RAW video exists and is pretty common in cine cameras. The BlackMagic pocket cameras can shoot in RAW, and now the S1H will also be able to do ProRes RAW...an efficient compression method for RAW footage.

@Albanez395 жыл бұрын
@@ImageMaven Video is basically a sequence of still photographs, and the same rules apply to both audio and video when it comes to either a film camera or a digital camera. RAW files are today what photographic film used to be until a few decades ago. A format that needs to be processed, edited, and transformed into a printable or uploadable format :P Sensors create images and videos the same way, it's the software image processor that works on them differently. Videos must be processed, encoded and packaged into a format that conserves most of the quality while shrinking the file size as much as possible. Having 100% uncompressed RAW video is extremely inconvenient, slow and storage-consuming. Even if it's possible, most cameras create RAW footage by using lossless compression, or even high quality lossy compression. The same happens with images...they must be processed and packaged into the RAW file format our camera uses. The important thing is keeping all the settings accessible for precision editing on a more powerful machine (a computer). There are also different codecs or methods to produce RAW footage; One of the most simple methods is DNG files. The camera captures 24 stills every second, and doesn't even bother creating a video file. On the memory card, you end up with 24 RAW photos for every second of footage...needless to say, this is inconvenient and results in immense file sizes. Hasselblad medium format cameras use this method, and their message is clear: This is a stills camera, if you want video, you have to compile it yourself. Different brands have created their own method for RAW video. I don't know myself the science behind it and how they compile every frame through the Bayer filter, but Blackmagic has its own system and allows for different levels of compressed RAW footage (to save storage space). Sony, Arri, RED and most other manufacturers do the same with their own RAW processes. Last year, Apple was able to create ProRes RAW, a new and very efficient method to compress and encode RAW footage, while keeping the file sizes small and easy to decode (even mediocre computers can edit without lagging); The biggest blockbusters don't use 100% RAW footage, they shoot in compressed RAW and it's still 999x better than the MP4 and MOV files coming out of our small mirrorless cameras. Truth is, JPEG and H.264 are incredibly outdated and inefficient codecs...and that could be solved easily: by just adopting HEIC and HEVC, which are far newer and more advanced codec standards. But that is up to camera manufacturers unfortunately, and most of them are continuing with the old codecs because of consumer ignorance. We want more megapixels, higher resolution, bigger sensors and so on....not realizing that such values are not indicative of higher image quality...not as much as pixel density, pixel quality, bit depth, compression and encoding methods and so on...

I learned about the importance of white balance when photographing my Christmas village. The snow looked yellow. I found a better setting that made it white. Think I had it on sunny from my usual outdoor use. Great video

Yes, indoor lighting tends to be on the warm side. So a daylight setting will add to that. I expect that Tungsten might work better, or AWB. AWB actually works pretty good, especially in mixed lighting situations. Thanks for watching!

Thanks Marlene. This is an important topic. I once lost a job over bad white balance. It can be tough to fix in post, though Final Cut Pro does a good job. I learned the hard way. Best solution is good WB from the beginning. AWB does not always do the job. Custom WB w/white card is the best. Good of you to cover this topic so comprehensively. Happy New Year!

Thanks Marlene for showing that AWB is actually acceptable. For Raw photography you don’t need to worry about it, but for video and jpeg you do. But my question is: isn’t there a time you need to consider and if so how long is it? I got the feeling that AWB needs to slowly adopt to your environment. So if you shoot too quickly you are going to get a bad adaption of the light in your shot, right? I got a G9 and a LX100 and I wish the LX had a slider for AWB/Indoor/Outdoor/My setting, so I could use it more efficiently. Well I suppose I’d like the ISO to be there on a knob too.
@ImageMaven3 жыл бұрын
Hi Claes, AWB does not need extra time to calculate. And remember it's not a brightness/light thing, it's a colour thing. That's for every camera, not just your Lumix. If you have a cell phone, put it into video mode, but don't shoot. Just move it around to different colours in a room. Try moving from warm to cool colours and see how that changes the colour of your scene. Do this with your Lumix camera too. It should work in photo and video mode - even if you're not actually taking photos. But if you take photos the effect will be instant. Hope that helps.

