The real answers for me is muscle memory. Yes, focus peeking is a must, but you need to know your lens, meaning how much rotation of my focus ring will throw the focused area to what depth in the frame. I mainly shoot with a f1.4 vintage lens with a speedbooster, to tackle the low light weekness of the GH5 and even though the focused area is really thin, I nail my focus most of the time. Only severe con of manual focus for me is when I give someone the cam to do a vid or pic of my self. 9 out of 10 times they can't handle getting the focus right. This is where I can only dream of owning a sony.

Totally agree, thanks for the well thought out post. I shot on the Canon 1DX Mark III last week and the auto focus BLEW my mind.... I have to shoot at 2.0 in low light for the GH5 also and it is hard. Practice, practice like you said. Cheers!

@@ryanjharris Yeah, for sure! I always wonder though why you still stick to the GH5. I mean you are really professional and should be able to upgrade to a 7siii. Why don't you do it? Not to say better/more expesive gear makes the result better, but didn't you came to a point yet where you thought you needed the insane low light and auto focus? Cheers!

I also mapped Black and White to a button it makes the monitor black and white while still recording in color. This makes the focus peaking pop even more and makes the image be all about the composition and focus.

Genius! I am going to try that

Using a Canon 80d i use auto focus to set my focus by tapping the screen on my focus point and then tap manual focus to leave it locked in. I've seen some do the same on the GH5. Great vid. Thanks

Thanks for the upload brosky. Good to know even the pros don't worry about having every single second in perfect focus, just the important parts. Makes me feel like less of a scrub when I can't keep up with fast moving targets haha

As long as the subject is moving in to the focal plane in the middle of the clip - your mind doesn't notice it drift out. Its only jittery AF loss that is noticed.

Are you adjusting the focus as you pan to the right for the landing since I assume the distance is changing?

Nope Im not! Just pre-focusing and leaving it

I know this is older video and having just recently purchased a GH5 from Ebay I struggle with moving off auto to manual... I understand setting up the focus on a point that the skier will come through does the GH5 maintain the focus throughout the jump? Ryan(or anyone else) you set the focus on the flag and then follow the skier 20-25 feet after is the focus maintained on the skier the entire time?
@alantuttphotography3 жыл бұрын
The manual focus assist -- is that a function where the camera will fine-tune the focus you set manually? My DVX200 has something like this, and it comes in handy in situations like this.

Nice shots bro...some of your shots looks like you are skiing at the same time you are shooting. Are you skiing with your GH5 while shooting in any of your shots?

Ryan do I see a filter on your lens? If so what is it. I'm not real pleased with my outdoor cloudy day footage. Been thinking about filters, if they'll help

@@ryanjharris Can't wait! I'm doing product commercials and I'm just looking for the best possible image quality settings in low light, like shooting raw video with no noise... A7III does this job soooo good, but how to achieve this with a micro four third GH5. Can't wait for your video! 💯🙌
