rate video on the G9 but it's takes a bit longer to set it all up. I love the easy vertical and vlogging options of the G100, and the fact that it has a mic jack (so does the G9). If you want to push into higher end photo or video subjects with longer, heavier lenses, then the G9 will be good for that. You may also consider the GH6 if you're into video more than still photography. I'm waiting for the G9 successor. Might have to give up on that as I'm not sure Panasonic will be making too many more photo-centric cameras, so I might get the GH6 next year. But the G9 has really come down in price this year, so it may be a good time to pick one up. Most of the other menus are the same/similar in both cameras - and most Lumix cameras - so once you understand those it's easy to use them in other cameras. That's what I've always loved about Lumix cameras, the simple and intuitive menus. Hope that helps a bit. Cheers!

I am coming from a ZS200, and some users recommend modifying those values for best results in that camera. I enjoyed you online training a while back, and still enjoy your KZbin videos. Hi Henry, Great to hear from you again! I hope you like this little gem of a camera as much as I do. I typically use Standard Photo Style for every day things. @ImageMaven3 жыл бұрын
I’ve never used a GH5 and I use this camera mostly for 1080p clips. The clarity is great. But that’s dependant on your lenses and using proper exposure.

Hi!) Thanks for your video. Was there any updates for g100 to improve autofocus or any functions? Generally, I want to buy it but I don't know is AF bad or no))
@ImageMaven4 жыл бұрын
In my experience the AF is fine but you didn't say what focus mode you're interested in. There are several combinations you can set up. I did a test using focus tracking of a moving subject the other day and I was very pleased with how well it stuck to the subject. If you want to learn the details of the firmware updates of any Lumix camera or lens, you can check out this page on the Panasonic website: av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/download/index.html Hope that helps. And thank you for watching.

@@ImageMaven thanks for your answer. One more question, please)) gx9 or g100? Gx9 has OIS but g100 is more recent... I want small camera for street photo and maybe video.
@ImageMaven4 жыл бұрын
@@rkrotov I have not used the Gx9, but I almost bought it. The G100 is just a bit smaller than the Gx9, though they have very similar features and price. I have a new Lumix G100 video coming out early next week. If video or Vlogging is not your main thing, then definitely go for the Gx9.

Hi Marlene! I miss your regular content :-( I wish you could do some more on G9 video making. I'm just terrible at it and could use more help. I'll bet I'm not alone. Thanks! Jack

Hi Jack, Great to hear from you. Do you have any specific problems with G9 video making? I'm no expert and I don't do it for clients. I just plod along making my own KZbin videos and capture a few clips of my friends skateboarding. I take it you've watched my previous videos on the topic? If not, let me know and I'll post the links. Thanks for checking in, and I hope all is well with you.

@@ImageMaven Yes Hi! I'm pretty good with stills but video for me is in the realm of the "black arts." I have problems such as maintaining focus while in video... maintaining proper exposure... and more. Your videos are so inspirational... inspirational for us to do better with our remarkable G9's.
@ImageMaven4 жыл бұрын
@@jackjstrange Yes, I agree that focus is tricky no matter what camera you use. What subject matter are you shooting in video mode? And typically what type of lenses do you use? Wide, normal, telephoto? I use mostly wide angle lenses in good light and that seems to work pretty good. Even if I hand of my camera to someone else to grab a clip of me, it can usually find me. Anyhow, I'll do some research and try to put a tutorial together soon-ish. Thanks for the questions. It helps me a lot!

@@ImageMaven Hi Marlene, There are probably many of us who are still passionate about their G9’s and would love to hear from you again. I was videoing a Japanese tea tree planting ceremony with a monk doing a ritual chant. I was set up for 4K60P 8bit. The lens was the 12-60 Leica. My shutter speed was set for 1/60 and I had a 3 stop ND filter on since it was a sunny day. When the chanting began I used the red video button and recording began. Focus was AF with face detect. So... the foreground subjects were very underexposed and the background was properly exposed. Then a couple of times during the 5 minute chant the AF system completely lost focus before crawling back. I didn’t want to start fooling around with correcting things since I was concerned that I would lose portions of the chant. Very frustrating and I’m sure entirely due to my inexperience. Nice to hear from you again! Jack