There are so many variations of Florescent now (CFL included), and also LED that you can just set the camera on the colour temperature of any given bulb. Most CFL and LED bulbs are stamped with the colour temp. Not that they are 100% accurate but better than nothing. I'd put my money on AWB if I didn't know. Hi, very nice video! I own a G80 and I am filming stage shows like ballet and other stuff. I would like to make a step forward. and I am thinking about the G9. Is this camera much better in both, video and photo, compared to the G80? And also, is with the G9 possible to modify/adjust the Kelvin color temperature while filming? With the G80 I can do it only when the camera is in standby/pause, but not possible during the shooting :( Thanks in advance and look forward to new interesting stuff :)
@ImageMaven2 жыл бұрын
Hi Raffaele, Well this is a first! I didn't think it would be possible, but YES, you can change the Kelvin Colour Temp while filming with the G9. I just did some tests. As far as a better video camera, you might want to look into the Lumix GH6, which has just been released. It's great for photos too. The G9 is priced to sell right now though, as it's already 5 years old. So if you're on a budget you could definitely use that, and it will be a step up from the G80. Hope that helps and thank for your interesting question.
@raffaeleveneri21392 жыл бұрын
@@ImageMaven Hi Marlene, thanks a lot for the info! I am glad to know this feature is there :) About the GH6, yes, that would be probably the best upgrade, especially for video. But I am not sure I can afford it right now, so.... the G9 would be much better in price. Or eventually a GH5II!? I found one of it here in Italy, in a store...they sell it for 1.790€ and it is their test camera for customers (they say just 30 photos made!). Maybe the best deal right now? Thanks again for your reply! Wishing you and all the best.
@ImageMaven2 жыл бұрын
Maybe the store will lend or rent you the GH5II so you can try it out before dropping your hard-earned money on it. Because it's a lot of money, even at that price. And you want to be sure of it. It's also a bit of a learning curve going from a hybrid camera like the G80 or G9 to a more video oriented camera. As I'm a photographer mostly, I tend to stick to the photo-type cameras that can shoot video too. For my KZbin videos the G9 and G100 are good enough. But if your end goal is to become a professional videographer, then you definitely want to educate yourself on the best gear for that. But I say, try out that GH5 first and that might help you decide. All the best with your research!

Hi Marlene. I just bought a GX9. It's a nice enough camera, but Auto White Balance is terrible on it. I have a GX80 that I could put on AWB and it would get the right result around 90% of the time. ( indoors and out). I could generally trust the camera and only have to correct it on occasion. The GX9 AWB however has a very warm look. AWBc isn't much better either, even outdoors on a bright day. It's annoying that they've messed up on something that worked so well. I know I only have to change WB / Kelvin temperature settings but it's an annoyance after only rarely needing to with the GX80. I know the GX9 is a step up in many respects from the GX80, but I'm really irritated by this issue. I feel that AWB is an absolute joke on the GX9.. It's the worst AWB on any camera I've owned, from compacts to my Full frame Canon. I'm wondering about contacting Panasonic. I've pondered on returning it. But I know the camera is good in many other respects..

Off topic question: Will the G9 continuous autofocus while connected to an external HDMI device without having to be recording internally ? Although the G85 does clean HDMI output it will not do continuous autofocus unless it is also recording to internal memory. The GH5 will do continuous autofocus without having to be recording to internal storage, which is good for connecting it to external HDMI device for capture/recording/streaming. My question is: Does the G9 behave like the G85 (no continuous autofocus unless recording internal) or does it behave like the GH5 ( continuous autofocus for external HDMI capture ) ?

I think that white balance and exposure are very personal things and cameras in last years do somewhat good job in guessing good and pleasant result. For me correct white balance is somewhat problematic. It takes away all the atmosphere of the place and it makes photos somewhat boring and not even natural. In my opinion photos taken in incandescent light or some room with warm colors can and should be somewhat warm. Not completely white and not completely yellow or orange. Of coarse it depends on a subject and portraits are different topic.