Hi, I know absolutely nothing about photography lol and I’ve just got LUMIX G100 today (12th May 2021) I’m just watching your videos now, wow looks like I made a good decision lol Any help would be much appreciated lol
@ImageMaven3 жыл бұрын
All Lumix cameras have similar features and menus. So if you watch my other Lumix (G9 mostly) Videos, and my basic photography videos, you should learn a lot. If all else fails, put your G100 on AI mode and take yourself out for a photo walk while you're getting used to the camera. Have fun!
@OutRAjiousАй бұрын
stabilization not so relevant for people pics as you’re not going to use a slow speed , right? Ideally 1/200 right?
@ImageMavenАй бұрын
Depends on the light and focal length too. 1/200s is fairly high for stationary portraits. I use 1/1000s or faster for skaters and other action shots.

Wow, Marlene, you are a great salesperson! Made me really look at this as a viable camera to recommend to friends. You also perked my interest in the 15mm Leica lens for myself. So how’s the AF for video on the G100? KZbinrs love to complain about Panasonic’s video AF so I wondered if they are really trying to evolve this in their newer cameras. I look forward to your next video. They are always helpful gems.
@ImageMaven4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that lens is sweet. I haven't used many fixed lenses in the past 10 years, but I've grown to love this 15mm. I had to get used to the focal length. Not as wide as I'm used to shooting skateboarding, with my 7-14, but a bit too wide for my KZbin "in-studio" videos. However it forces me to think a bit and be creative with the tools at hand. As far as this camera, it's definitely comparable to the Lumix LX100M2 in price and features, except no flippy screen (which I love as a protector) and no fancy microphones. If your friends are looking for a good compact camera there are other power zooms in the Lumix lineup that cost less, especially if they're not into blogging. Always great to hear from you Steven! FYI I'm planning on taking an extended break from KZbin for awhile. Just need a break from the pressure for a bit. Plus, summer is short where I live, and I have people I want to spend time with while we can still do that outdoors. But don't worry I'll come back when I have something important or interesting to share. Thanks for your loyal interest. It's always a great pleasure to hear from you!

Oh yes, the AF.... Well in my humble opinion, it takes some work. There are a ton of focus options, and it takes time and practice to learn what works for any given situation. I did shoot a lot of video with this camera and even some close up slow motion. By the way, you can shoot slow motion in MF which is handy. I did a bunch of those close up flowers and bee clips to really push the AF. It was breezy and I was fairly wide open so very shallow DOF. In general people like to complain and give negative reviews, and if you go into a camera system with those complaints on your mind, guess what? You're always going to have those biases. So I find that aspect frustrating with camera reviewers. I'm not a camera reviewer. As you know, I'm a Lumix user who digs deeps and spends the time figuring out the tools I have at hand. If they don't work at first, I try something else. I don't blame the camera, I put the onus on myself to figure things out. I always tell people when ever possible to test out the cameras in a shop before buying. All the big manufacturers have demo days. Take a memory card along. Take some photos and clips and look at them when you get home. Anyhow, just my two cents. Did not intend to blast you, Steven. Hopefully others will read this comment too. Cheers!

@@ImageMaven Thanks for your comments. I am an older guy who remembers walking to school in the snow, barefoot ;), not having a smartphone for most of my life and learning to love computer technology in my mid+ years. I think many of us are too spoiled with the current technology. It is SO great but, yes, never perfect. I just revel in the fact I can take photos, slip the SD card into something my computer can interpret and have tremendous fun editing them in the plethora of photo editing apps. I consider my G9 a technological marvel, even with somewhat inferior video AF. Who cares? And technology will soar ahead. As we get older and need to advance our cameras I will be listening to your very knowledgable input.

Haha. We’re not so different Steven. I walked to school in the snow too, but I did have boots 😉. Learned how to use a computer at age 30, which was a long time ago. And I’m on my first smart phone. I’m working hard to keep up with the kids and sharing my findings along the way. Thanks for being with me on the journey.

It’s a sweet little camera. The G100 is almost too big by comparison. But it has that lovely flippy screen and mic jack which are both very handy. Could do without the flash though. Yes try and get a GM5 or a GM1. I have an orange GM1. They also made a nice royal blue one.

What settings and lens did you used for this video? Just bought one and as a beginner I'm just trying to get a crisp clear image like these, but no success at all, using stock lenses

Not sure I remember! This video is a couple years old. What settings are you struggling with? Focus? Exposure? Are you shooting indoors or outside? Video settings or photo settings?
